Earlier this summer, I went to the movies with a friend. The ticket clerk asked if I wanted a senior ticket. I’m 53. My friends keep telling me that she probably just saw my grey hair and made an assumption, because there’s no way I look 65. But it hurt. A lot. I had decided to quit coloring my hair because I’ve been putting chemicals on my head since I was 30. But grey hair or not, I wasn’t ready to look 65. So two months ago, I had a bleph, and face/neck lift.
Dr. Hayes’s sutures are amazing. Tiny little stitches in my eyelids and after only two months, you can barely see the scars near my temples. Everything is healing nicely. I’m so pleased with the results already, and I know it will only get better.
I wasn’t sure when I would be able to fly home. I had the surgery on a Tuesday. On Thursday I had a follow-up appointment to take out the staples and the drains. (I was very, very stressed about the drain removal, but I barely felt them come out.) The next Monday he removed most of the stitches, then on Wed he removed the rest. I was planning to fly home on Friday, but since the stitches were out, I changed my flight and left on Wednesday. Yes, I was still very bruised and swollen, but I didn’t care. I just walked through the airport like nothing was wrong and figured people would think I was in an accident or something. I found that the more confident I was, the less uncomfortable people around me were.
I have to say, I was surprised at how long the swelling remained. I am lucky because I work from home, so I didn’t have to be around a lot of people. But if you don’t want anyone to know about your procedure, you almost have to plan on three to four weeks before all of the swelling is gone. I also have a lot of hair, so none of my scars are noticeable, but if you have really short hair, it would be impossible for people not to notice. The scar under my chin is still pretty red, but no one can see it unless I tilt my head back. And there are areas that are still numb, but that is normal and will take time for feeling to return.
I’m so happy I had the surgery. I had told my friends I was having the surgery on my eyelids, but I didn’t tell them about the face/neck lift. They had no idea. They just kept saying how good I look, how refreshed, less sleepy.
Update: I’m four months out now, and still getting compliments. I still have some numbness under my chin and in front of my ears, but it continues to get better. I’m very pleased with my results and highly recommend Dr. Hays.

Dr. Austin Hays in Hillsboro, Oregon performed the surgery. Although I live in another state, we had an initial conversation through Google chat. I made the arrangements with his staff and spent a week in Portland for the surgery and follow-up. From the initial consultation, through the surgery and follow-up, he continues to impress me. He’s very personable, not intimidating, and genuinely cares. I asked that he not talk me through the procedures because I’m very squeamish, but I’m sure he would have provided as much detail as I wanted. After my surgery, he called my caregiver a few times, even on the weekend, to make sure I was doing ok. When I experienced some nausea, he was quick to prescribe some medication. He's very meticulous, and I definitely recommend him.
