I decided to get braces for a second time. I had them for 2+ years when I was in my teens. I failed to wear my retainers consistently and nearly 15-20 years later, here I am! My main reasons for getting braces a second time were mainly for health reasons: bad bite, shifting teeth (crooked), excessive wearing on teeth, receding gums, TMJ clicking, and then appearance.
Went I went in for the consultation I had never heard of Damon braces and did not have a preference. I really did like the idea of having a fuller smile, better facial aesthetics, and shorter treatment time. I was given an estimate of having to wear the braces for 12-18 months.
I have to admit that treatment has been painful- specifically the first two weeks take some getting use to. My cheeks were tore up and the bite turbos caused a lisp and made eating really difficult. I just had my first wire change after two months. Ouch!
Despite all of the discomfort, I am seeing major changes in my teeth. My TMJ clicking has stopped. I am able to close my mouth comfortably now. My bottom teeth are totally straight. It's really amazing how fast things are moving. I'm very happy with the results so far!

hi, I will be getting damon braces soon probably upper and lower metal damons.. I am a 44 year old woman and I work as a receptionist in a law firm.. So I have a very slight lisp now due to misalignment of teeth.. Now I hope when I get the braces on my speech isn't 10 times worse and the lisp just stays as is.. I'm a a working professional and I deal with clients all day on the phone and in person.. I so hope the speech will not be too bad.. i plan taking a few days off to get used to the braces.. was thinking of getting the clear damon braces on top but I heard they are very BULKY and my teeth are protruding as is and full lips.. I'm afraid if I get the clear braces I will not be able to close my lips.. So thinking of just getting the metal.. So confused.

Three Months Into Treatment

I can really feel my arch widening. My back teeth have been sore the last few weeks. In addition, my front teeth seem to be moving down. It's a little nerve-wracking because I'm not please with how my front upper teeth are shifting around. I know this is not the final result but my teeth look so small and my gums... ugh! Another story in it of itself!

At the end of your treatment you can always reassess. Short teeth with a gummy smile is a prime candidate for a gum lift, which they can do with lasers very safely nowadays, but so much will change over the course of your treatment. The opposite problem (really big teeth and receding gums) is a much more difficult problem :). Your smile will be gorgeous! But I know the worse-before-better thing is so annoying :-/. Thanks for the update!!!!

I've already had a gum lift. They cannot go any further into the gum line without exposing the root of my teeth. I've considered lip repositioning surgery but like you said, so much will change of the course of my treatment. It's too soon to tell what course of action I will take.

Five Months Into Treatment

Scheduled for 3rd wire change in early January. This will be the last wire I wear. I've noticed the flaring in my front teeth has changed significantly. I look less "bucked tooth" than I did five months ago. My smile is becoming more symmetrical and my bite more aligned. I know pictures do not do the treatment justice since most of the work is being done in the back of my mouth. There's not a whole lot straightening going on here. But I FEEL a huge difference. I can close my mouth comfortably now and relax into my bite. Totally new concept for me! Feels awesome :)

Congratulations! You sound so much happier overall than you did in your last post :).
In the last picture, you had a slightly gummy smile, but in the first and in this one, you don't! Is it just when you smile very big? I have that issue, though it doesn't bother me at all so I never think about it. I just remember that you mentioned your gums last time. Has your doctor talked about addressing the uneven wear, or is this more to keep it from happening more?
Thank you for updating!

The "gummy smile" picture was not a normal smile. It was just an attempt to show my upper teeth more clearly. But yes, my gummy smile is most noticeable when I smile really big. It's not a huge issue for me at this point.
Yes, my doctor has addressed the uneven wear of my teeth. We are working to correct the root cause of it. Correcting the damage is not something she specializes in. I will most likely need to see a cosmetic dentist if and when I decide to address it.
