How it works
- Our highly-trained Review Moderation team evaluates all reviews before they're published to ensure they're written by people like you and not a member of a doctor's office.
- This multi-step process takes up to 24 hours from review submission to publication.
- Doctors can't pay to have reviews removed or hidden.
- Reviews are only removed at the reviewer's request or if they violate our Terms of Service.
If you have questions or believe we should re-evaluate a published review, let us know.

Never Knew I Was Predisposed to MELASMA Until I Had RF Microneedling
See my pictures and beware!
As an olived skin person, I have always had some trouble with hyperpigmentation. But with the help of my fabulous derm, I maintained a beautiful complexion. I entered menopause this year and noticed some laxity and rf microneedling was suggested by an aesthetician at a cosmetic surgeon's office. I had moved 250 miles from my derm where I used to go for hydrafacial and other procedures.
I am so sorry I had this done. I had one treatment and it has triggered severe hyperpigmentation and melasma. This week I drove 250 miles to my dermatologist to fix this disaster. I will be making that drive monthly until this is fixed. Fortunately, the procedure did not burn or deeply scar my skin. The horrible marks should fade in about 4-6 months with constant treatment. However, I basically have melasma now and must be extremely careful.
The hyperpigmentation has affected my left cheek the most. My right cheek is kind of bad but can be covered with concealing mineral makeup. The left cheek is bad. My forehead, nose, and chin stayed fairly clear.
What happened? Apparently, the radio frequency can excite your melanocytes and cause them to do what happened on my face. Pretty much trigger melasma or something very much like it. I carefully reviewed this procedure for months and never came across a warning about this. I feel like it is my responsibility to let you all know this could happen. The problem is, you don't know is its going to happen until it actually happens.
The Dr's office where the rf microneedling was done offered to give me a VI Peel to reduce the spots. I was too scared so I didn't do it. Turns out, it's good that I skipped it! My dermatologist says that can cause rebound pigmentation.
I've since learned it's happened to others. My derm took one look and immediately knew what had happened. I've been frustrated and sad about my face and how that it can recover. I want to save anybody I can from this heartbreak.
Honestly, I don't know if it would have worked to tighten my face. I'm already over 50 and was looking really good for my age before this. I also got really swollen for days after the treatment.
I'm not interested in blaming anybody. I just want you to be fully and honestly informed about what could happen.
I've included photos from how I looked makeup free before treatment, 3 days after rf microneedling, 5 days after, and 24 days after. It's been 8 weeks now, and I'm just getting under way with my derm.
