Make plans to arrive 30 minutes prior to the scheduled time of your procedure unless instructed otherwise.
POST-OPERATIVE MANAGEMENT AND TRANSPORTATION
If you are staying in a hotel nearby or going home, plan to have someone stay with you for the first postoperative night. Your postoperative transportation must be pre-arranged.
It is of best interest for the person responsible for your transportation to stay during the procedure. If this is not possible, the person responsible for driving you home must arrive in the department 11/2 hours after the scheduled time of your operation.
Birth control pills or must be suspended two weeks before your surgery.
If you have any birth control device or intrauterine arm (Marena IUD) please notify our office.
Smoking is NOT allowed 4 weeks before your surgery.
NOT alcoholic beverages allowed 3 days before surgery.
Do not take aspirin, aspirin products, or vitamin E for 4 weeks prior the surgery as these may promote bleeding. Also, medications containing ibuprofen may have effects similar to aspirin if taken on a regular basis just prior to your surgery.
If you are taking such medications or any other medications for pain or arthritis or anticoagulants, please notify your surgeon. All drug allergies must be noted prior to the surgery.
If you will be receiving general anesthesia, IV regional block, or monitored anesthesia, you must observe the following instructions:
The night Before Surgery
? Eat a light supper the night before surgery.
? Do not eat or drink anything after midnight, not even water.
? Do not take any drugs (medicine or alcohol) except those prescribed by your physician.
? Bathing either the night before or the morning of surgery is permitted.
? Notify your physician the day before your scheduled surgery if there any change in your physical condition (i.e. temperature, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or extreme pain).
The morning of surgery
? Do not eat or drink anything!
? Brush your teeth but do not swallow any water.
? You may apply light facial makeup if you wish, but no mascara eye shadow, eyeliner,
or false eyelashes. We recommend no makeup at all.
? Do not wear contacts lenses.
? Wear casual clothing such a jogging suit or loose-fitting clothing that buttons in front.
? Do not wear panty hose, high heels, or many layers of clothing, we ask you to have at least one Short nail without any nail polish.
? If you need a compression garment such as a girdle or a bra we can provide it, with an additional cost.
? Leave all jewelry and valuables at home.
HOME CARE AFTER SURGERY
? Before leaving you will receive verbal and written instructions for your postoperative care. Including restrictions in addition to choose specific to your procedure.
? After your surgery, have on hand easily digested foods such and ginger ale, crackers, Jell-O, and canned soups.

MEDICATIONS TO BE AVOID BEFORE SURGERY
The following drugs contain aspirin and/or have undesirable side effects that may affect your surgery (abnormal bleeding and bruising). These drugs should be avoided for two weeks prior to surgery. If you need to take something for relief of minor pain, YOU MAY TAKE TYLENOL or another “acetaminophen product”. Please let us know if you are currently taking any of these medications.

SUPPLEMENTS TO DISCONTINUE DURING THE PREOPERATIVE PERIOD
The “natural products” listed below may be beneficial for a variety of aliments, but THEIR USE AROUND THE TIME OF SURGERY MAY NOT BE DESIRABLE. Therefore, is admissible to stop taking these products to avoid problems with surgery and anesthesia. If time permits, discontinue the use of these products TWO WEEKS prior the surgery and TWO WEEKS after the surgery. Specific nutritional supplements that should be discontinued include:
Bilberry (vaccinium myrtilus)- Contain anthocyanosides, flavonoid compounds that improve visual acuidity and are important in the treatment of eye disorders. Excellent antioxidant that strengthens capillaries and collagen. Has antiplatelet activity and may inhibit clot formation.
Cayenne. (capsicum annum)- Used for GI tract disorders. Overdose may cause severe hypothermia.
Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis)- The main applications is in the relief of menstrual disorders and menstrual cramps. Often used to relieve menopausal symptoms. Activate constituent is Coumadin derivates, which may potentiate existing anticoagulant medications.
Echinacea (Exhinacea augusifolia- Immune system stimulant with anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial effects. Used of Echinacea may impact the liver when general anesthesia or certain other medications such as anabolic steroids or methotrexate are used.
Feverfew (Tanacetum paithenium)- Used for migraine headache prevention and for arthritis, rheumatic disease, and allergies. May increase bleeding, especially in patients taking certain anticlotting medications.
Fish oil capsules- Supplies important omega- 6 fatty acid, DHA, and EPA, used to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Has blood – rhinning properties.
Garlic (Allium sativum)- Garlic has vasodilator ,hypo cholesterol effects, and antiplatelet effects. May augment effect of Coumadin, warfarin, and NSAIDs, causing abnormal bleeding time.
Ginger (Zingiber officianale)- Useful as antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and ant nausea. Prophylactic for motion sickness and nv. Use of ginger may alter bleeding time. Ginger may interfere with cardiac and anticoagulant medications.
Ginkgo Biloba- One of the oldest living tree species, which can live, up to 1000 years and grow to a height of 120 feet. Used as an antioxidant and circulatory stimulant. Used for treatment of intermittent claudication, tinnitus, vertigo, memory enhancement, and sexual dysfunction. Anticoagulant activity is 3X stronger than vitamin E.
SUPPLEMENTS TO DISCONTINUE DURING THE PREOPERATIVE PERIOD
Ginseng (Panax ginseng /panax quinquefolium)- At least 3 different varieties; Asian, American, and Siberian, Improves physical and cognitive performance, mood, or metabolism. And hypoglycemic agents.
Hawthorne Cratagus laevigata)- The extract is used for its ability to potentiate the action of cardiac glycosides. Used in treatment of ischemic Heart disease, hypertension, angina, and chronic congestive Heart disease, potentiates the actions of digitalis and other cardiac glycosides.
Kava kava (piper methysticum)- Sedative, analgesic soporific, anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, anxiolytic, similar to the effects of benzodiazepines in treatment of anxiety. May potentiate CNS effects of barbiturates, alcohol, antidepressants, antipsychotics, and general anesthetics.
Licorice Root (Glycyrrchiza glabra)- Used for gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, and cough /bronchitis. Glycyrrhizin acid and licorice may cause high blood pressure hypokalemia, and edema.
Ma huang (Ephedra sinica)- Used in weight loss and energy products; a natural amphetamine with powerful stimulant effects. More than 800 adverse reactions reported with the FDA. Causes hypertension, tachycardia, cardiomyopathy, and cardiac dysrhythmias.
Melatonin- A hormone secreted by the pineal gland, Regulates many other hormones that are involved controlling circadian rhythm. Used for jet lag, insomnia, and SAD (seasonal affective disorder). May potentiate effects of barbiturates , which may potentiate existing anticoagulant medications.
Red Clover (Trifolium pratense)- Used to relieve menopausal symptoms. Active constituent include Coumadin derivates, which may potentiate existing anticoagulant medications.
St. John’s Worth (hypericum perforatum)- Herb used as mild antidepressant, sedative, anxiolytic. May have a monoamine oxidase (Moa) inhibitory effect. Can interact with Mao inhibitors and other antidepressant. Many other drug interactions reported.
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis)- Used as a sedative, hypnotic, and antispasmodic in the GI tract. Relieves anxiety, nervousness, and insomnia. May increase effects of sedative hypnotics.
Vitamin E- Important fat-soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant and prevents the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Used in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, cancer, age-related degenerative diseases. An clotting benefits can prolong bleeding time.
Yohimbe (Corynanthe yohimbe)- “Natural Viagra” that has MAO effects. Yohimbe is the agent extracted from the bark of the yohimbe tree. The tree grows in the African nation of Cameron, Gabon, and Zaire, have both psychological and physical effects. Increases the potency of anesthetics.
