Consultation review: lacks sensitivity and boundaries

ORIGINAL POST

Lacks Sensitivity and Boundaries

I think it's important to start with a good.

The office was very nice and the staff was absolutely attentive and respectful. I think the doctor means well.

I think if you are of a certain demographic and you are the recommended weight on 'that chart' you will have a great experience!

I got to my appointment early to fill out paperwork. I was finished by the time my actual appointment was scheduled. There was a family that came in after me but was taken back to the patient rooms before me. I immediately thought well maybe there is another doctor or someone else said they were seeing. I was then taken back to the patient room about 5 minutes after the family.

I waited in the room for 40 minutes. Now that may be a red flag for many and they would have left but unfortunately I was responding to emails on my phone and lost track of time. I did come out of the room once and ask the front desk when he would see me as I had somewhere I need it to be at a certain time. They said he would be there shortly as he was printing photos. This confirmed he took the family before me.

When he got to the room his personality was very upbeat. He assessed my needs and with that we went through some of my medical history. Everything was good until we started talking about my weight as I am a overweight woman (but within my goal weight of 10-15 pds). I did let him know I have some triggers as I've been fat all my life. He ignored those triggers. He asked me why I thought I never lost a lot of weight and then started pushing hormone therapy treatment.

At one point I said to him I'm sure you can see that this is causing me anxiety, and he said to me no you look fine.

He eventually switched the subject to my neck. Performed an examination and was honest and said he doesn't know if he could treat me as there could be some residual fat still there. He recommended another doctor in Ohio somewhere and I let him know I wasn't interested in traveling. I respected that and honestly thought that was the end of the consultation. However. He continued to go back to the hormone therapy treatment.

I explained to him I had anxiety but he continued on an on. I even told him that talking about my weight takes me back to being a 5-year-old child sitting in a Doctor's office and being told I need to lose weight. He kept saying that he wasn't talking about weight but was talking about hormone therapy. I don't think he realized that the reason he brought up hormone therapy is because he asked me >>> "why do I think I have never lost weight?" <<<
That statement has stayed with me since my visit.

The only reason he actually stopped talking about hormone therapy and left the room was because I closed my eyes and repeated "I don't want to talk about this anymore" multiple times.

What I don't think doctors realize is the effect this has on patients after they leave. I had a depressive episode for at least a week after I left his office. All I could hear and my head was "why do you think you've never lost the weight." I want to remind you I came here because of the extra fat on my neck from losing weight.

The office thought I was upset when I left because of his consultation on my neck. I actually called them back after I left to remind them that I sat in the office for 40 minutes and I left upset because he focused so much on my weight. Because it took so long for everything I missed my next task on my thing to do that day which was very important. I said multiple times to the front desk and the doctor it was very important.

I have not had the confidence to go to another doctor after this incident. I actually kind of think I don't deserve any help with my neck because I'm fat.

Response from Dr. Joseph:
I wish we could make everyone happy 100% of the time, but sometimes people may not agree with our approach. When we see that someone is upset by our advice, it’s saddening for all of us, and we apologize, and we refund the consultation fee. Thank you.
