I am posting this as a PSA hoping that it reaches people who are considering Radiesse before they make a fateful decision that could ruin their faces and their lives.
Radiesse has been marketed as a longer-lasting alternative to HA fillers like Restylane and Juverderm. This could not be further from the truth. While HA fillers mimic dermal tissue, Radiesse mimics BONE. It is impossible to reverse and lasts far beyond the claimed 12-18 month life. It is only recommended for use along bone structure but many aestheticians will place it anywhere.
I first got Radiesse injections in my nasolabial folds by a nurse (terrible decision I know). I had asked for Juvederm and she pushed Radiesse on me because it would last longer - never mentioning that it's completely irreversible. It did nothing for my NL folds and created huge lumps around my mouth that dragged my face down and made me look 5-10 years older. Not only does Radiesse last for years, it also creates scar tissue under your skin that can be permanent.
Radiesse is an heinous nightmare substance that should never have been approved for the general market. It should be pulled immediately - however that is extremely unlikely with the power of the big pharma money over the regulatory process (and their cozy relationship with plastic surgeons).
If you listen to nothing else I have said, listen to this: NEVER EVER EVER ALLOW ANYONE TO INJECT RADIESSE INTO YOUR FACE. No matter what they tell you.
The good news: there is hope. Four years later, I suspect that the Radiesse is gone however the lumps remained which is likely scar tissue. I found a plastic surgeon highly-experienced in injectibles who suggested trying 5-FU injections to break up the scar tissue. I agree to try a small amount (mixed with a small amount of Kenalog). I had tried everything and was not expecting any results - resigned to the fact that I'd be living with this forever.
Shockingly though... I *did* see results. The mass decreased and the area looked visibly improved. Of course I'm still extremely suspicious of injecting anything into my face so I am only doing small amounts of 5-FU in sessions six weeks apart. But I can tentatively say there IS noticeable improvement.
Short version: Radiesse is an insidious, evil substance that will deform you and may last forever. But if you've already done it, there is hope if you're patient, do your research and are extremely cautious.
