Where to begin?! I went from just wanting a breast augmentation a year after my now 7 year old was born to after years of being my ideal weight and having a pooch, I'd have to plan every single outfit around, to realizing I needed a tummy tuck too.

I found and scheduled with another doctor almost two years ago just for a breast aug. When I went back to him, I told him I wanted a mini-tt and long story short I got freaked out about drains and started looking for a solution. Cue the trumpets :-)

I found Dr. Luis Macias of the Marina Plastic Surgery Associates. They specialize in the no drain tummy tuck. I scheduled my complimentary consultation, met with Dr. Macias, and scheduled a date for a mommy makeover with a breast aug and a full tt. It freaked me out that he suggested a full but after him taking the time to explain why and show pics of past patients, I understood and never really questioned it. The scar was my mental obstacle, but even that I am no longer concerned with. He explained scar therapy is a wonderful thing now available. I had loose skin over my belly button and a hernia. To get the washboard results I wanted, I trusted he could give them to me.

Anyway, we decided on 431cc Sientra moderate(I believe), a full tt, umbilical hernia repair, and a bit of liposuction to be sure I had no fat overhanging my incision.

Surgery went great. Really. They do so much prep and everyone is so nice and sweet, I wasn't even nervous. Two biggest issues I had was being super cold waking up on the operating table and the recovery center not having an ambulance type car to ride in to their facilities. Dr. Macias insists on at least one night at the recovery center. I ended up staying two. My mom wasn't ready for me to come home after one night and I have to agree, my body was not ready for the move out of their special bed.

All in all, my recovery is going very well. NO DRAINS TT is absolutely the way to go! I contacted another one of Dr. Macia's patients on RealSelf and she convinced me and held my hand through any questions I ever had leading up to my surgery. She told me to trust Dr. Macias and I did. He is confident, patient, honest, caring, genuine, and smart.

I do not even obsess in the mirror at all during my recovery right now. I trust that everything is going to look just how it should when it's supposed to and I know that's because of the confidence I have in Dr. Macias. I feel lucky to have found him on RealSelf and I'm sure I won't be able to afford him in couple of years once people realize his skills!

Oh and another thing I forgot to mention, probably because I was loaded on meds at the time ;-), but at the recovery center, all the nurses were raving about Dr. Macias. My nurse said 5 of them had procedures done with him because out of all the doctor's patients they see, he is the one for body because he really understands a woman's curves. I thought that was pretty cool since every top doc sends their patients to that center! Like I said, I truly feel lucky :-)

I'm so glad you were able to talk with someone who used your Dr before. That always helps. You know exactly what to expect during recovery. Can you explain how the no drains TT works? Is there an opening that allows the fluid to be relieved? Or does he do something to make sure your body doesn't hold fluid?

Below is copied and pasted from my Doctor's Practice Website. Link: http://www.marinaplasticsurgery.com/plastic-surgery/body-procedures-los-angeles/no-drain-tummy-tuck/ No-Drain Tummy Tucks – less pain, less anxiety, better results! Surgical drains are a feared part of abdominplasty surgery for many patients. They are awkward, irritating and uncomfortable. The tubes and collection devices make walking, dressing, and showering more difficult. This can translate into a longer recovery period. Patients worry about the pain that can be associated with pulling the drainage tubes out. Drains are commonly used in surgery to prevent fluid from accumulating between tissue planes. In tummy tuck surgery, there is a space between the abdominal wall and the overlying fat and skin (the abdominal “flap”). If nothing is done to close this space, the body will do what it normally does during the healing process – produce fluid. Since there is nothing to restrict the fluid from accumulating, a seroma can form in this space. Basically, the tissue produces fluid faster than it can reabsorb. Plastic surgeons place negative suction drains in spaces like this to both remove the fluid and create suction between the tissue planes. However – there is a way to eliminate this space without using uncomfortable drainage tubes. Doctors Stevens, Spring and Macias utilize progressive tension sutures inside the tissues to close off the space and also relieve tension on the final surgical closure. This translates into less pain, less discomfort, no drains to deal with, and better scarring from less tension. Also, there is no opening from the outside world into the tissues, potentially minimizing infection risk. We have successfully used progressive tension sutures during abdominoplasty instead of surgical drains for more than 6 years, with a lower seroma rate than is commonly thought to occur with tummy tucks and drains. “The seroma rate I have experienced using this method is almost zero. I don’t worry about seromas anymore, and my patients don’t worry about drains. I am very happy with this technique and my patients are so grateful that they do not have to experience drainage tubes after tummy tuck surgery”, says Dr. Michelle Spring. Hope this helps explain it! xo
