Fat Transfer to face age 60 - Melbourne, FL

My face has gotten very hollow over the years, and so I went to a local dermatologist to see about fillers, and the total cost he quoted me was just over $9,000 for Sculptra and Juvaderm for face and lips and all the various hollows of my face, including also under eye areas. That would only last 2 years maximum, so I started searching for other ideas and came across fat transfer, which I has heard about from another surgeon when I had a facelift in 2007, but at that time it was not really very mainstream yet. I think in the past 5 years, it's gotten much easier to find.

So on 10/16/17 I decided to go ahead and try this because my face was really so hollowed out, I figured anything would help. I ended up choosing Roger Bassin MD, because he was on Dr. Oz, I was able to see his videos on YouTube of the exact procedure (he did it on the show). He created his own trademarked procedure called Aqualipo and Naturalfill, which as best I can understand is a way of getting the fat out with a high speed water jet and then the fat goes right into a depot which separates the stem cell enhanced fat and then straight into your face or wherever you need it.

The procedure was not very long, maybe an hour or hour and half. He prescribed meds for anxiety and meds for pain to be taken 1 hour prior, so you feel very good going in. I think they also numbed the area because I really had no pain, only pressure. The only part that hurt was the lips. My lips are just really teenyl, I figured I would try to see if I could pump them up some, but it seems fat has a hard time staying there, (at least on me). You feel stuff going on and you are awake, but you really don't care. I think the anxiety meds are really quite good!

The part I had liposuction on were my two posterior flanks. They really did not even have to be bandaged for more than a day, they healed up very quickly. And as far as the face healing, I really don't like going out when I look even a little off, so I waited a good week before I went out in public. But if you don't do lips, I think it's no problem.

So my final analysis is I really love the fact that fat is permanent. In fact, if I gain weight, my face will get fuller according to some surgeons I have listened to on YouTube. I kind of like staying in shape, but now I am considering liposuction as opposed to any dieting, because as you get older, it really does come off the face (depending on how your unique body stores fat, of course). I can really see doing this again in a couple years to really plump up the face. It is really worth it, in my opinion, so much more than fillers, which tend to dissipate rather quickly. Right now I am just a little over 60 days and very happy. Let me know what you ladies think and I am happy to answer your questions!

Hello Whiterobin, I was hoping you could post an update picture and your comments concerning your fat grafts...

Hi, I am so sorry I didn't ever post, but sadly only about 10% of the fat stayed. It was not worth the 5k I paid.

I am going to do the same thing, whiterobin! I am very scar phobic & wear my hair in a pony tail a lot - I don't know if a facelift is something I can commit to. Are you happier with the fat graft vs your facelift? The fat transfer makes more sense to me - it is what I need more than cutting & pulling... Merry Cristmas/Happy Holidays:-)

Yes, if fat transfer had been more mainstream in 2007, I certainly would have tried that first. Nowadays, doctors advocate doing fat transfer at the same time as a lift. One thing I would have started doing earlier is Retina A regularly and sunscreen. Believe it or not, big difference! (go to allday chemist.com to buy it cheap)

What was the cost?

$4500. The cost is dependent on the areas you want. I had him do just about every possible area on my face. MOst people might not need that.

I had fat transfer too and it didn’t last. Just do injectables now, which are lasting longer and longer.

Update - One year later

Hi everyone. It's one year later and unfortunately I have to admit, the fat transfer did not take as well as I had hoped. Some of the fat stayed, maybe 15% I'm guessing. The lips, not at all. The face could and should have been over filled, because my girlfriend said I looked good fit two months and after that it just disappeared. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the update! I'm considering this procedure. I'm reading everything I can. I don't know if there's a way they can make the fat 'take'. I think it depends on how aggressively your body reacts to it. I'm sorry it didn't last longer for you.

Hi Susan, yeah I'm very sad about it too, since I'm still paying it off and I am not a wealthy person. I'm considering trying it again with Dr. Mascaro in Delray because his office shows patients after a year or more, so you can really see how much. He said 50-60% retention rate. Hope this helps.

I also am disappointed by how quickly my fat disappeared. I loved it for a few months then felt like it started melting away where I needed it the most, the cheekbones. Some remained low on my cheeks and that has altered my appearance.

I had fat transfer to the face in 2015. I like you was on cloud nine for like 3 months I am also thin but was eating pizza and everything I could to hold the fat It took like 15 years off my face. But I also lost all the fat in Like 3 months and it isn’t inexpensive. I have done some fillers but not enough to really fill the face $$$$$. The doctor suggested fat transfer again but can’t guaranty it will stay

Hello Whiterobin,

Can you tell me about how long it took for the fat to reabsorb?

This very nice lady on here named Miss Orange who had a fat transfer has a great review and she said to drink 1.5 -2 liters of water every day and also to try and gain a few pounds before and after the surgery to keep the fat on your face. I did none of that, hence maybe that is why my result was not so good. I would say to answer your question, that it took about 2-3 months to reabsorb totally. By January I was deflated again. Next time I try it, I will do what Miss Orange said. Her result was amazing.

Hi @whiterobin, thank you for the mention. You were a stunningly beautiful young lady in your photos and like all us ladies over 50 we want to recapture what we were once like. It has taken me 2 years of trial and error to finally rejuvenate my face and yes full face fat graft was an important part of this to plump up a deflated face. Faces deflate from fat loss from reduction of oestrogen post menopause. For fat graft cells to survive a transplant, 2-3 lbs of weight need to be put on. So no dieting post fat transfer. Dehydration can also create sunken eyes so make sure to hydrate every day. I try not to take any selfies until after I have drunk a bottle of water. Choosing a surgeon who is an expert in fat transfer is crucial. Uk plastic surgeons often fly to S Korea to learn how they transfer fat to the face. I found Dr Seo at the Most Valuable Plastic surgery clinic in Seoul. He charges 2.5 million won or $2k for full face fat transfer. Many US surgeons avoid filling the upper lid socket area but this is vital to rejuvenate.

The other thing needing attention is the philtrum, area of skin between the nose and upper lip. This sags and lengthens by a mm every few years so by age 50 can easily be 20 mms long and cover your upper teeth when smiling or opening one's mouth. Dr Mascaro in Florida and Dr Caroline Mills in the uk are the best for bullhorn lip lift in my opinion and both charge around $2,400 and £2400 respectively.

Finally if you have enough funds nose tip rhinoplasty to lift the angle of a drooping nose from aging, can also knock off years.

In my opinion, I think it is possible to rejuvenate and look like you did in your 20s. The only downside is I have the opinionated attitude of a 53 year old but look 23 on the outside so have members of the public treat me like a kid which can be annoying!

My wish and prayers for you @whiterobin is for you to rejuvenate back to that most beautiful young you as we all hate what time does to our faces as I did mine until I took drastic action. xx

P.S. Also consider going blonde as the lighter colour lifts the face. I have been blonde since October and will never go back to brunette. By comparing photos of blonde vs brunette it is clear to see lighter hair colour also rejuvenates the face. xx

I had fat transfer under my eyes 4 months ago. Just recently I noticed swelling under my eyes. Then during the following 2 weeks 3 different people told me my eyes look swollen. Is it possible that the swelling will go down? Anyone have any idea of what is going on?
