Microshading / Microblading Looks Like Old Outdated Eyebrow Tattoo
I found this technician on Yelp who has excellent reviews and beautiful photos. Very natural, light-touch, which was exactly the look I was going for. My natural eyebrows were full enough, I typically just pencil in a few sparser spots. I wanted the microblading to just fill in those spots.
I booked a consult with her without doing a whole lot of research on microblading/microshading, and instead relied on her photos. She had hundreds of them on her page. In hindsight, one of the major red flags was that she spent very little time with me during the consult, didn't explain the procedure, and pretty much just drew on eyebrows for me to show me what they'd look like. I went ahead and booked an appointment with her a few days later. The other thing is that I had lash extensions done by her before and liked her work, so I thought I could trust her artistic abilities.
Come the day of my microblading appointment, she spent some time drawing in my eyebrows again and made sure it was the shape and arch I wanted. The only good thing about her was that my eyebrows were even, symmetrical, and the shape was great. She does have an artistic eye for drawing and shaping, but her skills end there.
I told her repeatedly that I didn't want the colors too dark, she never showed me the colors she was going to use, she reassured me that they won't be black because no one uses black anymore, and she told me she's not going to give me the outdated, angry face, tattoo look. She had also shaved off the ends of my natural eyebrows and I knew that this shape was going to be very hard to maintain. When I pointed this out, she said she also does waxing so she could wax those tails for me when they grow out, or I could just tweeze them. That should've been another huge red flag, but it was too late.
When she was done, I was horrified. My eyebrows were exactly what she said she was not going to do. They were like 2 blackest sharpies drawn on my face. They were extremely dark, and looked nothing at all like any of the "immediately after" photos she had posted. I felt desperate and ruined and was just in a state of shock. It was then that she said she gave me microshading instead, not the more natural microblading, because no one gets microblading anymore, it hurts, and they don't heal well. She said microshading was the new alternative, heals faster, and looks better. I didn't even know the difference at that time, but I was too disappointed to process much of what she said. I remember telling her they were too dark, and she said it'll fade.
I went home and immediately began scouring the internet for microblading, microshading, healing process, and how to fade botched eyebrow jobs. I realized that she probably tried to do ombre or powder brows on me, which I would've been totally fine with had she actually done a good job. Anyway, I read all the posts I could find about how to fade them and how much they'll naturally fade as they heal.
I had them done Thursday evening, and was up at 4:30AM Friday morning because I was so distressed and horrified about my eyebrows. I began googling again about how to get rid of them. On the 2nd day (Friday), I stopped doing all of the after care. Instead, I washed my face, I used some hydrogen peroxide, and I even tried the toothpaste trick that someone posted here or on Reddit, which burned! So I washed it off. My eyebrows were so horrifically dark that I just had to call in sick to work. I was too embarrassed to leave the house and I felt upset each time I looked in the mirror.
On the 3rd day, they were still super dark, so I began using retinol on them everyday since. That felt fine and didn't hurt or burn at all. On the 4th/5th day, my eyebrows began to flake off ever so slightly. I think because I got the shading instead of the blading, it was much easier and faster to heal. I continued washing my face daily and putting in retinol over my brows. On these 3rd and 4th days, I had to wear heavy makeup to work to try and compensate for these over-powering brows. Mind you, I have volume lash extensions, but with these crazy brows, you don't notice anything except my eyebrows.
By the 5th/6th/7th day, my eyebrows lightened some, to the point where one of them actually looks acceptable and natural enough of a color. The other brow, however, was still too dark. At this point, I went to another technician to see if there is anything they could do to help me, maybe put in some strokes to try and make them more natural? They told me there isn't anything they can do until my brows lighten some.
So, today is the 9th day. While I could go out without any makeup now, because they're no longer freakinshly dark, they still look BAD. They look like faded black tattoos. There are no strokes, no ombre, no powder, nothing at all natural. I look like one of those ladies who did the brow tattoos ages ago. She used a black color on me when she said she wouldn't, so I have these lightly fade black dense old-fashioned tattooed brows.
I was so upset with my brows, I began searching laser removal options. Found a place with good reputation and experience doing laser removal on bad microbladed brows. They told me that they can't treat me until 4+ weeks after the microblading, and since they tend to book out anyway, I made an appointment for exactly the 4th week from my microblading botch job. So about 3 more weeks from now, I hope to get my first laser removal.
While it is fine for me to leave the house now, I do not like the look of them. If the laser removal is successful, I don't know if I'd ever get microblading again. I'd say for the amount of natural brows I have, I'd rather spend a few minutes drawing in the sparse patches in the morning, then having to go through this expensive and distressing ordeal. If you're going to be doing your face and lips and eyes in the morning anyway, it's not a big deal to spend a bit more time to do your brows.
By the way, I think her Yelp photos are touched up, or not even her work. She had hundreds of these photos, which I think she must've touched up.
The photos I've attached are from my 1st day, 5th day, and now 9th day.
