Over the past two years I’ve really turned my health around, losing a lot of weight. But the persistent fat and lose skin on my chest weren’t going anywhere. I’d been told by a doctor several years earlier that I had a classic case of gynecomastia, but I’d always been so overweight that I never thought about doing anything about it. It had always been a huge source of embarrassment for me since puberty. Now that I was focused on weight loss, I made a promise to myself that if I could get to my goal weight, I’d start looking into gynecomastia surgery. When I started the process, I was at 240 lbs., down from 312 lbs., and when I actually did the surgery I was at around 220 lbs. I went from a 48 in chest down to 43 in chest post-surgery.
If you’re thinking about it, I’d say go for it. It’s completely life changing. I’m able to wear shirts that actually fit me and look good. I’ve taking up running (something that was really embarrassing previously with all that fat bouncing around). My confidence has definitely increased overall.
But here’s the catch: the surgery really really hurts and it’s going to take you out of commission for several days if not a whole week, and you’ll be in lots of pain for weeks after. My experience may be different than yours though. I had an extreme case that required nipple grafting and I was under for surgery nearly 6 hours. I stayed overnight afterwards, and I highly recommend it. Also, it would be really nice to have someone to help you out for the first week. To give you a sense, I had surgery Friday, then was back at work by Tuesday, but I have a desk job with no physical exertion at all, and even that was completely exhausting. I would come home and just collapse every day. It would have been really nice to have that week off work.
