I'm thirty-four years old, I've been overweight or obese for most of my life, and ever since I was a little girl I wanted to be "pretty". As I grew up, I learned how to use makeup and my best angles for photos, but I still never felt like the real me.
Then 3 years ago, playing with my 2-year old son, I realized he could run faster than me. I was mortified. I also began to ask myself how I could teach my son how to enjoy being physically active and have a healthy relationship with food when I couldn't do either of those things myself.
To make a very long story short, I lost close to a hundred pounds, became a personal trainer and a competitive weight lifter. I started to feel slightly more comfortable in my skin, but the discrepancy between my improving body and my aging face became more and more of an issue for me. After all, no amount of running or lifting was going to make my nose less bulbous or improve my receding chin.
I decided that just as with my body, I would do something to feel better about my face, and began to spend hours and days and months (as you may be doing right now!) looking for someone who could make me pretty - while also maintaining a face that would be recognizable to my son! I didn't want a Barbie nose and hulk chin attached to my face. I wanted ME. I wanted a better version of my very best selfie - you know, the kind where your makeup is perfect and your face is angled just right, and everyone comments how nice you look? I wanted to look like that every day, from every angle.
When I saw Dr. Weintraub's work, I knew he was the one. People came away from surgery with him looking like their best possible selves. There was nary a Barbie nose in sight. Frankly, if you're looking for that "Hollywood" plastic overly skinny nose, he is NOT your man. If you want a balanced and lovely face that looks like someone carefully molded what you had into the exact right proportions - Dr. Weintraub is your guy.
His staff is all lovely. Peri walked me through the months leading up to the surgery, giving support and reassurance whenever needed (which was often!). After the surgery, I must have called his assistant Myra 10 times in 3 days, with every little question that arose. She was patient, and funny, and kind - basically the kind of person that you'd want to hang out with and talk to even if you weren't worried about whether you should blow your nose (fyi, you shouldn't), or if it was a problem that the tape holding the long end of your sutures came off (you can just replace it).
As for the man himself, Dr. Weintraub is simultaneously kind and elegant. He's incredibly reassuring, and answered his home phone on a Sunday afternoon after I texted him with a concern about some pain in my chin.
As for the procedures: the price I listed above was for all three surgeries as well as some Botox to correct work by the prior person I saw for Botox, who left me with one eyebrow a quarter inch higher than the other.
The day of the surgery I was so nervous, but excited! It was in Dr. Weintraub's state of the art surgical suite, which is lovely. The nurse and the anesthetist both went over my entire chart with me - seperately. My IV was started. Dr. Weintraub came in and spoke with me, made the marks, and I'm fairly certain I walked into the surgical operating room, but I really can't be sure. The next thing I knew, I was being gently woken, and told the surgery had gone beautifully. Apparently, while I was asleep my husband decided he would feel better if we had a nurse for the first night, so I was walked out of the recovery room by my boyfriend, and a very sweet woman with a lovely Irish accent.
The first night - I am so glad the nurse was with us. My eyes were the only thing that really hurt, I believe from the sutures, and they felt like they had gravel in them. But throughout the night, even as I mostly slept, she iced them every 20 minutes as the doctor had recommended, made sure I had my medicine, changed the bandages beneath my nose which caught the small amount of blood that leaked out, and helped me to the restroom whenever I needed it.
By the next morning my eyes were fine, but my chin had become quite sore, and ached even with the pain pills. My nose I was shocked to find did not hurt at all.
That day I spent indoors, sleeping, watching TV, and reading. My husband got me food as needed, and paid attention to when I was supposed to take my meds. I DEFINITELY wanted to take them sooner than I should, because of the ache in my chin, but finally added in ibuprofen as well which helped quite a bit.
By the next day, I was mobile. Not being from New York (and not being much for laying in bed all day), I didn't want to miss anything, so my boyfriend and I went on long walks through different parts of the city.
On Friday my chin bandages were removed, as well as the little bit of bandage to catch any blood from my nose. I had some pretty intense bruising around my eyes, and my jawline was a lovely spring shade of chartreuse, which would be great as eye shadow but not so much as a skin tone.
At that point I was still on the pain pills and ibuprofen, but I was almost completely back to my normal activity level. The jaw pain was still strong, and on Saturday I began to have some painful pulling sensations. On Sunday I began to have them more intensely, I think in part because I was taking my pain pills less often. That led to my emergency call to Dr. Weintraub. He was incredibly reassuring again, and explained the reasoning for the type of pain I was having.
Today, Wednesday, my splint is finally off! My Mom came with me, and when she saw how I looked she started crying because of how overjoyed I was with the results. She told me, and then my father on the phone, that she never thought having plastic surgery would somehow make me look more like myself. She says my lips (which have always been quite full) look even more beautiful somehow because my face is in such balance. My nose is quite swollen, but straight and lovely and not at all bulbous, and miracle of miracles - I have a chin! A gorgeous, real, proportional chin! My eyes are still healing, but they look so much more open and shapely (without that scary deer in headlights look). Anyway, I'll be adding some more along with pictures tonight - but I really felt the need to share with people what this experience, and this wonderful doctor, have done for me!
