I have what I believe to be hormonal acne. It can be cystic on occasions but mostly inflamed and clogged pores. I am a female with light complextion and brown hair. Usually have between 5-8 breakouts if I do not take antibiotics or the pill. Wanting to stay away from those prescription medications, I started LED light treatments. Combination of red and blue light, 25 minute sessions. The jury is still out, I've had 5 sessions so far and I cannot see any change whatsoever in my skin. Most guidelines say that you can clearly see results in 4-6 sessions. The light has had ZERO effect on my acne, will continue monitoring this and reporting as more sessions are conducted. As for the other claims about LED such as pore/wrinkle reduction, skin tightening, acne scarring improvement I would say the results are not there either. Immediately post the light treatment your skin has a glow which fades within about 2 hours. It does not correct any of the other issues. Will continue to post more updates as I have 10 sessions to go.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Does it cause peeling?

Not at all. No skin irritation of any kind, at least not for me.

I have to add a small update. I wish I would have done this years ago. You keep reading that if you have acne in your 30s it's hormonal, but no dermatologist will send you to get your hormone levels checked. Instead they prescribe antibiotics and all kinds of topical medications. Well, come to find out, I had my hormone levels tested by an endocrinologist and my testosterone was well above the normal range for a woman. I was shocked...had no idea that was the issue all along! No other symptoms-no abnormal hair growth, voice changes, or anything that you always hear about women with high testosterone. I have since gotten my testosterone level back to normal and you won't believe it...ALL of my acne is gone. No creams, no drugs, nothing! No more cystic breakouts. I guess I'm sharing this because if there is no family history of acne in your family past teens, then please check your hormone levels. I never suspected this could be issue and was happy and relieved once it was fixed.

Is it hard to find the right hormone level? What kind of hormone modification did you your doctor recommend for you? How long did it take to make a difference with your acne? Nice news! I have been considering checking my hormones, but just thought it would be tricky.

I'd also be interested in what they prescribed you - I've had the same issues for 3-4 years now and no one has been able to get rid of it (dermatologist, OB/GYN, facialist). My facialist recently recommended LED treatments which is how I found this post as I was skeptical. The only thing that's helped slightly is Spironolactone which is meant to regulate high testosterone levels but I still get horrible breakouts so would be curious what you've found that works.

How did you get your testosterone level back to normal? What did you take for that?
