Journey to Implant Removal (Explant) - Missouri

I was encouraged to get implants in 1996 by my fiancé' and his sister-in-law, who had herself undergone 14 cosmetic surgeries of various types. I got Mentor textured saline implants in April of 1996, being told of none of the the "cons", actually being told they could possibly last the rest of my life. In 2008, while they were being manipulated somewhat firmly, I felt a POP, and within hours lost volume. (they were only filled to 225 cc's, so not a lot of size difference). We have been in financial crisis for sometime, so I suffered in silence. For the last two years I have had some mysterious symptoms that can't be explained, and my primary doc suggested I have the implants removed to see if some of the symptoms disappear. I have scheduled surgery to explant, and most all doctors in my area advocate local anesthesia, as safer, and less expensive. I am now wondering what a simple removal without capsulectomy under local will feel like, as I am apprehensive about the sensations.

I'm so glad you started your story here in the review community. It's good that you're finally able to have this done and don't have to suffer anymore. Are you able to get sedation with the local anesthetic? If so, that should help a lot. My guess is you'll feel some pressure but no pain during your explantation.

Unfortunately they do NOT offer IV sedation, and very little oral sedation to help with anxiety and pain management.

Seriously? Can you request it?

They don't di any IV sedation, period. They said they will allow a small amount of oral sedative, and a Tylenol PM. And that is all.
It has been 24 hours since my explantation, and the local shots have now worn off. As you know, I was told this was a fairly straightforward procedure, well tolerated by the patient. Well, local anesthesia, plus oral sedation of 20 mg of Diazpam, and 2 5/500 Vicodin are definitely not enough to make this well tolerated. This DID in fact save about $600, but unless you specify, and get an agreement from the doctor and faculty, more sedation, as in 30-40 mg Diazpam, and somewhat higher doses of oral opiate painkillers will not make this well tolerated, especially when dealing with Textured Saline Implants. They don't just slide right out. The ARE sensations other than the initial shots, and brief pulling and pressure. When they have to cut or separate your tissue that's fused with the texturing, it's very uncomfortable. I highly recommend either getting advance agreement of high oral doses do sedative/opiate pain killer, or go ahead and spent a few more hundred on the Twilight (IV) sedation, or go for the big money and get general if your health is good. If anyone has specific questions, please feel free to ask, I will be monitoring and updating for a few weeks. Right now, I'm waiting as long as I possibly can to hold off taking the pain medication I was sent home with. I was also given a prescription that, without insurance, is $103 for one round of therapy. I will most likely need 2 rounds. This is not a journey, or experience, I wish on any woman. Please think twice before getting implants......the complications for many years down the road are extensive, expensive, and painful.
