I am a 35 year old mother of 4 and I lost 100 lbs with diet and exercise. I am 5’3” and weigh 112 lbs. On July 9, 2015 I had an extended tummy tuck, breast lift, and arm lift with Dr. Basu. (I did not have liposuction or breast implants.) My procedures were combined into one 8 hour long surgery that was performed by Dr. Basu at his in office surgical facility. My first post op appointment was the following week, and the appointment was only with his nurse. Dr. Basu did not bother to see me at all. To that end, all of my follow up visits were scheduled with his nursing staff. Unfortunately this substandard level of care is standard for his office, and at each visit I would wait over an hour and eventually be rushed in and out only to visit with a nurse. Unbeknownst to me, Dr. Basu left the country right around that time, and I began experiencing wound separation, redness surrounding the wounds, and oozing. None of the post op instructions we received covered this issue, and I was terrified. When my husband called, he was informed by the answering service that Dr. Basu was out of the country. When we had the answering service page Dr. Basu, he was agitated that I disturbed him during his vacation and patronizing when speaking to me. He brushed off every concern and said that I should not have had him paged. He further said that if I was that concerned, I should just go to the ER. He then prescribed valium for anxiety. When I did get into his office to address the wound separation, his nurse kept telling me to put betadine on it. The betadine was not aiding in the healing process, and in fact it just exacerbated the wound separation. Dr. Basu was still not available to see me at this point, and after adamantly explaining the issues with the betadine to his nurse numerous times, I saw an associate of Dr. Basu's - a different doctor at a different practice - who agreed betadine was not helpful and showed me how to do wet to dry dressings. The efficiency with which this doctor saw me, and the extensiveness of his instructions and care were a night and day difference from Dr. Basu. This doctor went on to discuss nutrition and wet to dry wound care in detail, which was incredibly helpful. While I showed immediate improvement after stopping the betadine and beginning wet to dry dressings, my wounds had been untreated / mistreated early on, so they remained separated and oozing with large black scabs for several months. I truly feel that if my wound separation would have been properly addressed by Dr. Basu in the beginning, I would not have the dark large scars in those areas that I have now. During this time I was told that treating the scars would be a simple revision and not to worry about it. When everything finally did heal, I went back. Not only to discuss scar revision, but the unimpressive outcome of the surgery, which I will detail by procedure here. 1. Extended Tummy Tuck: I have “dog ears" on each end of the incision, with wrinkled loose skin surrounding them. I also have a 3" muffin top around my hips/outer back when I wear jeans. For reference I have a 26" waist. A 3" overhang on each side is a *lot* on a petite frame. This amount of overhang is due to the fact that my extended tummy tuck was not extended enough -- the overhang starts exactly where the incision ends. If the incision had been about 3" longer on each side, this would not be an issue. I expected that a good surgeon would customize the incision line based on the patient needs, rather than making a blanket one size fits all cut, but that was not the case. Also, when I bend forward, I have "udders" - extra skin that hangs down 1-2" from my stomach in wrinkly vertical folds. This should absolutely not be the case after a tummy tuck, especially after the price paid. In short, I still feel uncomfortable with my midsection, and my results could have been significantly better.2. Breast Lift: I had a lift. I did not have a reduction. I did however go from a size 34DD to a size 34B. I suspect that when Dr. Basu was cutting, he perhaps cut away too much on one side and had to remove from the other side to even them out, leaving both breasts significantly smaller. Again, this is only speculation, but it the only reasonable explanation I can think of. I have requested my records for this very reason but been given the runaround consistently. They have mailed me pictures, but not records. My breasts are just as sad and deflated as they were before. They still hang and droop. My areolas were removed and replaced to higher location on the breasts, but the breasts themselves are no different, other than significantly smaller. To intensify this issue, my areolas were not reduced in size the way my breasts were, so I now have disproportionately large areolas on my downsized deflated breasts. Also of note, implants were discussed briefly at my initial consult, but Dr. Basu said I didn't need them and that they would just weigh my breasts down since they were already large. 3. Arm Lift: The scars on my arms were of primary concern at my initial consult and discussed more than any other topic. Dr. Basu assured me he uses a technique that places the scars where they won't be seen from behind when standing with arms down. This is absolutely not the case -- He missed that mark by a long shot. Not only that, but I have "dog ears" at the end of my incisions on my elbows. Just like on the tummy tuck, he didn't take quite enough. The elbow bulges are visible with or without long sleeves on, much more on the left than the right, and make me incredibly uncomfortable. About 9 months ago I went in to discuss these concerns with Dr. Basu. I waited for over an hour and I didn't even get to see him until really pushing to. When he finally came in he spent just a few minutes really being condescending. Here’s where it gets really bad… He said the extra skin was from me losing weight after surgery. Y'all, I lost ***7 lbs***. Yes, SEVEN. If you're surgeon believes that a weight loss of seven measly pounds is going to cause you to have udders after surgery, RUN. If your surgeon is too arrogant to admit his shortcomings and tries to make you believe something this ridiculous, RUN. I expressed my dissatisfaction and requested my records. I then left and cried in my car. I just feel like it could have been better. He could have been better. My results could have been better. The whole thing could have been better. Dr. Basu did end up calling me on the phone and apologizing after that disastrous appointment. He urged me to come back in so he could spend more time re-evaluating my concerns. We discussed revisions in more detail over the phone, and he offered to do it for a reduced fee. I did feel better, but the cost was still very high just to fix all of the things that should not have been issues to begin with, and I didn't want to rush into another surgery. I told his office that I would think about it and get back with them in several months, and he assured me he would take care of me when that time came.A few months ago, I started calling his office to move forward and make the do-over appointment to discuss revision. I called 1-2x a month. Each time I was told someone would call me back, but no one ever did. Finally 2 weeks ago, I spoke to the office manager, and she told me the visit would cost $100. I tried to explain to her that the visit was a do-over because they botched the last one, and she said someone would have to look into it and call me back. I explained that no one had called me back in all the times I had called the last few months, and she said they would call me this time. To date, I have heard nothing back.In some ways I love my new body. In other ways I feel even more uncomfortable with it than I did before, mostly due to the fact that my surgeon did a substandard job. Bottom line, meet with several doctors, even if you have to eat a few consult fees, and don't settle until you find one you truly love and trust.

Get legal counsel, outrageous malpractice!

Thank you. I'm not interested in a lawsuit, I just want it fixed. Dr. Basu is highly rated and incredibly talented, but he he is human. Mistakes are okay, but being unwilling to fix them is not. I am still holding out hope that he will make this right.

I understand how it feels to just want the end result and satisfaction. I am 2-1/2 wks out from a modified TT, lipo, hernia repair. Too soon to tell if the results will be as projected. I just would be leary of a doctor that wasn't available to me when I had issues or had attitude when I finally did reach him. That being said, I know that most of us here spend our allotted amount on initial surgery so putting your trust in this doctor is the best thing you can do. He should do the revisions as a courtesy. All PS want their patients happy and want their work showcased in a positive manner, word of mouth is important in elective surgery.

Oh wow, it's sad that you had to go through all this and he doesn't even care. Thank you for sharing and exposing this unprofessional so called surgeon. If I were you, I'd seek legal advice immediately. He should not get away with this. You are the voice of many ladies who may have gone through the same experience and were too scared to speak up and those to come. Be brave and let him know, he can't get away with doing wrong by people. Get legal advice asap

After reading many reviews on here is seems there is not much of a gray area with Dr. Basu. Most patients love him and have an absolutely wonderful experience, but those of us that experience complications or need revisions all share similar experiences of being brushed off, patronized, shut out, and feeling swindled in the end.
My hope at this time is that this is not the end. I hold out hope that Dr. Basu might again call me himself to make this right, or facilitate an appointment for me with his associate to discuss the revisions. While I am dissatisfied with the overall care I received, I do appreciate that Dr. Basu took those measures in the past and hope that he might do the same going forward.
I will update here accordingly.
