I'm 40 years old and have had stubborn melasma for 10 years on my upper lip, cheeks, nose and a small mark on my forehead. I had tried everything! I had even tried 10% hydroquine! Nothing seemed to work. I was recommended to Dr. Mesa. He convinced me to try Obagi (again). I had tried Obagi twice before. I didn't see significant results with either use. He promised the way he prescribed how to use Obagi would yield real results.
He was right!
My melasma has reduced significantly! I've never seen better results. My melasma has lightened dramatically and my skin looks youthful & radiant! I get compliments all the time about how great my skin looks! I continue to see Dr. Mesa for my skin and it continues to improve. I highly recommend Dr. Mesa for all your skin care needs!

Welcome to the community and thanks so much for offering your opinion of your doctor.

It would be great if you could give us a little more detail about your experience, like why you had the surgery, your tips for getting good results, pros/cons, and info on the recovery process.

Our community members especially love seeing photos from before, during, and after — a realistic look at what they can expect. Photos grab the attention of the community and encourage more support for you.

As a community manager, I get requests all the time from other members who want me to to keep encouraging people to share their experiences, which are so helpful for others considering these procedures. So please accept this as a well-intentioned request from thousands.

How was Dr Mesa method of using Obagi yield results this time around different than your use of it before? How is it different from the instructions given by Obagi?

First he analyzes your skin, then every 4 weeks, based on your results, he adjusts how/when/and where on your face to use each of the products.

hi, how are your results now? are you able to maintain your clearance? some before and after photos would be great!! Please comment. Really keen to know more success stories otherwise forums are full of people who are never able to find right treatment for melasma. Very discouraging...

Thank you for sharing this, Melissa. What was different in using same Obagi?

The way Dr. Mesa prescribes it. He meets with you every four weeks and examines your skin. He then adjusts how to use one or more of the products. He also adjusts the strength of tretonin. I do not have before and after pictures. But I can say this: I am half Latina and half Italian. I have a medium olive complexion. I had noticeable dark marks on my cheeks, almost like two distinct wings, one on each cheek. I also had a very noticeable dark marks on my upper lip. It looked like a mustache in pictures. I had a few spots appearing on my nose and one on my forehead. I struggled and researched, and saw different doctors for ways to get rid of my melasma for years as I saw the spots grow and more appear. Frankly, it sucked. Nothing worked. It was, at times, depressing. I'm sure anyone who has it can relate. But after about 60 days on Obagi with Dr. Mesa I noticed a big improvement! All those marks had lightened considerably! And the clear outlines were blurred... The spots were going away. The spot on my forehead is gone. The wing on my right cheek is virtually gone as is the spot above my right upper lip. The other side is much much lighter, and I have to look at my face at certain angles to see the spots. I continue to see improvement. Now, I'm still on the treatment so I predict I'll see even more improvement and no new spots... Which is just as important. Melasma is very difficult to treat. And I may not be able to rid myself completely of it, but so far I've never seen better results and I'm very happy. PLUS, my skin looks radiant and glowing. I know how discouraging it can be to have Melasma. That is why I'm posting all this information. If you struggle with Melasma as I have for so long... I would definitely go to Dr. Mesa.
P.s. Unfortunately I do not have before/after pictures available to post right now.

hey, does your doc tell you how to maintain your results? it's one thing to get clearance but how about staying cleared. what is his opinion about it?
December 7, 2015
Yes. He plans on putting me on a maintenance program. I can write about that when I move into that phase. As I mentioned, I am not finished with the Obagi yet. I have never had my Melasma clear up, so this is a huge improvement and I look forward and am excited to see even more results. And if you have Melasma... You will likely be working to keep it under control for an indefinite period of time. It rarely just disappears for good. I'm extremely happy with the amazing progress and results I have seen so far.

Hey sounds great. I can relate to you since i am struggling to find right treatment for my melasma. I am also treating it internally which I think is the long term strategy for me. There is something wrong with our bodies. My complete focus is on my diet. I drink loads of water, eat loads of raw vegetables and fruits, and high protein and fats food. Minimal carbs and sugars. Also, taking Vitamin C, MSM, grapefruit seed extract, phycogenol, zinc, calcium and magnesium. Will add Gluthione tablets soon as well. Internal cure may take many years but for me I have to try my best. I really hope melasma won't stay with me indefinitely. If my body finds it's balance again, that should help melasma go away. Hope you also work on your diet too. Hey, would really appreciate hearing about your maintenance plan. do provide full details as it will help me too in case my derm is not as talented as yours. All the best.
