Not enough tissue removed - bump still present

ORIGINAL POST

In December 2013 I went to Dr. Michael J. Duffy...

$4,600
In December 2013 I went to Dr. Michael J. Duffy and Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery Center, Inc. to have the dorsal bump removed from the bridge of my nose. At our consultation, Dr. Duffy assured me this was an “easy fix” and he also suggested some work on the tip of my nose as well, which I agreed to, however I stressed that my main concern was the removal of the bump. I scheduled and had my surgery on 1/15/14 at a cost of $4600.

A few days after surgery I returned to Dr. Duffy’s office to have the tape removed from my nose. I was concerned because when the tape was removed, the bump was still visible. Dr. Duffy assured me that this was swelling and the bump would go down in approximately.

Approximately 1 month later, I returned to the office for my scheduled follow up. I was again very concerned because the bump that was to be removed was still there and, in my opinion, as prominent as it was before Dr. Duffy operated on me. The bump felt hard, like bone, just like it did before surgery. Dr. Duffy reiterated that the bump was probably just swelling and would go down with time. Dr. Duffy also told me that I must give my nose 6 months to fully heal before he would know for sure and any revision could be discussed.

With the bump still as visible as it was prior to surgery, I called to schedule my 6 month follow up so we could discuss why the bump was still there and what needed to be done to correct this. I received an appointment date of 7/15/14. The day before the appointment, Dr. Duffy’s office called to cancel the appointment and told me that Dr. Duffy didn’t want to see me until 12 months after my surgery. This was the first that I had heard of a 12 month timeframe. At this point I felt like I have been given nothing but excuse after excuse since I had surgery. I told the nurse that I wanted to keep my appointment because I was upset that the bump was still there and I wanted to speak to Dr. Duffy.

When Dr. Duffy walked in the room the following day for my appointment I felt he was annoyed that I was even there. When we began speaking and I told him how disappointed I looked the same as I did before surgery I felt that Dr. Duffy became very defensive. He constantly referred to the bump that was left on my nose as “minor” and “insignificant”, which upset me considering I feel as if I look the same as I did before surgery. With the attitude and mannerisms that he had, he made me feel that he did not care that I paid $4600 and went through surgery only to look the same as I did before. I questioned why I was told that a revision could be possible at 6 months and now I was being told a revision wasn’t possible until 12 months. Dr. Duffy seemed to become irritated and he told me that he was not going to allow me to pin him down on a timeframe.

When asked what his plan was to fix the bump Dr. Duffy did state that his plan was to go back in for additional work some time after the 12 month mark had passed. He also stated that per his Revision Policy additional fees would be owed by me for the revision. At this point, based upon the fact that the bump was not corrected in the initial surgery and based upon the way I feel I was treated after the initial surgery I, personally, did not feel confident that Dr. Duffy could correct what he did not do in the initial surgery or feel comfortable with him operating on me again.

Following my surgery with Dr. Duffy I have sought 2nd opinions from 2 different Plastic Surgeons in the Jacksonville area. Both have stated the same thing: the bump on my nose is bone, not swelling, and is there to stay. No amount of time is going to cause it to change. Both have indicated that not enough tissue was removed in the initial surgery which is why the bump is still there. I now have to have revision surgery to correct the same issue I went to see Dr. Duffy for, which I didn’t budget for both monetarily or emotionally.

Looking back on my experience with Dr. Duffy, I should have seen a red flag because I requested to see before and after photos of Dr. Duffy’s work and was told he didn’t provide this because every patient’s results vary. I have never encountered a plastic surgeon who refused to provide photos of their work.

I realize that the results of plastic surgery are often subjective, and beauty is also in the eyes of the beholder which is why I have included before and after pictures with this post and invite you to make your own conclusions.

Based upon the way I feel I was treated following my procedure with Dr. Duffy I will not be recommending him to anyone

Hi. I know how you feel at this point and I see from your photos that your profile didn't change aftet surgery. You're lucky that at least you don't look worse post surgery. I totally agree with you to not let this surgeon operate on your nose again. Actually I would run away from him even if the revision was free. I am happy that you sought a second opinion and confident your nose can be fixed. Good luck with revision and please keep us posted. Thanks.
Thank you! I just had my revision Wednesday so I am excited to see the results. I feel so confident in the new surgeons skills and I will be sure to post reviews and pics when I get my cast off.
Happy to hear your revision was a success. I look forward tp reading your updates.
Yes I agree your nose wasn't altered much. :( I'm sorry u went through all this how frustrated u must feel. At least your price wasn't exorbitant and I hope u can make your dream a reality still!
Saddened to hear about your disappointing results. Yes, from the photos it does not look like your nose has changed much. I would not go back to the doctor for the revision even if there was no charge. Thanks for your honest review and good luck for your revision!
Thank you for sharing your experience on RealSelf! If you'd like to share your revision experience you can go here to do that and rate your surgeon.
Sorry about your bad experience with the first surgeon. You are not crazy because obviously there wasn't much change in the nose after the surgery. He should of at least owned up to his mistake and worked something out with you about the money. (in my opinion) But don't sweat it! A lot of surgeons are very cocky and confident, even if they made a mistake or in your case didn't change much. Anyways I heard you got your revision and thats awesome :) Please keep us updated, i am so excited for you :) No worries girl!!
