IPL/BBL Burns and Stripes on Arms

ORIGINAL POST

Warning...do not get laser treatments from anyone...

$750
Warning...do not get laser treatments from anyone that isn't qualified. In Florida, only Doctors and Physician Assistants are authorized (which still doesn’t guarantee a good outcome). Stephanie Wilbanks (owner & only an aesthetician) from Emerald Coast Med Spa performed IPL/BBL (also referred to as laser) burned me and after the burns and ipl areas resolved, was left with zebra stripes!! She then wanted to charge me to fix it! (talk about a racket!!) I had to contact InMode/Invasix (the laser manufacturer) to request that they step in and instruct her on the protocol to resolve the striping, because her methodology was to burn me a second time!! (apparently this is how she learned from InMode according to her) Not only did she not “skin-type” me, she treated me without any gel and obviously the setting was too high and the technique was horrible (I later found out that a 20% overlap in two directions is the preferred method to prevent striping)
This is what $750 gets you (pictures provided). I also learned that if you complain, you get called "psycho and cray cray". Lovely customer service (not). Unfortunately I did my homework after the fact – so I thought I’d post this so anyone who is contemplating this and other “non-invasive” services do their homework and only get treatment from an authorized AND trained Physician.

Wow! The only psycho and cray cray person is who did this to you. She needs to stop offering this "treatment" since she clearly has no idea what she is doing. I'm so sorry this happened to you and the personal insult she did to you is horrible.

I have the same thing right now - and it's on my face :( I'm devastated. I used a Groupon and went to a local spa. 2 friends had used this woman with great outcomes so I thought it would be safe. I have those same zebra stripes on my face. It's been 15 days.

Did you find a way to get this fixed?

They say wait 3-4 weeks for the treated area to slough to see how much treatment you'll need to correct the striping. My doctor recommended more IPL but with a 20% overlap in two directions (which is how it should have been done in the first place). They will have to be lower setting with that technique. Also my DR recommended chemical peels and product (hydroquinone) and a light acid topical and sunscreen reliously. Soooo sorry this happened to you.

Oops. religiously typo

Hope your face is better Whitney!

It's getting there but no where near fixed :( People still comment all the time on it. I've had a chemical peel and been using an HQ cream. My dermatologist doesn't want to do another IPL for a bit more. I'm trying to stay out of the sun as best I can. How are your arms?

I am very sorry this happened to you. Was your face pretty tan at the time that you received the IPL treatment?

Your skin was too tan for an IPL. You were not burned. The pigment you had was lifted at the place the light was applied. Places other than the face, will often stripe and patients should always be aware that at least 2 treatments are needed to remedy this; there is no way to have the light disperse exact on over pigmented skin. The only misuse was the color of your skin at the time of treatment. In Florida, this would be a constant concern.

A competent doctor would have avoided this! What a horrific experience this person had to go through. The doctor/med spa owner should not be doing this procedure on people, obviously!

I wasn't tan. I have dark skin and a lot of pigment naturally. I should have been skin typed and a lower setting AND ultra sound gel should have been used AND a qualified person should have performed the procedure. I was burned and now have hypos pigment a ton in several areas on my upper arms where it was burned the worst.

Yeah it was an esthetician who did it (the Med Spa owner Stephanie Wilbanks) who isn't supposed to be using lasers in FL and obviously doesn't know what she's doing

Has it gotten any better? This is exactly how my arms currently look.
October 17, 2017
It only got better after 5 more treatments of IPL and laser lightening x 2 and a chemical peel. (Almost one year later). I still have some major patches of discoloration on my arms (the areas that she missed due to poor the unique). I'll have to keep working on those. I keep sunblock on all the time too SPF 70.
October 20, 2017
Have you used any topicals like hydroquinone?
October 20, 2017
Yes. I'm using tropicals with hydroquinone now (and sunblock) to keep the stripes and splotches that she didn't hit with IPL from being so apparent. I'm told to only use hydroquinone for 8 months on then switch to other lightening products without hydroquinone for the same period of time. (8 months on;8months off)

Did it become better over the last Four months? Do you still have white stripes?
January 12, 2018
I have white stripes on my right forearm and have two ugly patches of over treated areas on both upper arms next to these patches of freckles that weren't treated. But not in a subtle way...it's rectangular.
January 12, 2018
yes!! it’s practically gone and has been for about a month. I had one for ipl done by an actual dermatologist and used a hydroquinone cream for about a month. don’t lose hope!

I'm so sorry for your experience! I hope you've had some resolution since your post. Trolling RealSelf is SUCH and education. I got a call today for consultation I requested for tear trough filling, the aesthetician who called me didn't even know what that was. Obviously I won't be going there. Thank you so much for being so thorough in your documenting of your experience. Hoping all future work you may consider goes amazingly well and reverses this experience for you . Much love! Jam
