I first went to see Mr Greg O' Toole in July...

I first went to see Mr Greg O' Toole in July 2016, with regard to a prominent right ear correction. Almost 3 months to the day later I had my earstitch procedure on 24/10/2016 and I can honestly say I would highly recommend both him and earstitch. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made, my only regret, that it wasn't available 20 years ago when I was a teenager!

Since the age of 13, I first became hugely self conscious and increasingly aware that my right ear was much more prominent than my left. For the next 20 years it really, really bothered me, I covered that ear with my hair at all times, avoided photos and was desperate to have otoplasty. What may have seemed trivial to most hugely affected my confidence, already being self conscious of how I looked anyway, the ear was the one thing I could try to improve! However , being very squeamish and a wimp when it comes to pain the "old style" method and need for a GA horrified me. Quite by chance, I came across an article in a newspaper about the new pioneering earfold method, with Norbert Kang . I was instantly intrigued and fascinated and immediately searched this procedure online, doing a huge amount of reading and research having never heard of it before. The minimalistic approach with a rapid return to work etc really appealed to me so in May 2015 I tentatively emailed Mr O' Toole's team but at that stage was just too nervous and hesitant to take it any further. I spent the next year or so continuing to read countless patient reviews and thought it sounded everything I had ever hoped for and more.... I knew deep down I still desperately wanted this done and would always regret it if I never proceeded further, so in July I emailed again and booked my initial consultation, knowing that if I didn't do it now I never would.

The hardest part for me and the biggest step to take was this initial consultation, I wondered "what was I thinking?!", I was so unsure, nervous and uncertain of what to expect, having never had any procedure or surgery before. On the day I was so nervous I could hardly speak! Mr O' Toole straight away put me at ease, was very welcoming, friendly and approachable, almost instantly my anxiety disappeared and although I felt embarrassed and reluctant to show him my ear, he understood it is a sensitive subject and nothing to be self conscious about. He carefully explained exactly what both earfold and earstitch involved, clearly stating what can and cannot be achieved by each method, and made it very clear the risks of possible post op complications, the expected recovery time, chances of recurrence and the cost. He also fully answered my questions then asked me what I would like my ear to look like, and got me to show him in a mirror, he listened to how I felt, valuing my opinion and expectations. I personally wasn't keen on the earfold , preferring instead the idea of the stitch method, to which Mr O' Toole agreed but said we could try on an earfold anyway just to see what result it would have for me, it overcorrected my ear confirming the stitch would work best. Mr O' Toole showed and talked me through a "touch surgery" computer generated simulation, which was absolutely brilliant in showing me exactly how this surgery works , this was extremely useful to me, helping me to understand the procedure fully to get a realistic idea of what it involved surgically. I walked out elated, impressed by everything I had heard and so glad that I went, any doubts I had earlier had faded away , and he had installed confidence in what he could offer- I knew now for certain this was a realistic option to me.

I was advised to go and spend time thinking carefully about this decision, and a week later decided I definitely wanted to go ahead, so it was booked for October- it was available before that but I had to arrange time off work and had the options of the Royal Free Hospital , London or the Platinum Medical Centre, London , I eagerly anticipated the day and couldn't wait to get it done. On the day of surgery, Mr O' Toole again explained clearly and concisely what to expect. Everything went amazingly well, I was actually excited and it was far , far better than I ever imagined, I anticipated it to be a very painful, scary experience but in fact it was very pleasant and strangely enjoyable! This was largely thanks to the fact that during surgery Mr O' Toole remained calm, highly focussed yet still able to put you at ease, along with the fantastic operating theatre team at the Platinum Medical Centre, who very extremely kind, caring, friendly and reassured me hugely by explaining exactly what was happening and why,and what to expect at every step of the procedure, even making me smile! Without their expertise, professionalism and empathy I would have been very fearful and found the surgery far more daunting. All of the nursing staff also provided a wonderful degree of care, courtesy and kindness which again made the whole day so much easier and relaxed, at all times you felt so safe, well cared for and constantly reassured. I found the surgery itself a lot easier than I had expected, I thought I would be extremely nervous but it went really well, I went to the theatre at 11.40 and was back on the day care unit by 12.20, had my head bandage off a few hours later and was able to leave for home just before 3pm.

During and after the procedure I felt no pain, I had prepared myself for weeks if not longer of awful pain!, the local anaesthetic I hardly felt, and there was no pain at all during the procedure, I was just aware of movements, and noises, I experienced what I would describe as throbbing and discomfort rather than pain for around 4 hours the evening of my surgery, it was bearable and 2 paracetomol soon sorted this , there was no further pain at all, by day 4 the swelling and bruising had virtually disappeared and it healed with no issues at all . I had a 3 day post op check up then the stitches were removed 3 weeks post op , which did hurt a little but nothing too bad.

I am delighted and amazed at the improvement and difference, giving me a huge boost already and just being able to walk out the day of the surgery with my hair up for the first time in 20 years felt great!. Mr O' Toole is honest, realistic and makes sure you are fully aware of the chance of recurrence but he ensures you would feel happy and able to return to him which really puts your mind at ease.

Right from my initial enquiry I have also found Mr O' Toole's secretary to be very helpful , polite and made sure it all went very smoothly, emails were replied to promptly, all of my questions were answered and I was kept fully up to date on appointments and all aspects of booking which has made it so easy and straightforward for me which was great!

I don't think I knew what to expect but the whole experience has been a very positive one, and a pleasant surprise just how well it has gone so far, all of my initial fears and worries soon disappeared, I felt sure I had chosen the best surgeon, a very highly skilled, competent and experienced man who cares about the patient and their expectations first and foremost. I was overwhelmed and quite emotional by the amount of kindness, and excellent care I received throughout, I knew I had no reason to be worried and would especially recommend Mr O' Toole and his team if you are very nervous, self conscious or unsure as his gentle yet knowledgeable manner instantly puts you at ease. I am so thankful I saw that article in the paper by chance and found out all about it, I am glad I went for the earstitch option as I preferred this idea rather than earfold, but it is definitely worth comparing and considering both.

I will be forever grateful and thankful to Mr O' Toole and his team for everything they have done for me , I am so impressed with the results so far, after having waited for so long for something I never thought was possible for me it means the world to me that it went so well and is a huge relief to have achieved this at long last!, I definitely made the right choice and without doubt one of the best decisions I have ever made. By choice I still wear a headband overnight and whenever I am not working with others as I feel this holds my ear back further, I do feel without the headband it would have moved out more by now, I am due a review this summer to see if there is any chance to further tighten this ear anymore as I do prefer the very flat look and would ideally like to ditch wearing a headband by day. Overall, I am still thrilled with the result, having literally loathed my ear for so many years I am so , so pleased I had this procedure.

Hi vickiemily! So I've just had the earFold method and I'm really dissatisfied with the result. My ears look little too overcorrected. All I ever wanted was a subtle fold of the upper part of my ear. However the folds have folded it back too much to the point my earlobes stick out a little bit more than the top part! I opted for 2 implants (one in each ear). My doctor hadn't heard of the earStitch method however based on reading your testimonial I think that is what I should have gone for.

I'm really gutted right now. I had high hopes and ended up paying £2150 for the 2 implants. I have an appointment in another week to see the doctor again and if my ears don't look any better I'm going to ask him to take them out. Which is a complete shame and waste.

Do you mind if I ask how much your earStitch surgery costed? I feel like I made the completely wrong choice with my doctor. His bedside manner wasn't great and he seemed to be irritated when I was being pernickety about the placement of my earFold. In hindsight I should have really gone with a specialist like Dr. Greg O'Toole.

Look forward to your reply!

yes of course! I am really sorry to hear that you are unhappy with the result of your earfold, that's a real shame you haven't had what you were hoping for, when I first saw the article in the newspaper it was about the earfold with Norbert Kang at the Royal Free and that's when I starting researching online having never heard about it before and I then came across the earstitch method too and thought I just preferred the sound of that rather than the implants, are you In the UK or abroad if you don't mind me asking? that's a big disappointment for you to have got your hopes up so high and paid a lot of money to have not achieved the result you were after it is a big decision to make plus a lot of money , I spent around 14 months just reading reviews and researching before I was brave enough to finally go for it! in answer to your question I paid £200 for my initial consultation, then £1200 for the surgeons fees then £1200 for the use of the theatre, all follow up appointments, stitch removal etc is included in the price, bear in mind I only had one ear done though, I do hope your review appointment goes well when you go back, and whether you have the implants removed or adjusted I do hope you get a better result than you have now , good luck and let us know how it goes if you can, always interested to hear other peoples stories! please feel free to ask any more questions best wishes Vicki

Hi vickiemily. Wow that is quite expensive especially for one ear! I suppose that's the price you pay to go to a specialist and have your ears done exactly how you want them. I have just had my earfolds removed. I should get a significant refund however the equipment and surgeon fees will not be given back. I feel quite upset as I've essentially paid money to go right back to where I started along with all the discomfort of recovery with my ears. Unfortunately the problem with the EarFold is you cannot adjust the intensity of the fold, so it is rather limited in what it can do.

Anyhow I'm going to schedule and appointment with Dr. O'Toole to see what options the EarStitch method will give. I only really want the top part of both my ears to be pushed back ever so slightly. Maybe a 4-5mm at most. At most I'm probably willing to spend around £4000, even then that's quite a lot of money for me. But we shall see what the Doctors opinion is.

I had a few more questions if you don't mind me asking. Firstly what are the benefits from the EarStitch. Secondly how long would I have to take off for work should I go through with the operation?
September 26, 2017
PS. I've also seen some criticism of the Stitch method. People saying there ears have moved from the position after a few months or years.

Hi again, yes it is a large expense but one that I feel was worth it, I was fortunate enough to have been left some inheritance which covered this , otherwise it would not have been an option financially for me so I was extremely lucky. I understand you must feel really upset and disappointed at having the earfolds removed, I know I would too , it is a real shame after having paid for them and expected a really good result, and as you say been through the recovery too to be back where you started , I did originally consider earfold until I heard about the earstitch method which I preferred the sound of. good luck with sorting an appointment with Mr O' Toole, hopefully he will be able to give you an honest and realistic idea of if earstitch will be an option for you, and one that is financially viable for you, please update us how you get on it is always good to hear how others find their experience of this.
of course, ask as many questions as you want, I will try and answer them fully and hope it helps, I have found the benefits from earstitch are that he recovery time was very smooth and fast, rapid return to work , very minimal, the scar is at the back of your ear so well hidden and discreet, you can get away with not telling people if you wish or just say you had a minor op but people wouldn't know what unless you told them the details, I also had no pain after except 4 hours of throbbing/ discomfort the night of my op once the local wore off I had it done just before midday the local only wore off by 7pm I only had to take 2 tablets that sorted the discomfort and no further pain after at all which I was very very glad about and surprised as I was expecting a lot more pain post op , I was advised to take 3 days off work ,the actual day of the op of course then 2 days after that, that is what Mr O ' toole advised and he got it spot on, I actually booked a week off and asked my boss to go back after 3 days as I felt fine and the bruising and swelling had almost gone by day 4 so I felt ready to go back, It depends if you have post op pain I guess as I was very lucky to be pain free right from the day afterwards, also as I just had 1 ear done I slept fine no pain or problems but some people who have both sides done have issues sleeping comfortably , and it depends whether you are happy for colleagues to know that you had the op done, I would have been ok to go to work the next day but that day the swelling and bruising had really come out on the front of the ear so people would have seen it, I didn't want anyone at work to know what I had had done so it suited me to have a few days off, by day 4 after the op the swelling and bruise had virtually gone . Yes I will be honest with you, re the ears moving with the stitch method as I said in my review I do still wear a headband by choice at night and whenever I am not at work with colleagues , it is 11 months since my op, I went back for a review as I do feel my ear has moved out slightly at the very top and bottom more, in the middle it is fairly flat still, I also have a stitch at the top and bottom that are near the skin surface and may have to be removed and a piece of skin taken out to bring the ear in further which I am hoping for as I really wanted my whole ear to be extremely flat , I don't mind wearing the headband at night for the rest of my life but it would be really great to not wear the headband in the daytime as at my age it is isn't ideal and I feel defeats the whole point of having this done to still be covering my ear after having the op when I take my headband off it does move out almost straight away and I worry about my ear returning to its original position I feel without wearing the headband it would do so and not stay as flat as it has, a lot of people would be perfectly happy with the position of my ear as it is now as it is still a massive improvement compared to how it was originally, but I prefer the very flat look and worry about it moving out later in life. good luck with your ear I am hoping you can find a surgeon who can offer the results you are hoping for.

Hi vicki

Thanks for your very detailed reply. One of the advantages of the EarFold was that they don't seem to move throughout time. I would only be looking for a minor change in my ears anyhow so I'm a little concerned about it moving. Did Greg O'Toole explain the reasons for this happening?

Finally, I have booked a consultation with Mr. O'Toole however after doing some research on him I'm quite concerned. I've seen some terrible reviews about him and his operations and not sure if I should cancel the consultation or perhaps discuss them with him and see what he has to say in defense. See below for the links:

http://messageboards.makemeheal.com/otoplasty-ear-surgery/greg-toole-t165605.html

I'm sure you had a good experience with him, but from the looks of things it seems to be a gamble. You're either going to get the results you wanted or things are going to go awry. If I'm going to pay over £4000 I'm not sure I want to take such a risk.

Did you come across these reviews when you were researching and deciding on who to go for with the operation?
October 5, 2017
hi again, yes when I first heard about this it was earfold I originally looked into until I then read about earstitch which I preferred the sound of, perhaps the earfold may have been a better option for me in that if you say they don't move over time, I was a little put off the earfold due to the incisions being at the front, I thought I t sounded painful and when he tried it on me it did fold my ear into an unnatural shape and I only had it on for about a minute but by the time I got home it left a purple mark on my ear- I have very sensitive reactive skin so was worried about it reacting and having to have it removed anyway. in answer to your question, yes he did explain at my first consultation and again on the day of surgery the risks of reoccurrence aswell as the other risks.
yes I did also see the bad reviews when doing my research , I came across them when searching online as I think most people looking into it do, and yes it did of course worry me, I first emailed in may 2015 but I was so unsure and nervous I didn't book an appointment, I kept on researching and reading lots of patient reviews and finding out as much as I could, I emailed again in july last year to finally go for it and book it, even on the day I very nearly didn't go but in hindsight I am very very glad I went ahead , I had read mixed reviews on other surgeons in London and had also read a lot of positive reviews about Mr O ' Toole so I thought I would go and see for myself, I kept an open mind, and didn't know what to expect . I have to say I honestly found him to be very kind, put me at ease straight away , was polite, professional but friendly and explained both earfold and earstitch very clearly to me . I did consider other surgeons before seeing him but I was reassured and confident in what he could offer so I didn't see any others after that . i did only look into ones in the London area though. I know I don't regret having it done , the improvement I have overall is still far far better than my ear was previously and if it can be tightened further i would be over the moon. please do keep us up to date on what you decide to do, i am always interested to hear how others get on with the same procedures and how it compares. Whether you chose to go ahead with your appointment or not , i hope that you can finally achieve the result you wish for your ears, good luck!

Hello Nipoga1422 :). What happened with your ears finally? Apart from them being too pushed back, did you have any problems healing? I really need to avoid to fix my ears twice as it happened to Vickieemily, so i tend to go for the Earfold (vs the stiches) . Thank you :)
November 26, 2017
Hi

How much was the procedure?
November 28, 2017
hi please see the other comments on here where I have fully explained the costs to somebody else who asked thanks!

Had a quote back. Can go on a month holiday to Europe, and have the procedure. Thanks

Thank you for this wonderful review. I'm considering this procedure and Dr. O'Toole appears to be the expert. Now all I have to do is gently convince my husband as to why I think I need it.

i am really unsure whether i should go for the Earstitch procedure or the Ear Fold. Does the Earstitch involve a cut? If so, how long would you say the healing was? I am very surprised of your experiences with his secretaries; so far it has been a disaster for me. I already had thou an appointment with the doctor and was really positively impressed :)
UPDATED FROM vickiemily

revision otoplasty 24/10/17

vickiemily
exactly one year to the day following my original earstitch procedure I had a revision done on 24/10/17. I went to the private patients unit , The Lyndhurst rooms at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, London for this, Once again , all went really well. I was only at the hospital for just over an hour and this was a very minor, quick and totally pain free procedure. Following the consultations in February and August of this year to discuss whether my right ear could be further pulled in tighter, and to remove the uppermost and lower most stitches which were very close to the skin surface during the revision I had some small pieces of skin removed to tighten the ear as I was hoping for a very flat look. I was very nervous and unsure whether to go back again as I was worried I was being too fussy and may lose the improvement I already had since the earstitch but it was bothering me the feeling that it was moving out especially at the top and bottom despite wearing a headband most of the time. Once again Mr O' Toole was very welcoming, polite, professional but friendly, I was very nervous but he put me at ease straight away and explained everything fully and got me again to show him in a mirror how I would hope my ear to look. He again listened to me and was open and honest with what he can or cant achieve, he explained the risks and outcomes clearly. I felt confident to talk openly and honesty about how I felt, the procedure itself did not take long at all, the local anaesthetic injections did sting a little this time where as they didn't the fist time, perhaps due to the previous scar but I had no pain or discomfort at all, Mr O' Toole chatted to me throughout which kept me calm and relaxed, I went home with a head bandage on as when I sat up I had a little bleeding, I kept this on through choice for 24 hours as it bled twice more that evening but stopped after a few minutes each time. I had minor soreness that evening, but didn't need to take any painkillers at all, there was a tiny amount of swelling and bruising but the first time much more so. This time as it was a much more superficial procedure you would hardly notice anything . I went back to work the next day and had no pain or problems, it all healed again fine and I had the stitches out at the Platinum medical centre just over 3 weeks later. I have by choice worn a headband 24/7 since the second procedure as I want to give it the very best chance of working and keeping it as flat as possible, I think this is more a mind over matter thing as I am now so used to wearing the headband which I of course dont want to for the rest of my life, but it is a confidence thing I am sure the ear would stay fairly flat without it but at the moment I am more comfortable wearing it, I hope to start to take it off even for short periods soon and get my confidence up , Mr O' Toole advised that after 3 months the headband wont make much difference anyway so I will try and take it off for short amounts of time at some point hopefully! I am definitely glad I went ahead with the second procedure, I was already thrilled with the improvement and this will hopefully achieve that final wish to tighten and flatten it further, I am once again exceptionally grateful to him for agreeing to do the revision, I again found him to be really kind, and I felt I can trust him. He hopes this is it now but has said I can return to him in future if I wanted to discuss anything I wasn't happy with, I didn't have to pay any fees to Mr O' Toole for the revision, I only had to pay £150 to the Royal Free for the use of their minor ops suite. The nurses there were lovely too. I am continually grateful for the huge improvement , happiness and confidence boost this has given me and I feel incredibly grateful to Mr O' Toole and his team for enabling this, again im very glad I went ahead and did it, the only regret I have is that It wasn't available 20 years ago when I was a teenager but I remain thankful I got the chance to have it done at all.
