I Wish Insurance Covered This Because Diastasis Recti is a REAL Medical Issue!
WORTH IT$9,500
I am 5 months post op from abdominoplasty/tummy tuck surgery to repair a severe diastasis recti (DR). I have 4 kids and after baby 3 my belly didn't *quite* go back like it did with 1 and 2. But after baby 4, my body was destroyed. I did see a physical therapist for it but saw almost no improvement other than what I believe was just the general improvement that happens anyway with time passing. I had daily lower back and hip pain from DR - some days it was so bad I couldn't walk, constant abdominal pain, intestinal issues - random nausea, bloating, problems going #2 (I often physically used my hands to hold my ab muscles together so that my intestines weren't pushing out while going to the bathroom), I couldn't hold my baby without pain, I couldn't lift heavy things, I couldn't exercise like I used to, I was super depressed from all the daily pain and inability to function properly.
Diastasis recti is a seriously unrecognized medical condition that causes significant problems for many women and I hate that the medical and insurance fields just discount it like it's something that is all in our heads and there isn't research to prove that all these issues come from DR and the mom pooch is just part of having kids (I could go on, but you get the idea)... And insurance considers the surgery to correct it completely cosmetic. Well that's BS and I'm here to tell you that EVERY SINGLE ONE of my medical/health problems I was suffering from due to DR have been resolved by having it surgically fixed.
I submitted to insurance and appealed when I was denied and I didn't win in the end but it's still worth it even though I paid for it out of pocket. This is a life-changing surgery and I can't begin to express how happy I am to be able to function like a normal person again, live my life without pain, pick up my child without pain, and exercise again!
I definitely needed help (and was thankful for my husband, mom and mom-in-law for providing it!) for a few weeks after surgery, and it can seem like a long recovery when you are in the thick of it but looking back it was a small price to pay for a functioning body again.

Well said, I agree with you on this one. I am in constant pain. back, hips and lower abdominal pain and everybody always thinks I am tripping. but it's real. I thought for a long time I was the only one who felt like that. Insurance companies also know its a health issue because they pay only if you are obese and literally dying from it. why do we got to let it get that bad before somebody decides to help.

Yes!!! I had a hernia repair without diastasis repair and I’m so scared of it coming back. Only specialist hernia surgeons and some plastic surgeons accept/acknowledge the connection. I live with ice packs for my pubic area and heat packs for my lower back due to pain from dr. My separation I am told is relatively small (up to 3 cm) and I do physio to try and help it but it’s not doing much.

You are the first person I have seen with a diastasis as bad as mine! I am 2 weeks post op and couldn't agree more about this needing to be considered a medical procedure and not purely cosmetic. We too are trying to submit to insurance simply to make a statement. Maybe someday.

You are right. 4 months post OP, and I feel so free. I am able to run, exercise and and not so weak and breathless all the time. My blood sugar levels are doing so much better, and my health has improved dramatically.

Thanks so much for your detailed review and congratulations on your results! It's great to hear about the reduction in pain you had.
