My melasma started when I first moved to Australia...

My melasma started when I first moved to Australia. I think a combination of being on the birth control pill and also not using as much sun protection as I should have, I got some melasma patches under my eyes. I hated leaving the house or seeing anyone I knew without foundation. The defining moment to make a change about it was when I went on vacation in Hawaii and one of my melasma patches lost pigmentation so I had a white circle under my eye that was really noticeable in contrast to the darker pigmented areas. I broke down in tears in front of my boyfriend when I googled and found out that I would never get this pigmentation back. My only hope was to reduce the darker pigmentation around it.

I had spent hundreds on serums and creams at Sephora and researched IPL. I'm so happy the lady refused me because she was scared it might make my patches darker. Months later I went to a highly rated skin clinic in my city and they told me about cosmelan.. it sounded almost too good to be true to begin with but when I googled the results and read some reviews on here I thought I'd give it a try.

The mask was applied by the technician, and she explained absolutely everything about the aftercare process and presented me with my package of products- sunscreen, masks, moisturizer, and of course my trusty bottle of cosmelan 2. This was all included with the price and I was impressed with the amount of product I received! I was immediately red after I took the mask off after the nine hour mark which was best suited to my fair skin. The next morning, my face felt red and tight, almost as if it were a half size too small. I could already notice that the pigmented areas that concerned me most under my eyes were hardly visible anymore… even at this stage!

From the third day onwards I started snake mode and my face was peeling away in patches. It was incredibly itchy for a day or two and this was very uncomfortable to deal with. I was also told not to scratch as this could result in further pigmentation, so I cut my nails and learned that tapping the itches was a safer way to satisfy my urges. What was the most painful, however, was when I washed my face and re-applied the skin care products. Because these products still continue the de-pigmentation process, they were exceptionally painful on my fresh skin and burned intensely for a minute or two after applying. My skin technician assured me this was totally normal and advised me to no matter what to continue using the products, as my skin needed to get used to it in order to get better.

I was lucky to be able to work from home, otherwise I could imagine this treatment might be troubling and embarrassing. I had the treatment on a Saturday and felt slightly comfortable enough to leave the house for the first time on Thursday night. I was self conscious going back into work on the Monday and stayed at home again the next day due to the dryness around my mouth. I think this was the worst part as the aftercare products just accentuate any dryness and you need to constantly apply your hydra K factor moisturizer to keep these areas as moist as possible.

The redness and dryness lasted for a good week and a half. My face remained extremely dry around my mouth and I even had some breakouts afterwards. I even got those nasty cracks at the side of my mouth from being so dry (and probably not talking since I was pretty anti-social during this time). However, two weeks later and my skin is looking INCREDIBLE. I have gotten so many compliments from coworkers, friends and even my dad who used the term “even skintone” I think for the first time in his life (and without my encouragement). I don’t even need to wear foundation to work anymore and all of my pigmented areas are completely gone. I feel amazing and confident and I’m so so pleased with the results. If you have this ability to work from home or just a lot of annual leave I highly highly recommend this treatment and am so pleased with the results!

My skin technician Alice who is trained in cosmelan was an absolute legend (I highly recommend Instant Laser Clinic in Kew if you're in Melbourne) and she even gave me her mobile number to contact in case I had any questions. She got back to me at 9pm on a Saturday and I was just so impressed with that level of customer service. They even gave me a 20 min complimentary LED light treatment a week after my appointment to soothe my skin and extra hydrating masks for when my skin was getting dry.
