Like most acne sufferers I've been on every cream, gel, foam, wash, antibiotics, special diets- you name it, I've probably been on it. Nothing helped my acne long term. I realized I have hormonal acne; I'm always getting those deep underground pimples that stay for days and it always is in the same spot. I switch dermatologists to get some new perspective and she confirmed I have hormonal acne. She put me on Spironolactone. I am on 50 mg for 3 months and then I'm going in for a check up. I am currently on month 2. These pictures will give you a good idea how this medicine has helped.
Month 1: really cleared up my back acne which was a pleasant surprise, noticing less inflammation.
Month 2: clearing up my acne, not as frequent break outs, but definitely still getting those persistent ones on my jaw/chin/neck area same spot as always. The red dots are acne scars, I'm not sure if the medicine helps get rid of those or not. We'll see over the next month! I'll be sure to update month 3 when it comes around. I really hope it helps!

Side Effects
millercarlyJuly 9, 2017
I'm in the middle of my second month on Spiro and I'm spotting. It's strange because I have a normal period and I just got it a week and a half ago. So I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but I'll mention it to my dermatologist when I see her next month. Otherwise, everything else is just about the same. Still getting breakouts under my jawline on the left side mostly. What's different is I have small, underground bumpy breakouts on my forehead. This happens to me occasionally and I never really know what to do for it and it usually goes away on its own after a while. I looked it up online and the technical term for it I think is acne mechanica and its "sports induced acne" so I'll have to start washing my face right after I work out. Anyway, that's all!

How is your skin now? I'm currently around the same time you were with this post and experiencing spotting and no change in skin

I've been taking it for a month and I've already noticed the skin on my back and chest clear up. My face is getting better but I'm mainly also breaking out on the left jawline. I don't work out tho so I don't think it's "sports induced acne" for me. Thank you for sharing!
Are you having any side effects?
October 12, 2017
Yup, I had experienced the same thing! First thing I noticed was my back and chest acne cleared up within the first few weeks. And I was always very active on the left side of my jawline. Honestly love this medication because it really has toned down my acne quite a bit. The biggest issue now is one white head every couple weeks or so and that is nothing compared to my daily acne. No side effects really besides frequently using the bathroom, but if it means clear skin I don't care. :)

Right now my skin is looking better! I got two new pimples this morning, but usually I don't get anything new. My skin is looking much better than before I started this medicine. I hope your skin clears up soon :)

Hi, so sorry I just saw your message now! I'll post a picture of what my skin looks like now. Honestly, the spiro pills helped a lot for my skin...but I still get break outs. So it didn't "cure" my acne, although it helped calm it a lot. I'm actually going back to the dermatologist tomorrow to ask if she can increase my dosage because I've had a breakout on my chin that has lasted for 4 weeks...I'll keep checking this page, good luck to you!! Let me know how it works for you :) My advice is to stay patient- it takes a few months.

Beginning of Month 3
millercarlyJuly 23, 2017
Last week I experienced a breakout. Whiteheads popping up everyday. This week it's calming down and I just have a few pimples in the same exact area as always. A little disheartening since the derm said by month 3 is when I'll see the real results. I have an appointment with her in about 3 weeks so maybe we'll increase the dosage.

Did you try accutane?
Your acne appears quite severe. I have been there.
Just talk to your derm about it
You will be fine. Keep going

My derm said that if Spiro doesn't help clear me up she would recommend Accutane. I'm nervous to try it because of all the bad side effects, but at the same time I'm so tired of acne and constant breakouts. So I'm going to continue with the Spiro for a few more months and if its not giving me the results I want to see I'm going to do Accutane. Thanks!!

Accutane is the best thing that you can go for.. you will see results by end of month 4..Go for it when you are ready. Sure there are side effects but they are definitely worth going through.

I've heard the same thing and I'm at the point where I just want results asap...she just increased my dosage of Spiro so I'll give this another 3 months try and if I don't like what I see I'm just doing Accutane.

This breakout kinda looks like mine a few months ago when I was suffering a yeast infection all over my skin due to a lot of antibiotics prescribed for acne. Is it only on your face or also on the back and shoulders?
September 25, 2017
Sorry for my late response! I had very mild acne on my back and chest, mostly just on my neck and face. The spiro cleared up my back in maybe 2 to 3 weeks. It definitely has been helping!

Trust me when i say that the 3 month timeline does not apply to everyone. I did not start to see consistent clearing until a year and a half in! I still break out from time to time (like this past week) but spiro has made a difference. Tracking with photos like what you are doing definitely helps!

I'm really really happy with how spiro is helping my acne! I'm on month 4 now and I notice a huge difference! I get a few whiteheads every now and then but it's nothing like it was before I started. Fingers crossed it works like this all the time!

Accutane works but it may not be a long term thing. I've done three courses and cleared up for two years each time before acne came back. I definitely encourage you to give spiro and other methods a few months before accutane....
