Perfecting my Teeth in a Short Amount of Time
28 y/o female, never had braces as a teenager. I want straight teeth for my wedding.
My teeth weren't extremely crooked, but I also was not pleased with them. I was always slightly insecure with how big my front teeth were compared to the others. I barely did any research, thinking I was just going to go to a dentist and get veneers. My dentist convinced me I needed to get braces to cure a crossbite as well as straighten my teeth.
I decided to get the braces because they were cheaper than just getting veneers. I also figured I would benefit long term from having issues with my vote fixed. The braces cost $7,500. I got a loan through Lending Club and was able to pay it off in 3 months.
Got the braces Nov 8th, 2018. The process was unpleasant. Getting molds done is never pleasant! The whole ordeal took about 3 hours. The six month smiles braces are "clear" and less noticeable than metal braces. They are still extremely noticeable in my opinion. I like red wine and curry, so they stain yellow quickly.
The pain the next day was extreme! I had never felt mouth pain like that. It felt like my mouth had been hit by a train! Definitely plan on taking at least a day off of work if you are getting these. I could barely talk and I could chew or eat anything but soft foods.
Within a few weeks, I was back to normal. Luckily, I loved mashed potatoes and soft foods, so I did not starve. I was also given rubber bands to wear on the right side of my teeth. I also have "bite ramps" which keep me from biting down completely.
The bite ramps are perhaps the most annoying part of the braces. I find myself grinding my teeth almost constantly. The ramps are so unnatural and make it hard to eat.
I'm now over three months into my six month smile journey. The main annoyance is keeping them clean when I eat. It's nearly impossible not to get food all over my teeth. I avoid spinach and hard foods. My bite ramps are not as high as they first were, so I'm able to chew more affectively now. I can even bite into sandwiches now!
I've noticed slight differences with my smile. Mostly, my smile has widened. My teeth used to curve inwards towards my tongue, and now they have become straighter standing up. I also have more space between where my teeth used to crowd. The biggest notice has been in the front two teeth. I'm still wanting a bit more fullness on the teeth on either side of my two front teeth.
I'm almost used to the pain now, but I do want to warn anyone looking into this treatment that it is, in fact, extremely painful. I consider myself able to handle pain, but there were days where I was super miserable. It's also frustrating feeling limited on what I could and could not eat. I also broke brackets and bars quite a few times. My dentist is super generous and has fixed several broken places. Again, let me just state, adult braces, or any braces, are super painful.
Definitely take as much wax as they will give you. Take ibuprofen, avoid excessive chewing, eat mashed potatoes, and invest in a Philips Sonicare toothbrush and a Waterpik. The Waterpik will save your life!
tldr:
PROS: relatively quick (6 months), can fix your cross bite
CONS: expensive, painful, turn yellow very quickly
I'll update as the months pass. Cannot wait to get them off!
