I recently finished Invisalign and my original orthodontist recommended I have laser gum contouring after my treatment to lengthen my teeth and even out my gum line. She specialized in laser gum contouring. Unfortunately she ended up selling her practice before I finished Invisalign. I ended up going to my dentist for the gum contouring. He seemed a bit reluctant about contouring all across my top teeth. Apparently I have only a few millimeters of gum to work with due to a low bone. He was concerned about exposing any roots. Instead he recommended I get 6 veneers for $9000. I didn't want veneers nor did I have $9k to fork over after just paying $8k for my Invisalign. I consulted my new orthodontist and he recommended getting the gum contouring on only two teeth where my gum line was the lowest. I was bummed because the original plan was to reduce the appearance of a gummy smile. But I went back to my dentist and he contoured my gum line above teeth #7 and #9. They numb the area first so you can't feel the laser but you can smell the burning gum tissue. My dentist removed a only a minimal amount. I didn't have any pain during or after the procedure, only a little tenderness the first hour the anesthetic wore off. My gums healed fast in just a few days. But the arch of the gum turned out too pointy so my dentist did a second session to round out the shape of how the gum frames the tooth. Then a third session was needed because the gum line over my two front teeth was still uneven. I'll post before and after pics. Also between the gum contouring sessions my dentist was doing a crown on #9 and veneer on #8 to match. Now that my gums are healed and the crown and veneer are done, I feel my smile is still too gummy and my gum line is uneven. I think the gum contouring was too conservative and only being done on 2 or 3 teeth wasn't enough to make a difference. I'm moving in a few days, so now I'll probably have to start all over again and have everything redone. Pretty bummed out about the whole situation.

Hi! Congrats on your new smile. I had a gum surgery done too but I did my complete upper. It was worth it for me because mine was really gummy. I wore braces and it was horrible since I seemed to have more gums than teeth. I think your teeth looks ok. The two front teeth have a slightly different color from the rest but overall it looks good. What kind of veneers do you have? I’m getting mine done in June —$15,800. I’ll get porcelain veneers. All the best!

Uneven Gums After Gum Contouring

I thought I'd give it some time and see how my gums would adjust on their own after healing. It's been a month since my 3rd laser gum contouring touch-up session. Sadly the results are not what I envisioned. My gums are still uneven and my gummy smile is basically the same as before treatment. I wish I'd saved my money. This whole experience has been an emotional roller coaster.
