After suffering with large breasts since I was a teen, I finally decided to get a consultation for breast reduction. I have terrible back and neck pain, have a hard time exercising comfortably, and I am frustrated with the struggles of not fitting into bras and bathing suits. I also struggle to find clothing that fits that does not accentuate the size of my breasts. I have always hated how they make me look and I spend way too much time and energy trying to minimize their appearance.
At my consultation I was told that I did not quite meet the requirements to have my surgery covered by healthcare (I was just shy of needing to reduce each side by 400 grams). I felt discouraged (but not really surprised) at this news and decided to take a few days to think about whether I could cover the cost. After talking things over with my boyfriend and my mom I decided to go ahead and book the surgery. Fortunately my surgeon had an opening 2.5 weeks after the consultation (which was unusual as it normally takes 2-3 months). I am already slightly nervous for the procedure which I think is partly because I wasn't expecting everything to move so quickly. From the time I booked my consultation to the time of my surgery will only be 4 months.

Mine was only 2 1/2 weeks! But I wanted to get it done ASAP, and I also wanted to get it in on the insurance I had because I knew I was going to be changing insurance companies since my husband got a new job.
Try not to worry too much about cup size, it's more important that your new breasts look right on your body. I had my surgery almost 6 weeks ago and I don't even know what cup size I am as the shape and size is shifting (almost daily!) as they heal. Right now I am not wearing any structured cup size bras anyway-just sport type bras.
I did buy a bathing suit shortly after surgery-I too had been wearing a sports bra for swimming, which, ironically, started to rip(on the outer layer) the next to last time I wore it before my surgery! Wearing a "real" swimsuit (without having to special order) is a luxury I hadn't had in years!
Anyway just make sure your surgeon knows you want to go "on the small side" and I'm sure you will be fine!

What size are you hoping to end up?

I want to be a small C!

Although I also want to keep my shoulders from hurting anymore, one of the other things I hate about having such large breasts (48H, but wearing 48G because H too hard to find) is that I am short and when I try to wear sleeveless tops in that size the arm holes are way too big and the sides of my bras show so I can't wear them. And I want to be able to wear them in the hot summer days to be cooler. I am hoping that after my reduction I will be able to wear a small enough size that the armholes will not be a problem anymore. Also, I have noticed that all of the prettier bras seem to come in smaller sizes. I can't wait to have this done, but it will be next year sometime because I am first having reconstruction on the other breast, and have chosen the DIEP Flap. Can't wait to have that done either! It will be so nice to have 2 breasts again! MY QUESTION:Is there a limit to how much smaller they can make them? I don't want to be too small, and am thinking about a D, which would be about 4 sizes smaller. Can they do that?

Hi Janlee! So exciting that you made the decision to get a reduction...it is life changing and I'm sure you will be able to wear smaller clothes and prettier bras afterwards:) i have heard that there IS a limit as to how small you can go because the surgeon needs to keep an adequate blood supply to your breasts and nipples. However I'm not the best person to answer your question since I'm no expert! Have you seen the "Q&A" part of this website? If you ask your question there you can get answers from plastic surgeons all over the world and that will give you a good idea of what is possible. Good luck!

Thanks Isabella87. I will try that.

Hi maddie. Thanks! I really liked my surgeon and I have had no complications. Dr. Bendor Samuel at the Landings clinic in Halifax Nova Scotia performed my surgey. Good luck to you :)

Shopping for Surgery Aftercare!

Isabelle87
Hi everyone,
My surgery has been booked for a few days now and the big day is 15 days away. I am excited and nervous all at once. Today I went shopping for sports bras and medical supplies so I will be all set when I get home from the clinic. I also bought myself a new pair of button up pajamas so I can be as comfortable as possible after surgery.
Shopping for post surgery bras was quite surreal! I tried on several different sports bras to feel out what might be comfortable but of course they didn't fit my size E chest and it was difficult to tell what sizes would be appropriate for the swollen C cups that I will have after surgery. I ended up purchasing three seamless sports bras all in size medium because they weren't too tight around the band yet they were supportive in the cup (even though they were way too small for my current size - see photo). Two of the bras I purchased zip up the front which should make things a little easier during the early stages of recovery. I will be so impressed and overjoyed if my new boobs fit into a size medium sports bra!

Button up pyjamas is something I haven't even thought of! Thank you for sharing such a brilliant idea

:) i got some really cute and comfy floral ones at Winners. I haven't let myself wear them yet - saving them for after surgery.

Hello! I'm wondering what brand the bras you bought are and where you got them from? I'm in Nova Scotia too and still waiting on my surgery date *ugh*
October 23, 2017
All my bras are from walmart! Except the black and white non zip up which I got at winners. The zip up walmart ones have been great especially for the first weeks when you cant really lift your arms. I also find the zip ups much more sanitary because you can easily slip them over your arms without really touching your body. With the non zip sports bras you have to pull them over your head or step into them so they end up touching a lot more of your body before getting to where they need to be. Most importantly, buy only seamless bras! Seams will be uncomfortable every time!

Hi saw that you were in Nova Scotia! You must be covered through health care? Do you know who your surgeon is? My new bras are from vie en rose at halifax shopping centre and I will post a photo tomorrow. My post surgery sports bras were mostly from walmart. I hope you get your date soon! Let me know!

Sports bras

Isabelle87
These are the three sports bras that I purchased yesterday. They are the type of bra that was recommended for me to buy - seamless, not too tight around the band but supportive in the cup. I'm glad I was able to easily find seamless zip up bras at Walmart. The Calvin Klein bra is from Winners. They were all quite inexpensive :). I got them all in size medium and they currently fit around the band but not at all in the "cup". As i mentioned in my previous review, I will be ecstatic if I fit into these bras comfortably after surgery (which at a C cup I think I should).

You will definitely want the zip ups at first. I was able to put a pull over one on after a few days, but at first you won't be wanting to raise your arms that much.
