Having gradually seen my teeth becoming more and more misaligned over several years I decided it was time to do something about it before they became any worse! They were fine up until my late twenties as it was only then that they started to move and look overcrowded.
I visited 3 different orthodontists/dentists over around 18 months and chose the one I thought was the best. The initial appointments were fine with moulds of my teeth taken and a clin check sent to me via email a few weeks later which I was pleased with.
My self confidence has been rapidly declining over several years now and I had become embarrassed to smile properly in public due to my top right centre tooth overlapping more and more with the next one to the right, and it had kind of twisted around too so there was a gap between this tooth and the next one. I hated having photographs taken and when I viewed some we had taken on our summer holiday this year (which when taken of me smiling from the right hand side and made my tooth look like it was sticking right out over my lip) that was the last straw as I was so upset that I had ruined a lovely photo of me and my husband as all I could focus on in the picture was my teeth. I also have issues with my lower teeth as again the right hand side is misaligned with the canine tooth sitting much further forward than the rest. I went to have the Invisalign braces fitted on Tuesday 8 December. The appointment lasted just over half an hour and to be honest was not very pleasant! I have the attachments on every one of my top teeth apart from one at the side which you cant see, some teeth have two on them, and attachments on the side teeth at the bottom but none on the middle ones. The experience of having the attachments fitted was one I wouldn't like to go through again as the drill/file which was used was quite scary for me. I have also had one of my side teeth (the one at the top on the right of the middle tooth) filed on each side to create a little bit of room for movement and that was horrible. I couldn't wait for it all to be finished and just kept reminding myself of how good it would be when it is all finished. I have been told I will need to have 20 aligners so 10 months. So far I find it hard to remove them to eat as I have a lot of attachments so I have to gradually wriggle them out carefully so as not to bend or break them. I suffer from a dry mouth so I am drinking lots of water (which is a good thing!) and chapped lips. I have a slight lisp which has improved in the last few days. I experience the really tight feeling that others have commented on when I put them back in but that goes away within about an hour. My main issue is when I take them out to eat as my teeth/gums feel really weak initially and I cant bite anything hard. If I wait 20 minutes or so and then eat it is better but then that's 20 minutes of treatment or eating time wasted! I have also had the odd headache but painkillers help with that. I never thought it would be easy so I was not under the impression that this would be pain or discomfort free but I am determined to get used to them as the end result will help my confidence no end.

1 week in...

Jackiepkn
Ok so I am now one week in and the aligners have become way more comfortable and much easier to take out and put back in. I've been reading a lot of posts and wonder whether I should invest in some 'chewies' to help them fit snugly all of the time and also some retainer brite to keep them really clean? Can anyone advise please?

Chewies won't be nice with them on but they should fit snugly anyways. Retainer brite can definitely help you keep them cleaner.

Almost time for Tray 2...but had aligners out for 4 hours, does this mean I have to wait longer before I change trays?

Jackiepkn
Almost Time for Tray 2, I have one more day of tray 1 left. The aligners don't feel anywhere near as tight as they did at the start of tray 1 and so I am a little apprehensive as to what tray 2 will be like (pain/discomfort). I was really bad at the weekend as I went to an event and didn't have my aligners in for 4 hours - can anyone tell me whether this means I need to wait a bit longer until I change to tray 2?

No worries. 4 hours won't make a big difference. Try not to be without aligners for that length of time.
