After 8 months of Spiro Treatment...

millercarly
After being on spironolcatone for 8 months, I have decided to go on accutane. My dermatologist recommended that birth control with progesterone may help with my breakouts. I've been taking Vienva birth control for two months and its actually been pretty helpful with my breakouts. So I definitely like that. But I'm still getting breakouts even with both the spiro and birth control. My dermatologist then said lets just go on accutane because its been so long and nothing is working long term. I'm taking my first pill tomorrow morning. I'll be on 20 mg which is low I think. But I really hope it'll work! I'll definitely post monthly pictures.

Congrats. Accutane is definitely worth a shot If you’ve tried evening else. Keep in mind though that if you have an underlying hormonal issue, accutane will work for a while but you may relapse at some point in the future.

Sorry I never responded- actually have forgotten about my acne since I've been on Accutane! It's helped so much; I'd say around month 2 or 3 it started working great. I haven't had a breakout since being on it. I am nervous to go off though because I don't want my hormonal acne to come back. So I'm trying to stay on it for as long as its safe (maybe 12 months?). Anyway, once the doctor tells me I can stop the medicine I'll update again. Hopefully there is no real underlying hormonal problem I have; or else I'll have to see more doctors! Thanks again for the post, hope my posts have been useful to some!

Month 7 Update

I am still experiencing breakouts once every two weeks and in the same area. So my derm recommended I go on birth control to help control my acne. I'm trying Vienva, never been on it before. I will give it 3 months to work, which is when I'll see my derm again. Fingers crossed it works! So over these gross break outs.

Are you also using topical medications?

Yeah, I was using Retina and Clindamycin topical gels. I found they were kind of helpful.

Month 6

My skin has definitely improved in the past 6 months. I still get a pimple here and there every now and then. It's always in the same spot (jawline, cheek and neck area). I'm going to see my dermatologist in the beginning of November, so I'm going to ask her to increase the dose just a bit more so I don't get any more breakouts. But overall I am very happy that the acne is under control. Phase two for me will be laser to get rid of the acne scars on my cheeks, but that won't be right now.

Hi did you receive laser treatments? I’m on spiro and although it’s working it has left me with scars and discoloration. Did your scars fade at all during your treatment ?
