Whaaaaat! OMG! I recommend reading the book br Dr. Susan Kolb and watch the hour long documentary about breast implants. Website is called " absolutely safe.com". My husband set it up for me. He mentioned something about downloading Fandor first. You have to pay a fee of something around $5.00. After watching the movie you can cancel the subscription. I feel this is a must for all women who have implants and those that are considering it. I did several interviews and knew I wanted drains and to have the whole capsule removed. If a doctor said he may or may not use drains. Then I moved on to the next doctor. It's great to educate yourself (very impowering). This way you will know what you want. My implants were silicon. Had my second in for 23 yrs. one was totally ruptured. Let me know what you think after watching the documentary.

Thanks for your comment lisaroxy... I will look into that website...on my consultation the dr said he is removing the capsules and putting in drains...feeling good about that... He also said I would be asleep so I think thT would be general anesthesia .. I need to ask more questions about that ....,

Thanks for starting your story here on RealSelf! Would you consider replacing your implants or do you just want them removed? Any idea how much natural breast tissue you have at this time?

There are some amazing bras out there now, even if you do get them out and are not super in love with your result.

Please keep us posted on what you decide to do!

I do not want them replaced . I feel confident dr pastrick will do a great job on me just with the removal and no lift...

Hi there....I had mine removed in April this year after nearly 8 years with a rupture....they removed part of the capsule on the ruptured and side and left the other in....I was told by the ps it's wasn't urgent but needed taking out....but an nhs surgeon said they needed removing ASAP....have never been told they are safe to be left in .....this is bad information honey...maybe see another doc x
September 24, 2014
I would definitely recommend a second opinion! Good luck in your journey, and keep us posted...
September 25, 2014
A second opinion would be a good idea. I'm 57 and had mine in for 26 years. They were both ruptured. Yes, a small amount of silicone can be left in and is said to not be harmful. If they are ruptured, a lot more silicone may be sitting there than if they were removed. The FDA states that they are not necessarily liftetime devices. I agree, mine did not last. The best thing would be to listen to your own body. If they bother you it's best to remove. Good luck, keep us posted.
September 25, 2014
Have you had yours removed? I am still researching but will schedule surgery soon as I feel comfortable... I have another consult on October 13....
September 25, 2014
Yes, I had mine removed under local. It was quick and painless. I'm sure every doctor and patient is different but that was my experience. Mine were subglandular so that helped to make it easier. I know women here have had them removed under local that had them under the muscle as well. It took about 30-40 mins. I had a root canal last year that made this look like a party. So it's not bad at all. Also, I don't look bad, I'm having a lift done but they are not horrible looking. If you research this site, you'll see that so many women look great. I'm like you, I'm not in my 20s and I had them for over 2 and half decades and I didn't have stretch marks, wrinkles or anything. They seemed to have went back to where they were. They do droop some, but that's the reason I ended up with implants. I nursed at a young age, then lost weight and they drooped in my 30s. They didn't want to give me a lift and leave scars I'm assuming so they suggested implants to "lift" them. So, I ended up with bigger lower boobs! They actually look so much better now. On the subject of the silicone being left, my surgeon got everything out, but, you probably can't avoid the microscopic amounts of silicone being left if there's a rupture. There's a lot of information that conflicts out there. I have to say, people have silicone pacemakers and other prostheses that have silicone in them. There's silicone in anti-gas tablets that we eat, and other items, it's around us. For me, personally, I didn't have an AUTO immune response TO silicone, at all, but, I think I had an immune repsonse of some sort. I don't think the silicone itself was toxic to me, I think just having a foreign body sit within my body for so long caused problems, locally and systemically. This is what I'm thinking anyway. I'm not a doc and don't want to speak for anyone else on this subject but that's what seems to be the case for me. I will say, I did notice a difference the minute they popped out. It was drastic. Also, I don't know if it's a fluke or not but I noticed while walking yesterday that nothing hurt, knees, feet, legs and back, while I walked. We'll see if that continues! Let me know if you have further questions. Sorry for the novel!

Thank you so much for your comment... It is so helpful and such a relief to know your surgery went so well. I know there is the possibility of things going wrong but nice to hear something positive too... My doctor is doing general anesthesia . And will be putting in drains... Did you have those? Also, I was wondering what your cost was. I was told complete recovery in 4 to 6 weeks.. How did your recovery go ? Again, thanks so much for your input which has been so helpful...
September 25, 2014
I didn't have drains but also haven't had any problems healing. I did have a bit of fluid build up in the left breast which was easily drained and it never came back. Each day things just got better and better. I'm about 6 weeks out now and feel normal. So, his estimation on healing is about right, at least for me. My recovery was really smooth. I didn't need any pain after surgery. Just sensitivity more than anything. It's really one of the easier things I've ever done. It's funny, there's so much nervousness surrounding explanting. I was SOOO nervous before I went in I felt like running out. That's not really like me but for some reason I was really scared. I think some of it was the fact that they were in for so long, not sure what sort of artifacts my surgeon would find! LOL And they were artifacts. The implants that were put in in 1988 were double luman Becker implants. Silicone on the inside luman with saline on the outside. The saline had been long gone by the time they were taken out and the implants were taken off the market. So yeah, I was scared and it came out to be such an easy peasy thing to do. So funny. I'm sure yours will go well too. If you're lurking on the site you'll see how so many women are surprised how much better things go than expected.
September 25, 2014
We're your implants ruptured???
September 25, 2014
Yes, the one on the left showed no sign of the outer saline luman at all. Meaning there was there were to sacks. One in the center with silicone that sat in another sack filled with saline on the outside. Hence the name double luman. It was just the center silicone implant left as the saline luman had ruptured then adhered to it the outside of the silicone sack making it look like it was just a small silicone implant. It was ruputured just at the incision site and no silicone was left inside I'm sure. So, that was easy. On the right was literally a shreaded implant. It looked like it had been run over by a truck. The silicone was all over the place and both lumans were destroyed. He cleaned it all out. I feel great and as said earlier from what I've read and based on how I feel now, if there is a microscopic amount of silicone in there there's not much you can do about it and it doesn't appear to be harmful. But, there are varying opinions about this. And, I certainly feel fantastic. Again, another thing that I think really helped was that these were subblandular and it all sort of stayed within that pocket. I didn't have anything in the lymph nodes etc. The silicone was the very thick sticky stuff which you want as it won't migrate. The surgeon and I were concerned due to the age of the implants. Long ago the silicone used was thin and watery, which migrated easily and could possibly cause infection. Also, I think it was helpful that when the implants were put in, I was a 36 C. The implant size was 250ccs. When the outer saline luman ruptured (probably early on) they became 180s or so as half of them were gone. Then I gained some breast tissue over the years. So, I grew boobs and shrunk in implants! Better outcome. I think if your implants are ruptured, you're going to be getting them out so you'll be just fine. But, the opinion of the first surgeon to leave them forever is questionable because of the fact that they could be ruptured. Have you had an mri or any imaging showing that they may be ruptured?
September 25, 2014
Yes I had a mammogram . They are definitely ruptured... I hope and pray that the surgery will be successful in that I will not be deformed but the most important thing is to get them out before other health problems exist . Right now I have a lot of joint pain. At 68 yrs old that could just be arthritis . We ll just have to wait and see.... Thank you for your comment....
September 25, 2014
Good luck with your procedure! I'm sure it'll go very well.
September 26, 2014

September 26, 2014

September 26, 2014
No....I am planning on scheduling the surgery on Monday if nothing changes....or as we say here in TN" if God is willing, and the creeks don't rise". Have a great day!!!!
September 26, 2014
I am 68 years old!!
September 26, 2014
Thoughts and prayers are with you for Monday! :)
September 26, 2014
Thank you so much...prayers are always welcome... Is your recovery continuing to go well? Vv
September 26, 2014
Yes, I feel better everyday. Little things I forgot about: not feeling like I have weights hanging from my chest. Constant pain in left breast, neck and shoulder pain, back pain and general joints aching. Most of these are gone or have decreased greatly in intensity. At this age I expect arthritis, some stiff joints etc. But, not at the level it was before. I'm not expecting the explant to get rid of all my problems but the ones that were there due to the implants are improving. Just this last few days it's even more noticeable that I'm feeling even better. So, give it time, even though i noticed a difference right away, it's been a smudge more than 6 weeks for me and improvement is still occurring.
September 26, 2014
Your arthritis symptoms seem like mine....I hope mine is a reaction and subsides after surgery...how old are you???
September 26, 2014
I'm 57 and started having general aches at about 40 or so, 8 years after my implants were put in. Just got back from surgery for my lift. I'm just about to post a review on it with photos.

I think if you're comfortable with that then I would do it. Especially if you know what you're goals are in the surgery. You're welcome to click on my name and go to my profile and look at the review I just did. I tried to change some of it but that's not possible on this site.

September 27, 2014

I REALLY hope you follow through with an explant Car me. I'm 50 and decided no matter what I looked like after explant - it was FAR MORE important for me to live the 2nd half of my life free of implants. I think you will love feeling lighter and being able to feel your soft natural breasts again (we forget what they felt like and I had mine for 19 years). The doctor who said you would be fine leaving a RUPTURED toxic bag in - IS A COMPLETE IDIOT. Please do NOT EVER take any advice from an asinine, incompetent doctor pretending to be a professional ever again. He does not have your best interest - there are many other caring competent doctors who can help you. Please keep us updated on your decision.
September 28, 2014
Happy and Holistic, thank you for your concern. I have decided to choose the ps my gynecologist and primary medical care dr recommended . I feel at peace... I will be calling tomorrow to schedule date of Explant . I will keep you posted....how are you doing????

I'm glad you feel at peace with your decision. I am feeling wonderful. I am not back to my regular workout schedule but I have taken some good (slow) walks the last few days, 2-3 miles at a time. I have one more week with the compression garment and am very much looking forward to being able to just wear a normal bra or nothing at all! Thank you for asking and I look forward to your upcoming explant update!
