52. Hard worker, 6 kids, heavy smoker, sun worshipper, etc. self-abuse was evident, I was a wreck. Not rich, and not afraid of the unknown, or afraid of doing it all at once. How I found this Dr and facility is a long story in and of itself (below). Now that I found her, been there, and went back again - I will never go anywhere else! (unless it gets famous and too expensive :-)). I am telling you, if you are a regular person who does not need or do 5 star glamorous environments, this place is AWESOME with down home personal care like no other!
Key Benefits (more details on each below): 1. GREAT RESULTS!, 2.Fly or drive to El Paso Tx (easy US access), 3. Accommodations INCLUDED as long as needed, with or without partner (that are fabulous), 4. Uses Local anesthetics (Fabulous), 5. Lots of follow-up and Support and great staff (accommodations are at the Home like clinic) 6. Dr and most staff speak English, 7. VERY reasonable price!
AMAZING place!
More detail: I had been researching plastic surgery quite a bit, and had gotten some ‘bids’ around the world. Did some planning work toward Mexico City or Puerto Vallarta area… Tijuana was too much money really and risk of getting hack shop due to overcrowded with ‘surgeons’ seemed high. Also spent considerable time ‘planning’ to go to Bolivia (if you have searched much, you know the place). Then, last minute-ish I was needed in Texas for a grandchild birth. Being from Alaska, any travel ‘outside’ is a big deal, and I like doing as much as I can while there. I searched a bit for plastic surgeons in Texas, found Juarez on map, did some relatively unproductive on-line searches (nothing like Tijuana where 100 plus places show on a search), once some surgeons were dug up, I nearly always got responses that I’d have to be there to get a bid (even though I had lots of pictures). Got nowhere-ish. BUT I am tenacious, and I had already done my pre-surgery blood work, ‘just in case’ I needed it if I decided to head further south while outside. After the grand baby was born I drove 6 hours to El Paso to just check it out in person, searched Craigslist for an interpreter (she was under cleaning services or something, but my search was for bilingual). Turned out she knew a gal in El Paso she thought could help, we drove there – the gal checked me out (free) and said she knew a great surgeon across the bridge / border in Juarez (Yes!) – she called the Dr, and they said ‘come on over’ right away! I had never been to Juarez or El Paso before, but I am a brave sort who doesn't mind doing things alone, not afraid of other people in the world, ever – and don’t trust the hype of news and scare tactics (really, eye to eye – we are all mothers, sons, daughters, etc). But I did not know my way around at all, and (believe it or not) my Mexican born interpreter was ‘afraid’ to go across with me (feared not being let back across); so, I parked my car and walked across alone, got a cab (slight troubles), and WOW. Dr Olivas Reception was excellent and the clinic sent the cab away pretty quick (cool) – since they would handle taking me back, etc. I wanted to get a tummy tuck, facelift, and arm lift, maybe a breast lift. I had NO Appointment and it was after 6PM by the time I got there... Dr checked me out, looked at my great bloodwork results, gave me great prices (!) and said she could get started the next day(!), but wanted me to stay for at least a week or 2 so she could ‘stage’ the different procedures…. And not to worry, I would/could stay there at the clinic (which was obviously a nice large home in a previous life), they would give me rides and help schedule some dental and eye laser surgery while there in MX too (at my request, I figured I’d make the most of the trip!). She wanted to do some other surgery things too (having seen me)… and I told her I’d consider it (again, price was amazing – and now I didn't have to worry about added costs of accommodations or other things I was budgeting for, since it was included). I imagine some of this might have been because I was so far from home. Had I been from a place a few hours away maybe it wouldn't have all been so fabulously and quickly arranged!
I did a suicide trip back to San Angelo (where my hunny and stuff was) and then back to Juarez, 2 days later instead of next day. Called the clinic to refer to a hotel for my hunny to stay at – was told not to worry, he could stay with me there at the clinic (Unexpected Bonus, how much? Nothing more!). Having been on the ‘other side’ a couple of days before, we decided to drive across and have our car there – and staff met us at the crossing bridge to guide us to the clinic (located in a secured gated community by the way). FYI, if you fly into El Paso they can meet you at Bridge or in some cases at the airport, since many folks travel back and forth as a daily routine.
This was when I first saw the ‘room’ we were to stay in (NICE, big, with private bath, see pics). The surgery rooms were below in the walk out basement (also nice, see pics). She started with the longest hardest procedure that night – so as to have me in her sights longer for that recovery as well. Turned out there were no other out of town folks getting surgery (sometimes other customers would come and go during day, or out surgery), so we had the huge house to ourselves most of the time (with keys to come and go). There was also some nursing staff that would stay after each of my procedures for a night or two in one of the extra rooms - keeping up the meds and cleaning, wrapping, etc. –taking very good care of me! After a couple of days recovery and monitoring (with meds, some via IV), the doctor did the next procedures. And in the meantime she talked me into breast implants! (yeah, really! I never wanted something so ‘flashy’ as implanted breasts, but she assured me they would be natural shape and not too big, and good grief the price was good!). I contemplated size. I am short (5’) and relatively small stature…. So I thought “B”, but she (and my hunny, who thought I didn't need anything at all B4 arrival) took great pains to convince me a “C” would do well (I actually was a C when I was a teenager, decades ago). And so a breast implant was added on despite all my hesitations – But I will admit that after that procedure, when I took a shower I cried because they were too big! I told her I wanted her to take them back out! But everyone managed to assure me they would ‘drop’ and not be too big once it settled, FYI she does something magical on implants (which is another reason they talked me into it) and I have NO SCARING from the implants, she somehow gets it all in a tiny cut in the aerola border with teeny bandaid tape/stitches as the only short-lived evidence…As an aside, she does charge for the hand delivered compression garments… but you can bring your own, or go shopping and buy your own while there (if you are up for it). Also during surgery she decided to just do Lipo on my upper arms – instead of arm lift, and a tiny undiscussed nose tip thing. Just trust her – they were both good decisions (as were the C’s now that it has been a few months). In fact, my own mom swears all I got was a breast lift (because the size is discreet). There were a couple of other things done, but all was good in her and her staff’s hands and care! And no matter what at all times it was “no worries, stay as long as you want or need to”.
Also included is Internet on-site, there is cell service (mostly) on our At&T Walmart Go-Phones, and there were some oxygen injection treatments in the abdomen included to help heal (?) – which were painful; and much much more. Staff took my hunny anywhere he wanted to go (and I if I was up for it) cause my hunny gets lost getting out of a wet paper bag! And once we got me mobilized again they would lead and direct and help with absolutely anything and everything! Never more charges. They took me to appointments they made for me with other doctors and went in and interpreted and waited with me, (dental and Lasik) and even found me someone to do my much needed nail fill. No additonal charges, always overly generous and cool. We did get our own food… but there are groceries nearby and one needed only be able to ‘scoot along at a snails pace’ to walk to Barrigas – a great restaurant that would also deliver if desired (located just outside the housing area gates). Full kitchen was available to use anytime, as well as laundry (though we were missing our dirty laundry sometimes, as the cleaning gal that came by Daily (included) took it and washed and folded it, along with changing all the sheets/towels, etc. But if we beat her to the punch, or had gross stuff I couldn't stand someone else messing with, we washed and dried our own sometimes too - I am telling you, if you are a regular person who does not need or do 5 star glamorous environments, this place is AWESOME down home personal care like no other! We did tip our night nurse pretty good, and offered gas money to others after they ran us all over the place… Be Kind, and everyone is kind!
This was all in Late Nov early Dec 2014. I am not very good at following directions on every little thing… I did some things I was told not to do (sleeping on wrong side, not wearing compression as long/much as they said, sitting balled up instead of laying too much, continued smoking too much, etc.) and for whatever reason one of my breasts developed an internal hardening of scar tissue around the implant (or something like that, I can’t recall the name of it) and it was seeping liquid. I was back home by then of course, and went to my Dr… long story short; It was going to be a nightmare (and bankroll) to ‘fix’ at home. I got with Dr Olivia and went back to her in April 2015 to clean out and put in a new one… while there she saw that my tummy tuck incision area was developing a ridge of scar tissue too (that wouldn’t let me stand fully upright)- I thought it was fine and just part of the ‘process’… anyway, I paid $800 for a new implant (she wanted that vs cleaning off and reinserting the old one), but while there for a week or so, she also fixed a couple of things on my face that weren’t perfect, and scrapped the scar tissue from the tummy tuck, stayed there with hunny the whole time, and wow… no charges beyond the $800 for the new implant. Same awesome people! Same awesome care! Outstanding follow-up and follow through on her work!
Couple of details that may be important to you: She uses a deep local pain medication for surgeries, I was NEVER “put all the way under”! Which I LOVED… I don’t like the idea of going “under” and recovery is ridiculous as well as cost. The deep local stuff is AWESOME (to/for me), very little to no nausea, quick recover, lasts forever (I still have some places that I can tell are desensitized). For drainage (for tummy tuck) she uses plastic tubing with little holes cut in it and Maxi Pads over the drainage areas… if you aren’t careful (and I wasn’t) they can pull out easily and/or can go back in the drainage hole… both of which happened to me, and both of which are a pain in the behind to ‘fix’, but I know I caused it with my rough shod ways. I am going to go back for Ablative resurfacing on my face for acne scars and deep wrinkles that the face lift didn’t fix, but she is making me wait for a year after the face lift. She always has me wait a bit between procedures to make sure all is good first.
I should also tell you I smoke – a lot! I do not follow the rules on diet either (I eat like no other, and love bacon and butter and such ‘horrible’ poisons as that). But, I am super healthy otherwise… a regular workhorse type – and despite being in my 50’s now, I can work some 20 year old men into the ground, I have low blood pressure and all the good cholesterols and none of the bad, etc (blood work is good, though iron deficient sometimes). I say this because I heal very quickly and well too… The Dr was amazed how well, given my age, and bad habits that are supposed to make healing difficult. She was impressed with how there was almost no scarring left in April from the face work, etc. Done in late Nov / early Dec 2014. But, I think it is because she is so great! I think any and everyone who is good hearted should go here!
But I realize and appreciate there are many who are afraid of other people/countries and other things, I also realize many might not go for the 'local' pain thing, and might not appreciate the way I did having a doc who will do so many things in one trip. BUT I DO APPRECIATE those things... so spare me the "I would never..." talk or the "Should not have...." talk. There is nothing I would change about any of it - except maybe having it be closer to home. :-)
Make your own choices of course! And I am happy happy happy with mine.
