It seems like everyone does breast augmentation these days. Surely it's only a matter of time before my neighborhood nail salon offers the procedure. I expect it will be listed on their tri-fold menu, just below waxing and facials, and inevitably entitled: BOOBS. Between such widespread availability and those surgeons who think only in terms of cantaloupes, what's not to be worried about when considering an upgrade? Like most trans women, I'm not shy about surgery, but I chose to delay breast augmentation for five years because I couldn't find a surgeon who reliably achieved natural results. I consulted with countless specialists, none of whom seemed to understand that I prioritized proportion, not size. I reviewed examples of their work, presumably their best, and always left thinking that I'd rather proceed with my half A cups and padded bras. Last summer I came across a short editorial on Dr. Teitelbaum's philosophy. Finally, I thought, someone with class, a sense of proportion. Someone who knows the value of restraint and the faults of excess. That same day I contacted his office, scheduled a consultation, and booked a flight to Los Angeles. Since transitioning I've had no less than eight surgeries, an embarrassing number of non-surgical procedures, and more consultations than I care to remember. All of my doctors are leading experts in their fields, and most are based in California or New York. Dr. Teitelbaum stands out as the very best. His work speaks for itself, but there are a few things I would like to add: Rather than being fixated on a particular cup size or volume, consider letting him guide the process. I asked him to pick the implants that fit my body, and the results far exceeded my expectations. People are genuinely baffled at how natural my breasts appear at only 6 months out — almost all being unaware that implants could look so good. Several have remarked: "Where did you find this guy?" While Dr. Teitelbaum's results get most of the attention, his staff is also exceedingly professional and thorough. In some ways the office is more reminiscent of a Manhattan law firm than a Santa Monica surgical practice. Everything is streamlined, utterly efficient, no point is overlooked. One gets the sense that they have done this — a lot — and that you are quite literally in the best of hands. I was also relieved to discover that Dr. Teitelbaum is fluent in transgender terminology, and never for a moment did I feel awkward or that my presence was in any way uncomfortable for him or his staff. It can be very unsettling to feel otherwise, and any trans person reading this will know exactly what I mean. I went to surgery feeling as though I was valued just as much as any other patient. If you have high standards, value expert techniques, and want a truly natural look, you really should consult with Dr. Teitelbaum before moving forward with breast augmentation.
