Bad aftercare experience - developed tissue necrosis
Necrosis and Thousands of Wound Care Bills Later
I honestly thought I was making the best choice that was closest to home. Excellent reviews, drainless tt, couldn’t ask for more. However my experience was a nightmare. Two days after the procedure I ran a fever > 101 and was told it was from “anesthesia.” I could barely breathe because the post op garment was so constricting, which I have since discovered is not optimal for flap perfusion. I ended up with a seroma and necrosis. On day 7, I was finally seen in the office for a debridement and drainage of seroma without any local anesthetic. Yes, most was numb, but not all. I was told to put medical grade honey on it and wash it in the shower. No cultures were performed at this point, one week later more debridement down to the muscle was performed. I was told to continue to shower and pack with gauze. I decided it was best to seek wound care before I got septic, I was placed on doxycycline while we waiting for a culture to come back which was positive for pseudomonas. I wore a wound vac for 2 months. Dr. Curtsinger did not offer any reimbursement for $15k wound care and quite honestly I didn’t want the “free” revision at that point. I have been scarred physically and mentally from this experience. Also my nipples were not the same size.
Bad Aftercare Experience
Long story short, I developed tissue necrosis. No nitro paste ordered, only DMSO 2 days after necrosis set in bc pharmacies were out of stock. After a few weeks of in office debridements and being told to put honey on the wound, I was only getting worse. Once the wound got big enough I was told to do wet to dry dressing and that a wound vac wouldn’t speed healing. “Keep washing it in the shower,” no wound rinse was recommended. No antibiotics ordered since I wasn’t “running a fever.” I decided a wound care clinic was the best option (the hole was the size of my fist in my abd, all the way down to the muscle). So now I was 3 months on a wound vac and $14k in bills later bc insurance won’t pay for the vac or wound clinic. A revision has been offered at one year post op. but I’m mortified that this will happen all over again. Also knowing the “free wound care” offered by the surgeon wasn’t having positive results previously. Also my nipples are 2 different sizes, but my boobs look good
