Festoon Surgery

Festoon Surgery

I started getting a bag on my cheek when I was 30 years old from crying when my childhood pet passed away. The bag went away and it only came back a few times when I either was stressed out and suffering from insomnia or cried. But it would eventually go away and I was back to normal good skin. I never suffered from acne or any other skin problems. I got some under eye filler done thinking that would help and the next month the bag was bigger and under both eyes for the first time so I started doing research and discovered it was called a Festoon and when I googled festoons this particular doctor pulled up talking on YouTube about how he can treat festoons easily with Bi-Lateral Lower Lid Blepharoplasty and Bi-Lateral Lower Lid Laser Resurfacing. So I said sign me up and within a few weeks I had the surgery. There are not a lot of doctors doing festoon surgery so I thought he must be the only one with the skills. But turns out it’s because it is not an easily treatable thing and this has been the worst experience of my life. Right before my surgery I didn’t even have the festoon it was gone. I had called to cancel but his office talked me into it saying it would always be a structural issue and better to do it when I’m young and I’ll heal faster and the collagen will grow. Well it has been two months and my skin still looks awful from the surgery. I wish someone would’ve posted about this so I could’ve been warned and not followed through. It has been a complete nightmare. I did well over 100 hours of vinegar soaks as instructed and walked around for a month with aquaphor on my face but I was at least hopeful then that I would look better when it was healed but once it “ healed” my skin looks so much worse than the festoon that I didn’t even have all the time. The skin is now bumpy and scaley. I knew ahead of time that the skin would be red but I thought I could just cover the redness with makeup until it evened out. But it is uncoveravle with makeup and looks like I have bad acne or wrinkles under my eyes. I am posting this to see if anyone can suggest what I can do to improve my healing. I was prescribed Clobetasol steroid cream to use once a day for one week on and one week off intervals. You can literally see where he put the laser on my face in vertical lines. I want to cry every time I look in the mirror. If I could go back I absolutely would never have done this. It ruined my face. I will do anything to make this skin normal again so I hope some doctor out there has a suggestion.

So sorry to hear this. Thank you for sharing your experience. I hope you can find support in the community.

So sorry. Who was your doctor?

This looks like it was done aggressively and you're still healing. It probably won't stay like that, but you need to make sure you're doing an anti inflammatory diet to help it heal quicker.

So many things done agressively. Thanks for sharing. I have to warn everyone about laser. Glad you’re telling about this.

It has gotten worse to the point of starting to form a keloid scar and all the doctor that did my surgery prescribed me was a steroid cream that I use every two weeks and it wasn’t getting better after 3 weeks on that so I finally went to a dermatologist for a treatment plan and I received 5-FU chemotherapy shots under my eyes and did red light therapy and IPL. They also told me to use silicone gel sheets as much as possible and I woke up today looking much better. I get another IPL in two weeks. So I feel a lot better that I’m going to actually heal now but no thanks to the plastic surgeon. Dermatologists are the only ones I want doing lasers on me from now on.

Why won’t you share the doctor that did this? That would be helpful. Or at lease send us to the review of this doctor.

I signed an agreement so I’m sorry I can’t mention the doctor but thank you @urlm for your comment.

Didn't realise that was legal. Definitely shouldn't be. Major red flag, though.

And yes, definitely stick with the silicone scar pads as much as possible to suppress the keloid scarring.

You're only 2 months out, so give your skin the time it needs to heal and avoid the sun at all costs.

This will likely take years of treatment, though, which is tough and expensive if you're only seeing dermatologists for treatments.

Down the road (1 year from now) if you're still having issues, especially related to discolouration and scarring, I can definitely recommend microneedling, which is something you can do cost-free at home.

I wrecked my under eyes too with a terrible filler treatment 3+ years ago. I'm still not fully recovered, but at-home microneedling has helped me tremendously, and given me a tremendous psychological relief, knowing there is something I can keep doing at home which actually slowly but surely improves my skin.

Send me a PM if and when you want to learn more on how to do it properly. Most YouTube DIY videos out there are very bad. You gotta go deep with microneedling and use proper products to get results.

Or maybe it was as part of a refund agreement, in which case not a red flag you could've picked up on. Not judging.

It would be so nice to know the provider that did this to you. You could keep people from going through what you have went through. At least it would send some good karma your way.
April 8, 2019
Agreed!
June 6, 2022
Yes!! One should be able to post the name of the doctor.
April 21, 2019
You should name the doctor, otherwise this review isn't really helpful. I'm terribly sorry about what happened to you. You should've never had CO2 resurfacing at this age. Your problem was not sun-damaged skin.
May 6, 2019
I was thinking about having Festoon Surgery until I saw what has happened to you. You really should name the doctor that did this to your face. It would be ashamed for him/her to continue to work on people and continue with this shoddy work.
May 6, 2019
Well, she can't because she signed an agreement not to, apparently. I know who it is based on description, surgery cost, procedure type and similar reviews this doctor has gotten, but when I pointed it out in a different comment here, it got removed for violating the rules. Guess you're going to have to make your own judgement.
May 6, 2019
Hopefully I can elaborate some without breaking any rules: She went to a doctor who heavily markets a CO2-bleph procedure as a "unique" procedure only he does, and a "cure" to any kind of festoons/malar mounds. Neither of which are true.

His CO2 resurfacing only targets skin laxity, and as a result will only work in festoons that are a result of old, sun-damaged skin. I've personally spoken with several young patients who has had bad experiences with this dr, because they are not at all good candidates for this type of procedure.

Why he keeps doing this procedure in young patients, while charging and outrageous amount for it, is beyond me..

This procedure can produce excellent results in the fight candidates, but then again, there are numerous, more ethical doctors out there who does the exact same procedure, they just don't market themselves as aggressively, nor to they claim to be the only ones doing it.

So depending on the etiology of your festoons, the treatment approach will be different. This is really just something you'll have to do a lot of research into before you start seeing doctors, because there are lots of doctors out there who don't seem to understand this condition properly. There is no "one-size-fits-all" procedure for this, as it can have various causes. Some have them from birth, others get them with age - that's a big indicator, for one.

5 month update

It’s been 5 months since my surgery and my under eyes are VERY red and the skin is still a little bumpy and uneven. I have to apply lots of makeup every day. I can’t even go to the gym without makeup on because I’m too insecure about it. It’s definitely way worse than the small festoon that I had 20% of the time before. The doctor I went to has been mentioned by others. It’s crazy that they knew without me saying anything who would do this. The surgery was NOT worth it and I’m sure in time they will come up with better ways to fix a lower lid festoon other than burning your face off. Since my already overpriced surgery that ruined my skin I have already paid over $2k to a dermatologist to try and heal faster without scarring. I’ve gotten BBL laser,
2 IPL’s and Two 5-FU chemotherapy shots, Fotona laser for redness 3x, and steroid creams.

Did it finally resolve

Was this with dr Scheiner or someone else? What did he say was the reason why it came out with these results, vs the other patients photos that seem great. I am worried now.

I know what you went through when I got the same problem from crying too much when I was grieving about a loss. I was going to have the same treatment but wont now that I see what happened to you. So, thanks for posting. I'm sorry this happened, but you are very beautiful even with the damage, so don't stress out over it.
December 5, 2019
Just see anyone but this guy and you're okay. She was not the right candidate for this procedure at all. A clue should be when he says "festoons are due to sun damage" when they obviously can be due to many different things, but his treatment only addresses sun damage so it fits his narrative.

He's not ethical at all. There's a different doctor in the same state doing the same procedure, I contacted both, and the ethical doctor said this isn't a suitable treatment for you - this guy's office spammed with e-mails and calls trying everything to reel me in, despite me not being a candidate for this procedure.

Steer away from this guy - there are far better options.

Steer away from who? Who is the doctor?
August 23, 2025
Hi! Did the ethical doctor explain why its not a suitable treatment ?
Did he/She have an suggestion what would be a good treatment insted?
December 9, 2019
Please let us know the better options and the better doctors because I’m not having any luck. Thanks
