Finally Decided to Try Laser Hair Removal - Melbourne, AU

I have always wanted to try laser hair removal but...

$294
I have always wanted to try laser hair removal but it was just too expensive, then I was doing my usual daily beauty browsing online and seen that Australian Laser & Skin clinic had a sale on; for $49 I could get my underarm and Brazilian done. This was a steal but I'm always cautious of these 'to good to be true' offers. So the first thing I wanted to check was what type of machine they used. It was a Candela Gentlelase. From been part of this great community on realself I was able to confirm that this was one of the best machines for laser so I thought why not and booked it.
I had my first session on saturday past and mentally prepared myself for the worst pain ever but I came out shocked at how painless it was. The epilator and waxing is so much more painful. Its a weird sensation which is hard to describe but it felt like someone pinching you whilst putting drops of cold water on you. I was a little concerned about the smell of burning but I was reassured that this meant it was working (I hope so). After my session I had little redness (as you would after a wax) no swelling, itching or any discomfort.
Its been 5 days since the procedure and there is very little hair growth on my underarms but my bikini area has a lot more hairs growing which I'm hoping will fall out. Its early days so I will update you in a week or two.

Lucky you! I just went to my 3rd treatment for full legs and though the pain was nowhere as bad as the first time, because my tech is taking the time to really focus on all the stubborn follicles (she goes more slowly and thoroughly now as my tolerance has increased and she promises the results will be better). One thing I do wish is that there was a cooling tip attached to the laser (I think the Candela that's being used on you has one)... because a majority of the pain now is from the increasing heat as she slowly moves up/down the area. Also, I just started a full arms session today, and it went really well (minimal pain) until she offered to get my underarms for me as well - no charge. The right underarm hurt like hell, but no lasting pain. But she ended up slightly burning my left underarm as I had a blister and some pain. Wonder if it could have been avoided if there was a way to stop the freaken machine from overheating my skin!
And good luck on your treatments! She also did a little bit of my bikini line today (again, no charge because she loves seeing me enthuse over the results) but it hurt so bad! I can't imagine getting a brazilian and probably won't at this place.

oh, forgot to add that the place uses MedioStart Next (which I think is to help people with darker skin tones; I am skin type IV )... I really am loving the results on my legs because just in two treatments, my hair reduction was so great!!!

Hi Gracie. Yes mine is the Candela machine so that maybe the reason as I felt no heat at all and afterwards just felt like it would after a wax. I am very fair skin, dark hair so I'm the ideal candidate.

Hey congrats on the laser hair removal. You won't regret it :) I've had many parts done.. Including my underarms. Don't worry about the "growth" you see in your bikini area.. Or underarms for that matter. What you're seeing is not growth at all. It's basically "shedding".. The active growth hairs which can be up to 5mm deep have been destroyed at the root.. In about 2 weeks.. You will notice that will simply start falling out.. (if u pull them they will come out with no resistance).. In about 3 weeks.. You will be almost bare.. And then stay that way for close to 6 weeks.. At this time.. The hairs that were not destroyed will start to grow back. :)
The laser can only destroy hairs in the active growing phase.. Which is about 20% of the hairs at any given time. That's why u need to space the treatments out appropriately and go for about 8 sessions to ultimately achieve 95% + permanent hair reduction in the area :)
Look at my write up that I did regarding my miradry procedure (under arm treatment for sweat).. You will see plenty of pics of my underarms lol... This is the result of about 10 treatments of laser hair removal over about 2 years :)
So watch over the next couple weeks.. And marvel how the hairs all miraculously start falling out leaving you beautifully bare :) it's the greatest thing ever invented. Pm me if u have any specific questions I have a lot of experience with laser hair removal :)

Thanks connor thats great to know. :) My underarm hair seems to be falling out in places but a lot go hair hair grown back on my bikini but I think this is due to not waiting the 4-6 weeks before the first treatment. I only waited three weeks so it will be interesting to see how much hair I lose in the bikini area in the next session.

Yes.. Don't get discouraged it works! But u will. Need a few sessions before all of a sudden you can say omg.. There's really a lot less coming back lol.
I wish I'd taken photos about 8 weeks after each treatment of my umm.... "bikini area" (if that's the right term for a guy ha ha) so you could see the progressive reduction.
What do u mean about waiting 4 to 6 weeks before your first treatment though? Did u tweeze or wax a few weeks before getting your first treatment like?
May 24, 2015
I had waxed three weeks before the treatment so that is probably why I have less hairs falling out.
May 24, 2015
Yes absolutely that's why :) don't do any more waxing or tweezing now that you've started laser. U want the roots in place so u get maximum benefit of the laser energy.
Also I saw your comment about the white hairs.. Most of us have some what hairs but we don't always notice them.. But the laser targets the melanin in your hair (the Dark color).. So after a treatment you may see more white hairs simply because they're more noticeable as a result of there being way less dark hairs now.
The laser will not have any effect on the white hairs.. As they contain no melanin..
If they really bother u.. U can go for an electrolysis appt to clean up the white hairs.. I did that with a few on my chest.. I waited till most of the black hair fell out after a laser treatment and then had electrolysis done on the few white ones :)
May 25, 2015
Ha ha omg thats just what I told myself. It sucks!!!
The more u get treated when they're still Dark the better cause the laser will do em. Otherwise.. Electrolysis is ur only option once they turn grey/white.
I know my chest had about 25 lol... Thought I'd better nuke em while they still black before that number turned to 100 lol

Would love to keep updates as I live in Victoria and would happily travel to Melbourne if a place is recommended.

White hairs starting to show
Miss MariaMay 24, 2015
3 weeks after first session: I have noticed some of my hairs are growing back white! I have never had white hairs even on my head so obviously laser is causing this. Has anyone else had this happen to them? I'm hoping these hairs will eventually fall out otherwise this is really not a good look.

That's interesting, actually I have noticed this happening with the epliator as well. You should post a question to the doctors, it would be interesting to know why this may be happening, here is a link for you.

I've had the same result with a lot more white hairs than before the laser...especially on the scrotum...

Update 3 down 3 more to go!
Miss MariaSeptember 17, 2015
Sorry for the delay in the update. It's been 3 weeks since by third session and I definitely notice a huge difference especially in the bikini area. The armpit is moving a lot more slowly but I have been told this maybe due to applying tan to the skin which would make sense as to why one area is moving along a lot faster than the other.
The hairs are falling out bit by bit and I am starting to notice bald patches in areas which is great as it means it is working. As always there is minimal pain but then again I think it maybe due to your tolerance or the area, as my friend has also started laser in the same clinic and finds it quite painful on her legs which is interesting. She is a lot fairer than me so unsure if this is a contributing factor.
I have to say the girls who work there are great, especially Jackie. I never stopped laughing from the moment I arrived until I left. It was the most fun, painless session yet. She certainly knows how to distract you. If your from Melbourne then Australian laser and skin is definitely the place to go.
I hope this helps and I promise to update you soon after my fourth session. :)

Welcome, I am so glad that you shared your experience with us. I would have been afraid of the pain too, glad it wasn't bad. You are one step ahead of me, I am still using the epilator, but I can't bring myself to use it anywhere else other than my arms and legs...I attempted my under arms, but just one touch and it hurt to much. How did you manage the pain? What other areas of your body did you use the epilator on? I look forward to following your progress with your laser removal, I am so tempted to start treatment! Keep us posted. :)
Ok, so after a shower - I will try that. I wonder if I iced the area if that would help...hmmmm.
Keep up posted on your next steps. :)
