One day post-op reflection
26 May, 2021
I'll start with telling how the rest of the surgery day went for me. When I was being prepped, Dr. Den Hondt visited and marked my abdomen, flanks, and inner thighs, making sure we had the same things in mind. A while later I was brought into the operation room, and under anesthesia I went... I remember I felt like I was in good hands.
My surgery went well. However, I woke up from the anesthesia shivering like crazy, after which the nurses put a warm blanket over me, which helped immediately. But afterwards I all of a sudden started sweating and melting, it was so hot suddenly. Luckily this went away too after a while. An hour later I could drink a bit of water, and about two hours later a small can of coke. The right incision in my tummy bled a lot though, and the nurses gave me towels and a pad to put on it. They explained it was normal to lose fluids mixed with blood in the beginning, and that I would go away soon. The nurses were all very professional and caring. Dr. Den Hondt visited me twice to check on me and make sure I was doing okey. I'm glad I had her as my surgeon.
My mom picked me up later that day and I took it easy. My dinner was a bit smaller then usual, but I listened to my body. I went to bed early, but woke up a couple of times to pee, as I drank a lot of water. I didn't have any troubles falling asleep again as the anesthesia was still in my system.
The next day went okey. The pain was very uncomfortable, but manageable. I'm all swollen and bruised, but I hadn't bled anymore luckily. I took a painkiller every six hours, which I think helped a bit, but not that much. I mostly slept, and any other activities were done sitting. The most painful thing was standing up again after sitting or lying down, but once up and walking the pain becomes kinda okey again. For me the most annoying thing about the compression garment is that I'm all itchy underneath, and not able to scratch, grrrr. Tomorrow my nurse is coming to change my band-aids. I will also shower and have my garment washed, then I'll take the first pictures without my it and post them later.

My Liposuction Experience As a Transgender Man (FTM)
25 May, 2021
Today is the day I get my surgery. I'm starting this with explaining my reason why I want this surgery. I'll introduce myself shortly. I'm a 21yo transgender man, which means I was born female but medically transitioned to male. After two years of psychological screening, I started taking testosterone in December 2016, at age 16. At 17 I had top surgery (breast removal), and at 18 I had my hysterectomy (womb and ovaries removal). I have not had bottom surgery, and have no desire to since I'm happy with my nether region, and so is my boyfriend.
Throughout my teenage years I struggled a lot with my mental health, going through depression, self harm, psychosis, and disordered eating. This all lead me to getting antidepressants/antipsychotics (Quetiapine) prescribed. These made me gain a lot of weight. I'm 156 cm tall (5'1"). My highest weight was 62 kg (136 lbs). I stopped taking the medication in March 2019, and the weight quickly started falling off. I've been at my lowest weight for about a year now, 52,2 kg (115 lbs), and can't seem to get lower. Unfortunately, even though I tried my best to eat healthy and exercise, I never lost the fat in my abdomen, flanks, and inner thighs. I'm actually quite skinny, as I can see my ribs in the right lighting. This frustrated me a lot as I found myself very disproportionate, never wanting to walk around shirtless. Eventually I came to the conclusion that the only solution was liposuction, which I quickly made an appointment for.
Dr. Den Hondt is an absolute sweetheart. Very attentive, patient, and compassionate. She let me share my problems and really made me feel listened to. She explained everything very well, answering all my questions with a lot of care. I could not wish for a better surgeon. At my first consultation I also ordered my compression garment (size XS), which was very affordable. It arrived a couple days later. In general, all the staff in the hospital were very friendly and professional, making everything go smoothly.
Right now I'm really excited! I can't wait to finally get the body I've been dreaming of for years... I know the recovery can be harsh initially, but I'm ready. My family, friends and boyfriend all support me, so I'll always have people there for me. Let's do this!!
