Lipo Gone Wrong - Toronto, Ont

I am 42 yrs old and have never had kids. I have always hated my shape and finally decided to do something about it. I was tired of my thighs rubbing together, wanted to remove some bulk from by stomach and get rid of the dreaded back fat. I consulted 3 board certified surgeons and was told by all 3 that I was a perfect candidate for liposuction because I had great skin elasticity. After weighing my options, I finally chose my surgeon and decided to take the plunge. First thing I will say is that I am an idiot for booking this surgery in the summer. I did so because I had 2 weeks off of work, so I knew that I didn't have to worry about missing work during my recovery. But for those of you considering the surgery, don't do it in the summer! I was stuck wearing this ridiculous compression garment in the hottest weeks of the year...it was almost impossible to find attractive things to wear. I didn’t tell anyone that I was having this surgery, so it was really difficult to hide it. It was the worst summer of my life.
During the surgery, I was put under general anesthesia and treated my inner thighs, upper & lower stomach, flanks and bra roll. After the surgery I was pretty woozy, but I remember the surgeon coming to tell me that everything went well and that I would be very happy with the results. I was thrilled to hear it!
The recovery was not fun. I have a very high tolerance for pain and didn’t take any pain meds. I was more nauseous in the beginning because of the anesthesia. After that, I felt tender, actually like my whole body was badly bruised, but again it was manageable. The most difficult part was the leaking. Because it was tumescent lipo, my PS pumped me with over 5 liters of liquid. That stuff was coming out of my holes for weeks. Bandages were not containing it, so I finally started taping thin maxipads to my body to soak up the liquid so that it wouldn't stain my clothes.
Once the leaking stopped, the swelling gradually subsided and I noticed a couple of problem areas right away. My stomach looked lumpy, I still had rolls on my back and my thighs had dents. My PS assured me that I was still swollen and that I would not see the full results until 6 months.
Through the several follow-up appointments, I heard it all...I was swollen...still swollen...then he said I should have had a tummy tuck (even though every surgeon I say told me I did NOT need a tummy tuck since I had never had kids). On my 6 month appointment, I told him that it was clearly no longer swollen and I felt that a couple of areas needed a touch up. He felt that the remaining fat was normal and would not feel comfortable doing any further lipo.
So here I am…$12K later and feeling deformed and extremely disappointed. I am now consulting other PS to see if anything can be done to improve my situation. I am depressed, still paying off the surgery and desperate to find a way to fix the damage.
For anyone considering having the surgery, here is my warning: I hope that the surgery is huge success, but you should know that there is a possibility that you will feel worse afterwards. Stay positive and visualize a great outcome, but be mentally prepared for a plan B if the results are not what you hoped for. I had no plan B because I was 100% convinced that my surgery would be a success. Now I am devastated. :(?
For some reason, I can only upload one picture at a time, but please be patient. I will show you the before & after of all areas...

I am thinking about lipo too. You don't look at all deformed and your back looks really different. Maybe your expectations were too high?

Well, thank you. Maybe my expectations were too high, but with the before & after pictures I saw and after being told by 3 surgeons that I had great skin elasticity, I wasn't expecting to have dents in my thighs, back rolls and a stomach pooch AFTER lipo. I have consulted with 2 other surgeons who agree that there is enough fat in the belly to be removed and that if I were their patient, it would be part of a free touch up. Let's just say, it was an expensive life lesson.

almost the exact same issues with me. i am 40ish and had no pain after. i dont feel like my doc took enough out either. she said i would look off balance. i had absolutely no complications and i had mine in june of last year. boy, no body told me how fast the fat would come back. you cannot even tell i had lipo on my lower back, lower ab. i wish i would have got a bbl done with the fat she supposedly removed. i paid 6k and i have a super long way to go before i am done. i feel like i cannot really blame my doc as i did not change me eating habits but it seems like it took weeks for the fat to come back. now i am forced to do what i was supposed to do before the surgery: try to fix my self. i am prone to fibroids so my lower ab will never be to my statndards no matter how hard i try. and i cannot afford a touch up for years now. well, sis, you dont have to go thru this alone.

Did no one speak to you about post surgical compression? This is the most critical part, because without it, there are apparently pockets of air which cause the pooching. You can still improve your results now with proper compression. Speak to David at Accucare - a Canadian company that specializes in this wordlwide. He spent a lot of time with me pre-surgery to explain the benefits of compression.

Yes, I wore my garments faithfully for 2 months. It was during summer, so I suffered but I didn't care. I was going to do whatever I had to to ensure good results. But compression garments can't flatten leftover fat, and as you can see in my picture, there is quite a bit left in my lower stomach.

It really does look so much better!

Front view AFTER lipo

This is after the surgery. There is slightly less volume, but you can still see the stomach pooch

Too much fat leftover!

As you can see, there is still lots of pinchable fat after surgery. My PS says this is normal fat...I disagree!
