Hi there, I am a married mother of 2 small boys who never stop. I separated from the Navy about 4 months ago, and can finally move forward with this process. I have been thinking about it for years but was unable due to being active duty. I have always been bigger but never over weight until the last 5-6 years. I am active and workout but the pounds just keep coming, I know it is my eating habits. I already have my referral from my PCM, I see the general surgeon on June 2 and then will see from there. Any advice or insight would be more then welcome. Thanks so much.

Hi there, welcome and thanks for sharing your journey with us!
Congrats on taking the first step, which is sometimes the hardest. This isn't an easy journey, but if you're determined to make it work, then for a lot of people, myself included, it's completely worth it.
Do you have any idea of when your surgery may occur?

HI Kristy, The dr. said if i stay on track and knock out all the pre-req's it will be in oct sometime. I cant wait I just made the cut but i dont think i could handle it if i got any bigger and i need the help to lose the lbs i already have. Have you already done this? what is are your thoughts?

Yes, I had my surgery last September. October's not too bad, you have to wait a few months, but you'll be busy doing all of your pre-op testing, etc. Did you doctor tell you how long your liquid diet would be? It differs from person to person.

he really didn't tell me anything beside that he will approve me and get started, i work with tri-care and this will be done at the base hospital so i don't really know if they are too different then civilian doctors...

I'm sure as time gets closer they'll give you more info about when to start your liquid diet, etc. The liquid diet is designed to shrink your liver, because your liver sits in front of your stomach. They need it as small as possible, to A) make it safer and B) be able to get to your stomach laparoscopically.

i have alot of the appointments in the next week or two and i should know alot more, I am going through tri-care and everything can be completed at the Naval hospital so i am thinking maybe it is going to be different then out in town... i am beyond ready for this. thanks for the info and any advice you may have :)

Hi, Kristy! I have to start a lig diet a week before and after surg, other then that i will be taught how to eat again and how much of what and all that fun stuff. It seems like it will be very tough but I am going to make it happen!

Hiya, I am nine days out today :) and it's going great. I have my staples out tomorrow and then the first visit with the dietician on Thursday. Actually operative pain has been very little, I didn't need anything after 48 hrs but the gas is uncomfortable. I'm just learning how to eat again, and drinking all the time. Definitely worth it!

Well starting all my meetings/stomach view thing... received all my blood work, it looks great but I am low on Vit D. Still on track for a Oct date. This is getting more real and I am getting more nervous... I knew it was a lifestyle change, but it is very intimidating... SO many diet restrictions. Any advice on how to make these changes and stick to them? On the plus I made it one week without POP!

The good thing is that post-op it gets easier to make the changes. You won't be hungry and certain foods will make you sick, such as high fat foods. It is definitely hard, but you have to prepare. Before surgery I threw out all of the foods that got me in trouble: chips, candy, cookies, soda and we just stopped buying them. You really have declutter your pantry and fill it with all of the foods you can and should be eating.
