Consultation Review - Dr. Steven Pearlman, Rhinoplasty

I never imagined I would come out of a rhino...

Worried me
I never imagined I would come out of a rhino consultation crying, but that is what happened in my case. I had scheduled a consult with Dr. Pearlman with a lot of hope. I even had to leave my toddler behind with his dad to travel to New York which was not easy for me. But unfortunately nothing could have prepared me for the way the consultation went.
The doctor ended my consultation abruptly as soon as I voiced a suggestion. He only told me to find a another surgeon as I have many questions! But he didn't even listen to more than one question!! and besides its my face....am I not supposed to have questions/concerns?? He literally walked out on me in barely 10 minutes after I had travelled for around 3 hours and waited for a month to meet him. I cannot fathom how can anyone be so rude and inconsiderate! I was appalled to say the least! It seems he does not want to hear anything from the patient and has a very condescending attitude. I had read about this attitude of his in other discussions threads and I guess people judged him right.

Worried me's provider

what were your questions / what did you ask? I was considering getting a consultation with this surgeon but after what you wrote I might not, I'm curious as to the details of this

I would love to hear as well! I have a consult with him at the end of the month... If he's really that dismissive, I don't want to throw away money in a consultation

So guys, here's what happened....the doc came in, examined my nose and since I was a little nervous, before talking much I asked him how he felt, to which he replied he's still thinking. After that as we moved to the computer image he asked me to show pics I had with me....I was barely on pic 2 and voiced my concern about fake looking triangular nostrils some ppl end up with. And then I merely suggested if the nose tip should not be raised too much as I don't want long distance between lips and nose and that was it! He got agitated and simply got up asking me to find another surgeon....I was almost teary which he didn't even notice as he stormed out of room and I sat there wondering where did it go wrong!!! I even asked him what he thinks/suggests but he just walked out :( He didn't charge me for the consult. But I have been to other docs who have listened to me and agreed/disagreed respectfully. So I really found this very upsetting! Wish I had never gone to him!

At least you know you are not getting BS'd. I have consulted with docs that agree with everything I say but thank god I never went with them.

I am sorry that you were unhappy with your consultation. You came with photos of models and actresses who had features that are very different than yours. I performed an evaluation and computer imaging. I do that to demonstrate potential results. If I do not feel I can meet someone's expectations, then its important not to proceed with surgery.
Rhinoplasty is very subjective. Patient's and surgeon's goals should coincide. Sometimes it is necessary to disappoint someone if we feel we cannot meet their expectations. There are many superb rhinoplasty surgeons. I cannot speak for other surgeons, but if we feel that we cannot achieve what the patient desires, it is best not to operate on them. I did not says that you should not have surgery, only that I was not sure I could meet your expectations. The last thing I want to do is disappoint someone I have operated on. I am sorry you felt I was abrupt, but that was explained as well. There is no good way to tell someone that we prefer not to operate.

Dr. Pearlman - you do NOT listen, and have a condescending attitude towards patients. You want the patients to smile and nod along - any question is met with irritation. I did not come with pictures of models or actresses - i just had questions, and I was dismissed. I went to other top surgeons (ie, pastorek, rizk, etc) and ALL of them were listening , and treated me very nicely. At the end of the day, they may not be the surgeons for me, but i walked out feeling good in my consults with them - however, that was not the case with you.

I did come in with lot of pictures BUT I showed just one.... you did not even see the other pictures.... the other pictures were pictures of actual patients where I liked the result and others which I did not like....I don't think its reasonable to make it sound like I wanted to have a nose which would turn me into someone actress/model like. I am very well aware of limitations of my nose structure/skin type. But anyways, I don't know what the real reason for the denial was, but in the end my point is only that I waited a lot for this consult and made arrangements and there are better ways to disagree and saying that you prefer not to operate.

He didn't treat me like a client, i would rather have the one who agrees with everything and i see thru that facade and walk away feeling ok. With him u walk out with a horrible feeling in pit of ur stomach.
