I'm on my first day of Invisalign, and I already feel the aligner working. I took it out for lunch today and my teeth felt very strange, so yeah it is totally living up to expectations so far.
I'll have the aligners in for about ten months, so it is going to be a while. From the renderings I saw before the treatment, my teeth are going to look awesome. I'm really looking forward to liking my smile instead of absolutely hating it.
Some foreseen challenges:
- Brushing teeth after each meal -- I know I'll forget my toothbrush sometimes or I might not have enough time.
- Not being able to go out and have drinks (I might sneak the occasional vodka soda though...)

Sharp edges
PartytimeNovember 18, 2016
I take it this is a common occurrence, but my lower aligner has a really sharp edge that scrapes where my mouth flesh meets my gums. There is a sore red indent in a line on my mouth skin and it is pretty uncomfortable.
I am pretty sensitive to this type of thing though. I've never liked having my skin touched, to the point where getting a massage is pretty much unbearable. Sometimes my partner will absent-mindedly rub his thumb on my hand when we hold hands, and I have to pull my hand away compulsively.
I'm going to talk to the dentist about this and see if something can be done. I have no problems with my tongue and the interior edges of the aligners at all, strangely enough.

Have you tried filing the edges? I heard from other people that you can buy a nail file and smooth the edges.

Yeah, I tried to file the front edge a little bit but it was taking forever and made no difference at all. Today I'm not having such a huge problem with it, so I'm just going to wait and see whether the pain stops altogether.

Did it work? Yeah. Is it perfect? No.

Since I got invisalign, I have been both happy and annoyed by the results. My teeth look very straight, straighter than I could have envisioned, but the problem is not the appearance, but the feeling of misalignment that I now have.
About halfway through treatment, I noticed that without my aligners in, my bottom teeth in the front would touch the back of my top front teeth, preventing my back teeth from settling together properly. I also noticed that chewing was more difficult because my teeth didn't fully touch in the back. To address this, my dentist gave my aligners with a little "step" of plastic behind the top front teeth for my lower front teeth to sit on. This would ostensibly prevent the back teeth from being pushed into my gums, and thus, without the aligners in they would touch. This did work during the remainder of my treatment, and I felt satisfied.
Now that I am several years out of treatment and have only been wearing my retainer at night, which has no "step", my teeth continue to not touch in the back. I feel like my jaw has moved backward to accomodate the misalignment so now some of my teeth do touch, but my jawline looks significantly different. I think I look better overall, and I have had no cavities due to the spacing of my teeth being significantly better, but I am unsatisfied with this result. Having consulted with a new dentist, it would require much more to fix, so I am just living with it for now.
