WORTH IT
For the last 31 years of my life I have suffered from a cross bite and open bite...after searching for doctors I finally came across an amazing Doctor in Mission Viejo, Ca...he was so charming and intelligent I knew he was going to be my surgeon..after a year of braces treatment on 4/4/2016 I went in for surgery...the first 2 weeks are toughest...as I was extremely swollen and I had a splint in my mouth...my upper jaw was cut into 3 and my bottom into 2....once I woke up in recovery...I was feeling ok..my teeth were rubber banded shut....and pain wasn't bad at all...I was on a pain pump...my hospital stay lasted 2 days...first few days your bleeding from mouth..getting used to splint...overall tired from surgery and def swollen....once home I used a ton of ice packs and arnicare for bruising/swelling...the first 2 weeks are liquid diet so all I ate was soups and shakes....this was the hardest part of my journey as I love food so be prepared because it's mentally challenging...over the next 14 days my face drastically went down..I still have min swelling but am beginning to feel completely normal...at 3 weeks I had my splint out and it felt great because you can brush your teeth and it's stinky and funky in there so taking it off was heaven..after that I was able to eat soft foods the last 3 weeks...currently I am 6 weeks post...I lost 10 pounds total from surgery...I had no post side effects...besides swelling....I did have numbness in lip for awhile post surgery but now it's subsided.....I can't open my mouth wide only 2 fingers but it will take time to return to full range of motion...I am back to eating normally whatever I can comfortably...I haven't tried nothing super hard as I want to wait for further healing but overall I am beyond happy! My smile looks beautiful and I can't wait till braces fully come off!! Dr. Caputo is wonderful and I highly recommend him if you have jaw issues...him and his staff are amazing......

Hey just saw this :) congrats! i'm not sure when my surgery is but it will be inbetween the two years of me having my braces on which im getting June 1. I'm getting double jaw surgery. My upper jaw is going to be pushed back and my lower jaw is going to be brought forward so my chin/face will look more defined.

i'm trying to figure out how to pay since i have a part time job. i'm hoping i will get approved by care credit but im not sure if they cover the amount of this surgery since its expensive. i have insurance but i have to see if it will cover any of this surgery at all.

Also a question. Did you notice a difference in your cheeks after surgery? Like they improved?
May 19, 2016
Yes because there still slightly swollen, if you look at me pre op my cheeks were very in lol and now there still a bit puffy but I am only 6 weeks post...it can take anymore from now to 3 months to fully see the outcome of my facial changed but overall I look the same :) which is great! And my lips did change the bottom one got bigger which is a positive because I had a small lip before lol I will def try and post more pics later

Glad you shared your story!
I will let you know for sure!
The only thing i dont like its the waiting. I have CT scan in June and another one in July plus i have to choose which Dr should i go with after i listen to his plan of the surgery and all that stuff. We will see how it goes!

So glad yours went well. Nice to hear a good review! I need my top jaw split as well and not sure about the bottom. My top jaw is a little narrower than the bottom. Was this your problem too? Anyway I was just talking to my ortho about it today. That part scares me the most as Ive heard horror stories on here... I did watch the whole bloody surgery on youtube... Uughhhh. So I do know what Im in for. Im 56 yrs old and finally have insurance that will cover it. My surgeon did put in the contract that I would have three splints... At $1,500 each. Do you know why I would have three? Well, Im so glad to hear it all went well. Please continue to update!

Thank you! I had a cross bite and a open bite, so a whole lot of teeth went unused for years and I was using one side of my mouth to chew. They need to cut my upper jaw into three pieces to adjust it with the bottom and the bottom was cut in two and brought forward. I have 6 screws/plates in my face. I do agree that I seen many negative reviews on here about jaws and thats why I thought it was best to post something positive because I literally love my doc and if someone lives in the CA area I would recommend him. 3 splints I am unsure why you have 3? I only had 1 on because once they move your jaw around thats pretty much it, there shouldn't be any changes. What exactly are they doing? And thank you I def will!

For me they are moving my top jaw forward and my bottom jaw back. Ive also asked to have my pointy chin dropped down a little on the end. Im now 4 months into the braces at age 56. Will have surgery next summer 2017. Things have moved a lot with braces. My bite is much worse now but that was to be expected. In the end it will all be worth it.

Hi susancampinggal. I was wondering what insurance you have? Im 34 and been needing this for a while. Was considering purchasing insurance but I'm about to start a job that offers insurance but it doesn't seem like it will cover this procedure.

Hey everyone I am a bit over 3 months now and I feel better then ever! I have such a beautiful smile and am a few weeks from removing my braces!!!! I have no side effects post surgery at all...and I can open my mouth 3 fingers spaces...I pretty much eat whatever I want and am just soo happy...I still have ridges at the bottom of my teeth from the years of not using them..once my braces are off my ortho will shave them and make them look pretty...again I can't thank not only Dr.Caputo but my ortho Dr. B whom I also plan to do a review..with both their expertise and team work they were able to fulfill my dream..jaw surgery is an extensive surgery that requires patient and a good team of doctors..this is your face...your mouth..your teeth...there no rooms for errors..I have seen some sad story on here from people who had the most horrific outcomes...but that's why I am here to share a positive one..I highly recommend my team for anyone out there and although each case varies rest assured your with the best and most honest team of people... Xoxo

Hi there! I'm looking to having jaw surgery but feel overwhelmed with so many Maxillofacial surgeons. Also I'm going to have to maybe pay out of pocket as I haven't found a surgeon that takes my insurance. Do you mind sharing around how much was your procedure? I'm in Orange County

I am so sorry I wish I knew how much :( My insurance covered the whole cost but maybe you can drop in for a consultation he's worth it! ;)
Im scared now because im reading so many reviews from people who regrets it and some doesnt so im trying not to think about the negativity and that everybody is different. Im in Canada tho so its hard to find whos the best doctors in Canada because cant find any good reviews.
So enjoy your beautiful smile!
