First off – I’m a huge worrier and borderline hypochondriac. I was very nervous about invisalign and the affect it would have on my oral hygiene, cavity formation, the way my bite sits, and my tmj/clicking from clenching. I am however VERY glad I took the plunge.

My first piece of advice is: Go to an actual orthodontist. I went to a board certified specialist who only works in orthodontia, and is also an invisalign specialist. My case wasn’t very hard, as my teeth are not crooked. I just had a very sizeable gap between my front two teeth to close. We found a plan that would do it, and when I’m done in a month I will have to have a little bonding done, and also a wire fused to the back of my teeth! Everyone is different. So far, I couldn’t be HAPPIER with my results. As for my clenching/clicking problem, this has only helped. The trays take some of the pressure off of my jaw at night when I clench in my sleep. My bite has changed slightly, but only for the better. Your orthodontist will make sure of this in your plan if you are going to a reputable one. I’ve read many a horror story about people who end up with great looking teeth but an off bite, no thank you!

The pain: NOT unbearable! I have 24 trays total, currently on tray 20. I wear them for two weeks, and change into my next tray on Wednesday nights right before bed time. This way, When I wake up the “worst” part of the discomfort is over. My teeth are tender during tray changes for a day or two, but its definitely not something you can’t handle. I’m sure even complex cases aren’t bad. I just pop an ibuprofen when the headaches start from it and its no big deal, honestly. The first few weeks I had a few canker sores, but those went away when my mouth got used to the aligners J

The attachments: Also not so bad! I was disheartened to learn I needed 14 attachments in the beginning. The reviews on those I’ve read are also horrible, and again, its no big deal! You’re supposed to keep your trays in all day anyway, so they shouldn’t bother you too much. Here at the end of my treatment I keep my trays out for longer periods of time, and the attachments don’t bother me one bit. Your mouth gets used to them for sure. And aesthetically, no big deal. I’d rather have buttons than a bunch of wires in my mouth. Sure it’s a little noticeable, but I have only gotten compliments on how my teeth look. It is 100 percent worth it.

The hygiene: This is most important. I never once ate or drank ANYTHING other than water with my invisalign in my mouth. Everyone always asks how I keep them so clean. There is zero smell and zero hygiene issues. Every time I eat, I floss, brush lightly, and rinse. In the morning and before bed I also use a little mouthwash. I never bought a sonic cleaner or anything. I just brushed my aligners with warm water and a little xtra toothpaste. Do not use whitening toothpaste while in treatment, it is too abrasive to use as often as you will be brushing your teeth and aligners! I just used plain crest! Then, I would hand wash my aligners after brushing with foamy antibacterial soap, and rinse very well. Never once have they smelled off putting or gotten cloudy. Ever. Just take care of them and they will take care of you. Oh, and I keep a travel toothbrush set in my desk at work, in my car, and in my purse. They are about a buck and will be your life savers!
