Very Disappointed with Rhinoplasty Result - Miss Piggy Nose :( - Malvern, AU

I had a rhinoplasty/septoplasty with Dr Southwick...

I had a rhinoplasty/septoplasty with Dr Southwick about 2.5 years ago. I was looking for a more refined, feminine result but unfortunately I've ended up with a crooked, Miss Piggy-esque look, visible scar and I now have trouble breathing, which I never had before. I'm not really one to write reviews but I decided to after all this time because I've started looking into revision surgery lately and I made my choice of doctor based on all the excellent reviews I found online for Dr Southwick so I know how important it is for us to all be honest and share our experiences, especially when things don't go as we would have liked. I really, really liked Dr Southwick and I think that's why I booked my surgery after meeting with him but I really wish I consulted with another surgeon or two before making my decision because if I had I might not be looking at revision now. I've been back to Dr Southwick to discuss my concerns but he didn't see a problem and suggested I not focus on my nose. This is a simplification of our conversation - he is a very nice man with a good bedside manner - but the overarching message was that my concerns weren't cause for alarm. I've waited over two years before even thinking about revision to see how my nose settled but I now know it won't drop any further and the result I have now is what I'm stuck with and it's not acceptable for me. I strongly recommend that anyone getting any surgery meet with several doctors, even those that charge consult fees, or even better, try to get a recommendation from a friend or go to someone who's work you've seen. It's quite heartbreaking when things go wrong, not to mention costly. As a side note, I also found one particularly staff member very rude - that is the staff member I have given one star for below.

From the pictures, it looks nice. Maybe not the one looking up at the bottom but, that's never a good look. ;)

Thank you for your nice words. Yep bottom angle never great but was just to show the scar.
April 22, 2016
Your nose looks nice and natural I wouldn't touch it !

Thank you for your kind comment, I've heard only not so nice one's in person :( It's definitely not the worst rhinoplasty ever, just not what I expected in that it's upturned and not straight. I'm currently getting filler to straighten it out and push it down a bit and I may just stick with that as it's scary to think of going through it all again.
April 22, 2016
I definitely would not get a filler. It can do so much damage to your nose which they don't tell you about. First of all it never really goes away and with time wil become wonky and patchy or even worse if they put a drop too much it can collapse your entire nose structure and u will develop severe breathing problems.
April 22, 2016
Really!? I've never heard that before... Did a surgeon tell you that?
April 22, 2016
It happened to me . I have. Ow had 2 surgeries trying to repair my nasal valve which has collapsed.
April 22, 2016
Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry that happened to you, that's horrible! I will take your advice on board
April 22, 2016
You described completely different nose - it looks nice on pictures. But these pics aren't good quality, so this may be the reason why I can see problems you described.
April 22, 2016
Thank you izamagda, I appreciate you saying it looks nice. You're right, the pics aren't great quality and it's not very clear when you can't see in the context of my whole face. I will post another pic that might show what I'm talking about a little better...
April 22, 2016
Yes, this would be helpful. I had my rhinoplasty almost 3 months ago, and also don't like the way the scar healed, my tip is swollen on one side and other side has very visible dent like the cartilage is missing... The bridge also still has a hump that was supposed to be removed. The doctor I choose is very highly regarded in uk, and my friend had rhino done with him - she looks great. I'm praying that in a few months my nose will change... I didn't realise how common complications after rhino are, you always think that your result will be good:/
April 22, 2016
You couldn't have said it better - we all think ours will go well so it's a shock when it doesn't meet expectations. I'm so sorry to hear you're not happy with your results, I know exactly how you feel. Do you have images? Have you had a chance to discuss your concerns with your surgeon?
April 22, 2016
Yes, I saw him around 3 weeks after the procedure and he seems really confident that this is only swelling. He said there is nothing that concerns him at this point. He'll see me 6 months post op and then we can discuss the result and possibly use steroid injection or filler, if needed. I'm going to wait and see, trying to stay positive. :)
April 22, 2016
Sounds like you have a good and appropriate plan. Although I'm not overly happy with my final result and I can reassure you that my nose at 3 months looked completely different to what it does now. At three months I had a lot of swelling and I can really see that now looking back on photos. I'll PM them to you if you think seeing them will reassure you? I uploaded another pic of myself - does that better demonstrate my concerns?
April 22, 2016
Yes please, it would be great.:-) It will give me hope that my nose can change too :-) it's so hard to find this kind of photos online, people add either photos with great or bad results - I know because I used to obsessively search for them!;) I saw the other picture you added and it's much better, definitely shows that your nose is upturned. Did you have hump removed? I've read that all noses are upturned after removing the cast and they drop with time, but my nose wasn't so I'm hoping it won't drop even more...
April 22, 2016
Totally understand, I'll send you some pics during the swelling phase so you can see how mine progressed. I did have a small hump removed and I think you're right in that the removal of the hump is what's left me upturned. If I knew removing the hump would leave me upturned I wouldn't have gone ahead with the procedure because that was a look I definitely wanted to avoid. My nose has dropped a little from when it was swollen but it really hasn't dropped much, maybe a millimetre or two? I wouldn't worry about that too much if I was you. Personally I found my nose got smaller and smaller up to the two year mark and then stopped.
April 23, 2016
Wow, this really took ages. Thank you for the photos you sent me. You are really helpful.:-)
April 22, 2016
I can see your concerns but luckily it doesn't look bad...what did your nose look like before if I may ask? Was this a drastic change for you or a subtle one?
April 22, 2016
Thank you gingerjade. No it's not terrible just not what I was expecting. No not a huge change but yes a small hump was removed. I will post a before so you can see the difference.
April 26, 2016
thanks for the honest review. I was considering to see him for a revision but was unsure. Your review has helped me to see that the surgeons in Australia just dont have what it takes it seems unfortunately.
Im so sorry that you have to go through the emotional rollercoaster. Its so draining on your life. Wish you the very best in the future

Hi E.m.k, I've just read your story and I'm so sorry to hear what happened to you. I completely understand how you feel. Like you, I didn't feel that comfortable posting my surgeons name but I decided to in the hope to help someone else and your comment has made it worthwhile. If I can help one person from my experience then at least my disappointment won't be completely in vein.

Thank you for posting your story,my daughter had a similar thing happen to her and we didn't want to post the surgeons name, but in the end we did. Like you, she hoped it would help someone else. She still lives with the scars of a surgeons incompetence and unfortunately there is not much that can be done. Like you said; it is not only the emotional but financial costs of ongoing revisions. I think it is important and so valuable to others considering surgery, because it makes everyone take stock and think again, because plastic surgery comes with risks, even from the best surgeons. I do hope you both find good surgeons who can help you with your revisions. Thank you again

I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to your daughter. You're absolutely right - even the best can have bad days like we all can. It's a big risk when you really weigh it up. Wishing your daughter all the best for whatever she decides.
