I wish I would have known about realself.com before my PRK procedure. My experience was certainly a challenge. To the best of my ability, I’m going to attempt to recount the experience because I am confident it will help someone who is contemplating the surgery.
August 8th – I had a consult with LasikPlus who came highly recommended by several individuals. The staff was very friendly and I instantly felt like a close friend or family. The only complaint I has was that the onsite Optometrist was very new, had very broken English, and seemed to be a bit clueless. The staff did warn me that she new & she certainly did not deliver confidence or knowledge. Nonetheless, the overall experience was great and the optometrist recommended Lasik. Following the appointment, my boyfriend convinced me to go ahead and schedule the procedure as soon as possible. I’m a planner when it comes to finances & he is a doer when it comes to things we desire. So I scheduled the procedure for the same week, Friday!
August 12th – Procedure day, I was extremely excited. The day before I came down with a UTI and contacted the office for direction; I wasn’t sure if I would be okay to proceed. The surgeon called me back pretty quick and asked a few questions and said I would okay. She was extremely friendly and pleasant. I arrived at the office and was immediately taken back to a holding room where they informed me the surgeon decided that PRK would be more beneficial for my eyes. I knew the recovery time would be longer but I was not prepared to take additional time off. The surgeon apologized for not letting me know the evening before as it did not register that I was the one with the change in procedure, honest mistake. I contacted my boss and asked for permission to have a few additional days off. We proceeded with the surgery. The procedure itself was a breeze! The tech escorted me to the table (I couldn’t see) and got me situated. Dr. Alban, calming and therapeutically, coached me through the entire processes; maybe 10 minutes. When I sat up, I could see my daughter and boyfriend’s face through the observation window and I immediately began to tear up. For the first time in my life I could see. Dr. Alban examined my eyes and off I went.
Week 1: The first 3 days I slept & slept. Light was excruciating to my eyes and sleep gave me relief from the discomfort. I had a follow up appointment five days following the procedure & my progress was astounding. Vison was GREAT but improvement was there.
Week 2-4: I work as an administration assistant and am on a computer all day long. The PRK treatment made work very challenging. I was told by week 3 or 4 I would level out and things would get better. The headaches were horrible and I had to blow my resolution up on my computer pretty high. By the end of week 4 things still weren’t great.
30 Day Check Up: So my vision had overcorrected and it was driving me nuts. The technicians reassured me that some people just take longer. They encouraged me to keep drops in my eyes and take vitamin c. Within 5 day of my checkup my eyes finally leveled out and my vision was great. I’m currently at 54 days and I would do the procedure again in a heartbeat.
Words of Wisdom:
1. Take Vitamin C from the start
2. Have your caretaker fill your prescription while you’re waiting for surgery. You will need it.
3. Be prepared to be out of work at least one week & to struggle with your vision for 3-5 weeks. Inform your boss of your visual limitation prior scheduling your surgery.
