It won't let me say this in the price, but cost...
It won't let me say this in the price, but cost will be different for each person. With that being said, my cost was $1800. I've known others who it was $3000. It's worth every penny in my opinion.
I liked my shaved head look, but it had become quite a hassle every morning to maintain. I have sensitive skin on my head and I had to be careful while shaving with a razor or I'd get razor burn and it would look terrible. I had the shaving process down pretty good to avoid this, but it took me 20-30 minutes every morning. But not shaving my head made me look 10 years older, so I did it, every morning.
When I heard about SMP I just visualized being able to buzz my head in 2 minutes every morning and heading out the door. I had to think long about it because I did pull off a shaved head look rather well, but in the end I chose to go with SMP and I'm glad I did.
My journey was pretty rough though, the first SMP artist I went to did a terrible job. In the end I found an amazing artist that was able to salvage the damage and leave me with a very realistic buzzed head look. That artist that fixed the first botched job was Chris Lopez at Hairline Ink in New York City. He is truly a miracle worker.
Anyone considering this procedure, listen to me because I'm going to save you a lot of headache, time and money by telling you how to avoid falling into the trap of getting a bad SMP procedure.
I thought I had done my homework, I found a website that had a network of "skilled" SMP artists all around America. I ended up choosing an artist who had years of experience with permanent make up. Permanent makeup artists tattoo mostly women and they do things like tattoo eye brows. I thought with this background this individual would be skilled on top of all his time doing SMP. But SMP tattooing is totally different than a normal tattoo or permanent makeup. I found out this individual that did the initial bad SMP job had likely misled me on his skills and I was left with a terrible looking scalp, and I did not return to him for the 2nd sitting thankfully. I didn't just pick the closest SMP artist either, I drove 13 hours round trip to go to him for what turned out to be a great marketing campaign with no delivery and bad results.
I underwent 3 laser tattoo removal procedures that cost me an additional nearly $2k. And it did get most of the ink out but if I wanted to totally reverse the damage, I would have needed 3 to 4 more laser removal procedures. But I had seen how good SMP could look when done right and I was still interested in getting it done.
So I did an internet search for, "Best SMP artist in America", and Chris Lopez from Hairline Ink in New York City came up.
The difference was Chris Lopez had video testimonials from his clients show casing his talent. Unlike the first SMP artist I went to who only had still images of his "work", that in hindsight I wondered if he just pulled the photos off the internet and if they were really stuff he did or not. But with Chris Lopez from Hairline Ink, the clients were sitting there, showing their great results and stating who in fact did the work. You can't fake that. Chris Lopez is the real deal.
He salvaged the botched SMP procedure. And it looks great.
I'm going to tell you the ugly thing about SMP artists. They will all tell you they're good, even if they know they aren't. They want to practice on you and get your money. If you fall for that trap, you're going to regret it. But if you find a good SMP artist, you will be thrilled with the results.
You're probably going to have to travel to find a good SMP artist. Do what I did, make a vacation out of it. Get some friends to go with you, split hotel costs, and see New York City. That city was bananas, I had a great time and I want to go back to visit again. It was a trip I'll always remember, and my friends and I had a great time.
Now as far as the initial results, I wanted a soft hairline. At first it looked pretty sharp right after the procedure but just like Chris Lopez assured me, after the ink had time to settle I was left with a great looking soft hairline.
So please listen to me, don't fall for the great marketing campaign, don't go-to an artist just because they're listed in a network of "talented" SMP artists or only because they're conveniently close by. While some artists in this "network" may be good, it doesn't guarantee they are. Search for an artist with video testimonials, someone who you have seen their name come up and is recommended by someone who went to them. Be willing to travel if you have to, you and the rest of the people around you will be seeing the SMP results every day. I am very happy with Chris Lopez's work, if you GoTo him, I can assure you, you will not fall victim like I did to a bad SMP procedure. It seems there are more bad SMP artists than good ones.
If you are thinking of getting Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) done, consider Chris Lopez from Hairline Ink in New York City. Hairline Ink has other very talented and reputable artists as well, but the work I had done was from Chris Lopez and so that's who I give credit to for saving me from my bad SMP procedure.
I got my mornings back. No more tedious shaving every day. 2 minutes with an electric shaver and I'm done. I look younger, no more razor burn from shaving with a razor. I highly recommend getting SMP done if you pick a talented SMP artist.
I hope this review saves someone else from falling victim to a bad SMP artist and guides you to a great artist so you avoid the hassle and headache I went through. As I'm writing this, it's been a little over a month since my procedure was done at Hairline Ink and I do not regret it. Thank you Chris Lopez!
