Very Glad I Did This - Houston, TX

Look to the ears, ladies...and gentlemen!

I read somewhere to judge the skills of a facial plastic surgeon by how your ears look after surgery. My incisions were virtually undetectable after surgery and by 2 weeks out I could wear a ponytail. No one in my family knows that I had the facelift...just that I look relaxed and refreshed.

I've lost quite a bit of weight in the past few years, so people think my face shrunk from that, but I was very aware of my turkey neck and wore my hair forward to cover it. Three weeks after the surgery, I met with people I knew, and no one notices.

As a patient who has worked in a hospital setting, I really wanted a surgeon who had an ENT background. Dr. Sturm O'Brien had that, plus she completed an extra year of specialized facial plastic surgery training. I was traveling to Houston for body contouring surgery and researched different facial plastic surgeons in the area.

I wanted someone who would be with me over the years if I decided to go back in 10-15 years. I kept returning back to Dr. Sturm O'Brien. She was young, highly intelligent, skilled and there was something about her that I trusted. I'm a very good judge of character, and after meeting her, was confident in my decision to move forward. Also, professionals that I interacted with...other surgeons, nurses and ophthalmologists...had only positive things to say about her.

After consultation with her, I made the decision to go forward with a complete facelift, endoscopic brow lift and lower bleph. Each person's consult is individualized...that's why I didn't put pricing info up above...it would also depend on the number of OR hours you would need plus anesthesiologist hours.

I am adding some photos, but I'm a private person; I hope they help others. All of the photos are right after a shower (some soap suds if you look carefully) and with no makeup. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

I also must add that the staff was great, especially Lisa, the nurse I saw most often and Linda, the fantastic patient coordinator.

That is a great point about the incisions by the ears. Mine are inside of my ear, not in front, so they are undetectable. I have seen some plastic surgeons do the most awful incisions, from a long line down the side of the face in front of the ears, to incisions that run in the hairline along the sides of the forehead and around the ears, to those which then continue around the back of the head. Yikes! You look great!!!!

Your incisions do look great! Congratulations on a wonderful outcome.

Thank you! It's gotten better over the past months...I went to a hairdresser and was wondering if she would notice anything...I do have long hair and the incisions that went into my hairline caused a couple of shorter tufts to grow out on the back underneath; they're about 3-4" long and the rest is much longer. The hairdresser pulled them up when cutting and said "what's ip with these...don't let your daughter play with your hair". She didn't notice scars.

Things that were helpful...

Mary131
To reduce swelling after the surgery, I slept for the first 2 weeks in a recliner, to keep my head elevated. I made sure to eat very low sodium, high quality foods, with a bit more protein for healing. One other thing that I think was helpful is that I drank a lot of water with either fresh lime or lemon juice.

I did initially have more swelling on my left side, but that dissipated after the first week. I had very little bruising and I think that Dr. Sturm O'Brien has a gentle touch; for sure during followup appointments, of which there were many the first 2 weeks.

Congrats on weight loss. You look very young. If you don't mind me asking, how old are you? Any before pics? Before facelift? Before weight loss?
August 19, 2014
Thank you for your comments! I'm currently 51 yo. I'll see of I can dig up any before pics later. I tended to avoid the camera always.
August 19, 2014
Wow. I seriously would have put you as 30-something, tops...

Congrats on Everything.... More photos???

Thank you...I'm happy. I really am having a hard time digging up an old photo. I'm either blocking my face well with my hair or am obscured. I was always so aware of my neck in photos. I'll see if I can find one on my husband's computer later.

Gah...I can't find any pics to post. I always deleted ones I hated...and kept the ones that had hair covering the area or blocked by others. Sorry.

Tomorrow will be 2 weeks for me! My incisions are not noticeable either! I am still sleeping in the recliner and as you low sodium food, protein and lots of water with fresh lemons, seems that we went to the same Doctor LOL! I had endoscopy brow lift too, can you please tell me if your forehead was still numb at 2 weeks? Congratulations, your incisions look great!
September 26, 2014
Hi there, I'm glad things are going well for you! I didn't have the forehead numbness at 2 weeks, but I am now just over 3 months post op and I can feel slight numbness in front of my ears down to the back of my jaw. I don't usually notice it unless I'm thinking about it...if that makes sense :) Yes, the recliner was my best friend. I read your story. It's amazing that they fit the chin implant in that small cut. I hope your husband is now feeling better. Take care!

Finally found a before photo...

My daughter took this on my phone...this is about 2 months prior to surgery. My neck really, really, really bothered me.

Things are still going well. No regrets.

Everything looks great! I'm so happy for you. What was the cost for your procedure? Thank you.
March 16, 2015
Hi there, I really don't like to put up costs, not to be secretive, but knowing that each facelift and other facial procedure is individualized for the patient. Depending on your needs, skin, time needed under general anesthesia, etc. For my facelift, neck lift, endoscopic brow lift, lower bleph, which included application of platelet rich plasma spun from my own blood (I hope I'm describing this correctly) to help with healing, operating room costs, board certified anesthesiologist for general anesthesia plus one night hospital stay, the cost was ~24k. I researched...a lot. My daughters call me " the research queen". It's your face. It's the first thing people see. There's no hiding a poor result. It was imperative to me to trust my surgeons skills implicitly. Once I made my decision, I was so calm and had no worries, all the way up to the time she was marking me up right before I went into the operating room. I knew I was in good hands.

Beautiful! Your close ups DO look like that of a teenager! You can see in both before, & after pics that you're naturally beautiful already☺️
May 13, 2015
Thank you...that was kind of you to say! My kids keep me very humble :)
May 17, 2015
Haha you're very welcome, & we do the same with my parents, but it's all true! I'm happy to tell you my parents mom in her 60's , & dad is over 70 ( he had us a bit late;) both look younger. My mom generally gets that she's about 50, & my dad late 50's, & couldn't be happier to see that my mom's starting us on healthy skin care young mixed with luck of the draw in the gene pool/ or maybe as I've heard our Mediterranean/Swedish background, lol, seems to be passing on to my brother, & I. Can I ask what do you think is the best procedure to have if you can only choose to do one thing? Thanks again for reading beautiful lady
May 18, 2015
That is difficult to answer. I would say the best procedure for you would be the one that bothers you the most. For me, if I had needed to limit it to one procedure only, it would have been my neck lift; my neck is what bothered me most. I do not like the idea of having to keep continually maintaining procedures with injectables. That's just me personally; I have nothing against them for others. I use a good sunscreen at all times and maintain good cleansing and moisturizing. I would rather have surgery, then not have to think about my face for years until it bothered me again. I wanted to have the surgery, then live life. Good luck! Are you looking into this for yourself or your parents?
April 3, 2017
My neck is what bothers me the most too. I'm not seeing any before pics of you on here or even any full face after pics. I'm wondering if I'm just not doing something right , or if you've removed them. I totally get it .. I abhor photos of myself and avoid them as much as possible .
April 9, 2017
Yes, I did remove them after I had them up about 2 years...

Thank you. Good luck to you. You need to make your own decision on who you feel would be best for you, but I recommend you at least make an appointment with Dr. Sturm for a consult. I am still happy and about 3 years out now.
