Vera Clinic in Istanbul Refusing Refund After We Were Stranded in Dubai Due to War — What Can We Do?
My husband and I booked hair transplants with Vera Clinic in Istanbul. Our coordinator was very attentive throughout the whole process—explaining everything and helping us plan the procedure. We decided to go with their full package (including stem cell treatment), which was $5,990 per person.
We wired $1,000 each as a deposit about a month before the procedure and planned to bring the remaining balance in cash to pay on the day of surgery.
Since we were traveling all the way from the U.S., we decided to make a vacation out of it and spend a week in Dubai before heading to Istanbul. We had everything planned—flights, hotels, transfers, and surgery dates.
A week before the procedure, I got nervous about carrying that much cash internationally and asked if we could wire the remaining balance ahead of time. They said that was completely fine, so we wired the remaining $9,980 USD to Vera Clinic.
Then everything went sideways.
The day before we were scheduled to fly from Dubai to Istanbul, the U.S. and Israel bombed Iran, and the regional airspace started shutting down. Flights were cancelled and travel became extremely limited. We were supposed to arrive in Istanbul Sunday, have our consultation and stem cell treatment Monday, a rest day Tuesday, and surgery Wednesday.
Instead, we ended up stranded in Dubai for nearly a week because the airspace was closed and flights were barely operating. When we finally managed to get out the following Friday, we decided it was safest to return to the United States rather than continue traveling in the region.
Throughout this whole situation, we stayed in contact with our coordinator at Vera Clinic. They were fully aware of what was happening and that the situation was completely outside of our control.
I asked if they could refund our payment (or at least everything minus the deposits) since we couldn’t make it due to the conflict and we honestly don’t feel comfortable traveling back to the Middle East anytime soon.
Their response was that they do not offer refunds, but they will hold the money until we reschedule.
The problem is, we don’t know if or when we would ever want to go back and do this procedure.
At this point we would simply like our money refunded, but they won't even answer our WhatsApp messages anymore.
