WORTH IT
For as long as I can remember, I knew something wasn’t right with my legs. Since I was a teenager, I was often told I was being negative because I was on the thin side, but my legs didn’t match the rest of my body. As the years went by, they only seemed to get worse. I spent years searching for answers, hoping something would finally help.
The outdoors has always been my playground. Hiking was something I loved, but over time, my legs became heavier and more painful. Something that had always brought me so much joy was becoming harder and harder to do. I started losing hope that things would ever change.
Then, in spring 2025, I came across an Instagram post from the Advanced Lipedema Treatment (ALT) program at the Roxbury Institute. It changed everything for me. I immediately reached out for a consultation, which took place in October 2025. After meeting with Dr. Smart and his team, I finally felt heard and understood. I wasn’t crazy, and there was a reason for what I had been experiencing. More importantly, there was hope.
With the help of Dr. Smart and the incredible Roxbury team, I had my surgery in April 2026. For the first time in my life, I began experiencing what it felt like to hike without that constant heaviness in my legs. It was a feeling I had never known before, and it gave me back something I thought I was losing.
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro had been a dream of mine for years. In August 2026, just a few months after surgery, I stood at the summit feeling the best I ever had. Overcome with joy, I jumped into the air, and that moment was captured in a photo.
When I looked at that picture later, something hit me. Not once had I thought about how my legs felt or worried about whether they would hold me back. I was simply there, living my dream and celebrating what I had accomplished.
That is what this journey means to me. It’s about so much more than my legs. It’s about getting back to the things I love, feeling free in my body, and being able to chase the adventures that make me feel alive.
I will forever be grateful to the Advanced Lipedema Treatment program, Dr. Smart, and the entire Roxbury team for helping me find answers, giving me hope, and helping me get back to the mountains. Thank you!!
