1 Year Hair Restoration Journey
This is the most honest and detailed review I can offer to anyone looking to have a hair transplant procedure done. The procedure is a big decision and is not cheap, so I want to help anyone that is on the fence or considering having a hair transplant.
I have been losing my hair for approximately 15 years. I began to wear more hats, grow my hair out longer so my comb over game could be strong, and even blow-dry my hair every morning to try to make it look fuller. However, I have been self-conscious about it for the better part of ten years. Every summer I would tell my wife, I just want to dive into a pool and when I come up out of the water, I don’t want to be thinking about my scalp showing or bushing my hair over with my fingers as soon as I pop my head out of the water. With a little push from my wife, I reluctantly searched the internet for the best hair restoration facilities I could find. I read reviews, looked for doctors that have been in the industry for a long time, read about their backgrounds, history, and awards they had received. After weeding out a few other places that I spoke with, I eventually landed on the Anderson Center for Hair as the best in the business anywhere even remotely close to me.
When I went in for the consultation, I was surprised with how nice the office was and how pleasant the people were. This is where I met Matt Longshore and Dr. Jeremy Wetzel. I had a list of questions that I wanted answered about the different procedures and wanted to KNOW it was going to work. Matt and Dr. Wetzel were very patient, answered all my questions and helped to put my mind at ease about the procedure. They were not pushy or trying to sell me on anything. They were there to inform me the best they could so I could make the appropriate decision for me. I was initially interested in the FUE process, because I mean, who wants part of their scalp cut out of their head! After discussing the details of the different procedures, I decided on the FUT process, where they do in fact remove a part of the back of your scalp to transplant the hair to the top of my scalp where I was balding. I chose this procedure because of my hair type, and because this procedure has the greatest rate of success, which is what I wanted. I felt very comfortable with them, so I scheduled my procedure.
The day of the procedure came, and again, I was pleasantly surprised with how nice the facility was and how friendly all the staff were. My procedure lasted around 6 hours if I remember correctly, but I was asleep for a good portion of it. The medications helped with that! They fed my lunch, kept me comfortable, Dr. Wetzel, the staff, and I joked back and forth throughout the day, and it went by smoothly, and as comfortably as it can sitting in a chair all day. I do not recall any pain during the actual process. They removed a few hundred more hairs than I paid for and transplanted them as well at no additional charge. I was incredibly happy with this.
The first few days after the process were the toughest. There was no real pain, which was surprising to me, but you need to sleep in an elevated position, which was not easy, and I experienced some swelling and bruising that just made me not want to go out in public. This was expected as explained by Matt and Dr. Wetzel. I also know my body and expected it to last a few days longer than anticipated. The swelling/bruising on my face lasted about 4 days.
There was truly little actual pain from the procedure and scar. The most difficult part of the recovery for me personally was the itching from the healing process. Imagine having an intense itch that you cannot scratch for nearly two weeks because you can pull the newly transplanted hair out before it has time to grow on its own. Also, you cannot take a full-on shower of several days, because of the water jets. I just wanted to stand under the shower jets and let the water “scratch” my itchy scalp, but I couldn’t. It took me personally about two weeks for all the scabbing to go away.
From here on out, it was off to the races for my scalp and the newly transplanted hair. One other keynote to mention is the preventative maintenance that is required to keep your precious remaining hair from falling out. The new hair is good to go, but if you don’t want to continue to watch your hair line recede and have to go back prematurely for another procedure, then LISTEN to what Dr. Wetzel and his team have to say. I take two different medications every day and wear a low light laser hat for 10 minutes each day to keep my remaining hair line from receding. IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DO THIS DAILY, THEN I DON’T THINK YOU ARE GOING TO BE HAPPY WITH YOUR RESULTS YEARS DOWN THE ROAD. It’s an ongoing process.
It has been approximately a year since my procedure and it’s hard to put into words the confidence and excitement I have every day when I look at myself in the mirror. The scar on the back of my scalp is nearly invisible and I get my hair cut with a 3 of the sides and back, which is pretty short. No one knows that the scar is even there. I don’t wear nearly as many hats, even though I enjoy them, and I am confident when I dive into and come out of a pool. My wife and friends are amazed about how full my hair is again. I can’t say enough positive things about Dr. Wetzel and his team and the amazing job they did to give me my hair confidence back. I would highly recommend Anderson Center for Hair to anyone that is looking to restore some of their lost hair and confidence!
