Surprised at Positive Results from Derma Roller 1.0. Los Angeles, CA

I've spent way too much money on lasers, peels and...

Good face gone bad
WORTH IT$20
I've spent way too much money on lasers, peels and products - in many cases I've had things done to undo damage caused by an expensive procedure. It becomes downward spiral! When I first heard about Derma Rollers I thought, "Ouch" and "That can't really work." It sounded like a strange idea and I was frankly - a little scared. I had a z-plasty done on an old Birthmark removal scar near my eye. I then had eMatrix done - which left a very pronounced square grid imprint on top of the scar. It is still there, but less obvious after 3 years. I then had IPL to remove all the redness. When the redness was gone - it became obvious that the scar was hypo-pigmented from so much trauma.

My plastic surgeon had mentioned going to someone for Fraxel treatments to see if it could improve the situation. We even discussed going to a medical tattoo artist to make the scar the same color as my skin. I decided that I'd had enough and would wait it out. One day he said, why don't you try this, "Get a Derma Roller and apply Latisse after." For those of you familiar with Latisse - it does cause change in pigmentation which is why you will see a purplish line over time where it's applied on the eye line.

I ordered a 1.0 for $20 and started using it. It was a little uncomfortable at first, but now it's not. Great news. I have noticed improvement 4 months out. I don't even apply Latisse most of the time because I'm lazy about it. However, that grid mark has faded and there is a little more color. I'm genuinely surprised and am starting to use it on other pock marks resulting from eMatrix/IPL "zaps". I have not noticed an improvement in color on those; though, I have noticed that they appear a little smoother.

The key with ALL of these procedures and products is less is more. Start small and see how things work out. You can safely use a 1.5, but DON'T OVERDO it. I wish I'd started using the Derma Roller in conjunction with light peels (when skin is healed)before I ever laid eyes on any laser or "laser-like" product. Good luck.

What kind of light peels did you have done? (when the skin was healed).

I do 20% glycolic peel pads (Dermalogic Cosmetic Laboratories) at home in between derma rolling. I do Vitalize Peels at the derm's office every 4 to 6 months. Before I did the damage by being too aggressive with the Active FX, eMatrix and IPLs - I had done TCA/Jessner Peels at the derm's office about 5 times a year and my skin was amazing for years. That derm told me to avoid the laser/laser-like stuff and I didn't. The result was thinner skin (not collagen building), a lot more hyper-pigmentation/malasma, some hypo-pigmentation, and scars. Keep in mind that when I derma-roll, my goal is not to bleed. I don't want to cause more injury. I get temporarily red - less is more in the long term based on my experience.

Hi, i have the 1.0 roller. I've been doing weekly low % peels. You do both? What schedule would you suggest for using the roller and the peels? How do you space them? Thanks

Well - I am a little sporadic and I don't know what doctors recommend - so take this with a grain of salt because I think that derma rolling can vary in aggressiveness and pressure applied. I try to pay attention to how my skin is responding and back off accordingly on peels or rolling - I.e. I look really red. I'd say I do up to every other week of one or the other.

I asked a doctor who works with a lot of laser damaged patients recently if Dermaroller worked and his answer was no it won't do anything. But the more I read the more it sounds like it does work and can make a difference. So thank you for posting this.

It won't create miracles; however, it's non-invasive and inexpensive! In other words, for $20 it can't hurt if you are patient and have realistic expectations.

I had a dermaroller 1.5 test spot done a couple weeks ago and I do believe I see some improvement in the spot. I'm also dealing with grid marks and half circle scars on my cheek from a VBeam laser. Haven't come up with a good excuse for them yet. I'm too embarrassed to say I paid someone to do that to me. Any suggestions on how to treat those Good face ?

Hi Cjjr, Did u use the dermaroller on yourself or went to practitioner? Was it painful?

Hi birdland. I go to an esthetician in Chicago who's been trained to use it. He told me he's had fantastic results with it. He's using a 1.5mm on my face. It does hurt. But nothing you can't handle. I'm going for my third Dermaroller in a week. I've read that it can take many months to see results as the skin slowly rebuilds itself. I do think I see improvement. As Good face said, it won't create miracles, but I believe it has helped. I'll take what I can get. It only took the laser about 10 minutes to cause damage. Now that's what I call results sadly. I'll post my results here. Take care.

How often & how many sessions? Has it caused any hyperpigmentation? I'd like to try micro needling but I'm nervous about hyperpigmentation. I may purchase one of the pens. I read its better than rolling. I found these videos very informative https://www.youtube.com/user/whitelotusantiaging/videos

Is the esthetician applying any serum? Is so can u ask if the serum has any retinoid in it and what's in the serum? I read retinoid should not be used but I saw a video where a dr said retin a was part of the serum. I'm trying to correct damage to my skin from retinoids. I resent the hype that derms create about retinoid. After my experience and the behavior of a lot of dr I'm afraid to have anyone treat me.

I just started Dermaroller yesterday at an Esthetician in Downtown Chicago. He's been trained on it and says he's been doing it for 3 years. He told me that he has had fantastic results with it. Especially for acne scarring. He's very genuine and very highly rated. He said he's Rolling a girl now who had her face badly hyperpigmented by one of the top laser "doctors" in LA. Says it looked like she had a moustache. But the Dermarolling is helping and most of her hyperpigmentation is gone now. But it takes time and he's talking 4-6 sessions for me. I can honestly say hat I believ I do see improvement in the scarring. I'm going to continue with it and I'll keep everyone updated on the results. Happy Holidays
