Life-affirming and Restorative FUT for a Transgender Woman in Her 20's

I am officially two weeks post op from my FUT hair restoration with Dr. Christopher Varona of Varona Hair Restoration in beautiful Newport Beach, California.

Dr. Varona is beyond gifted. He possesses this uncanny ability to both put you at ease and place you in utter and complete confidence. He makes you feel self-assured and with each moment that passes, you grow in assurance that you are under the care of a true master and artist.

I had extensive hair loss since I was a late teen. Being in my late 20’s and a transgender woman, I was really tired and really exhausted by the constant dread of looking in the mirror and never seeing who I truly am. People often do not understand the feminizing and restorative aspects that come with hair, but when you don’t have any hair, it doesn’t matter if your face looks as though you were Venus and sculpted from marble, it’s still a pretty man and not a woman.

My hair restoration journey, therefore, is so much different than so many other people. I was not motivated by appearances’ sake solely but also led by the conviction of my heart and soul to be who I am, and I can thank no other than Dr. Varona and his partner, Eduardo Silva, for helping me get back on track in restoring my identity to its true and proper state.

The procedure began in the morning. Dr. Varona’s physician’s assistant, Ruby, welcomed me into the practice. I was taken to meet Vanessa and Raquel, two of Dr. Varona’s associates and technicians that I would spend most of the rest of the day with. Everything felt so class, and so relaxing. I’d been in the stages of recovering from two surgeries, facial feminization as well as vertical sleeve gastrectomy, and everyone on the team was so kind and courteous to me.

I was taken into the operating theatre after meeting Dr. Varona and Eduardo. They are two of the kindest souls I’ve ever yet met, and again, I cannot repeat how blessed I was to be in this position and how humbling it was to realize that the state of my life could possibly change in the following hours. When you don’t have hair, and you live your life outwardly as a woman, one relies so much on wigs, hair extensions, and all sorts of systems and ways of concealing the fact one has lost such a major part of their physical appearance, that it was time that drudgery was set behind me and I was ready to embrace my new future.

Dr. Varona began my creating a new feminine hairline for me. He is a true artist and took his time, and his entire team made sure that the hairline was not merely proper but also exceedingly complementary to my appearance. As I had a hairline/scalp advancement as part of my facial feminization surgery performed by Dr. Harrison H. Lee in Beverly Hills, California, two months prior, Dr. Varona created a hairline that was just a bit over it, but perfectly so.

He meticulously carved and created the strip of hair from the back of my head by which all the grafts would be harvested from. Everything was done in complete ease, as Ruby was so conscientious of making sure I was without pain and his team, particularly Vanessa and Eduardo, were all attentive in ensuring my comfort throughout this process.

From then, Dr. Varona’s team of technicians created the grafts that were to be transplanted. His amazing team, which consisted of Raquel, Vanessa, Rosie and Richard created 3,193 grafts, which Dr. Varona and the team would harvest and place in my scalp for the actual hair restoration.

After around noon and until 9pm, Dr. Varona and his team carefully and beautifully filled in the top of my head and created my new hairline with these 3,193 grafts. It was a true masterpiece and work of art to see myself at the end of the day with hair where once there was nothing and for so long, I thought that would all that would be for me: nothing. Therefore, it is so important for me to state how life-changing this procedure by Dr. Varona was for me and how affirming of my life and my identity this entire experience has been.

The littlest things were what made this all so magical. As soon as I walked into the operating theatre, Dr. Varona gave me his personal Netflix to watch whatever I’d wanted. Eduardo had spent so much time prior to my appointment getting to know me and my goals. During the procedure, Ruby went out of her way to share so much of her life and interact with me. Dr. Varona’s techs Vanessa, Raquel, Rosie and Richard all got to me know personally and I, them. It was in the sharing of stories, ideas, goals all interspersed with the clinical miracle of planting hair that I ceased being who I was and entered into this miraculous state of having hope again in seeing myself for who I truly am. I cannot thank this team enough for their hard work and all their efforts in making me so happy and so pleased with my results.

As I am now officially two weeks post-op, I can confidently say Dr. Varona has performed a most excellent job on a most harrowing and complex patient. I am beyond grateful to Eduardo and Dr. Varona for making my dream into my true reality.
