My Gynecomastia Experience

I had my gynecomastia surgery at XSculpt in Evanston about a month ago. The entire experience was very positive. I highly recommend going to Dr. Troung if you need to this surgery or just want some consultation.
Background
I started noticing that I had gynecomastia when I was in junior high. I was very conscious when I had to take my shirt off when changing clothes for gym class. I’ve always been skinny my entire life so not sure where I got this extra fat around my nipple area. Ever since, I’ve always wore baggy shirts. Even when I wear a t-shirt, I would I wear a wife-beater or white shirt underneath. Half of my closet is filled with button shirts that I don’t wear because they show my chest too much. I don’t even know how to swim since I have to take my shirt off. Needless to say, I was in my own prison. I always thought that I would be able to work it off by exercising and lifting weights, but nothing worked. When I turned 37 years old, I feel like it’s gotten really bad. The more I worked out, the more it seemed to get bigger. My upper pecs would get big and tone, but the area around the nipples and lower chest always looked flabby to me. It was time to do something about it.
Finding a doctor
There was countless amount of research that I’ve done online regarding everything gynecomastia. I realized there was nothing I can do to get rid of the breast tissue, except to surgically remove it. My research led me to Realself.com where people share their experiences with the surgery. That’s how I found Dr. Troung. He had a lot of positive reviews, many years of experience, and was local.
Consultation
The consultation was in their other office in downtown Chicago. Getting there wasn’t too bad and the parking was pretty easy. When I got there, I had to sign a few documents and then waited in one of the rooms. Dr. Troung arrived and he examined my chest. He told me exactly what he would do to remove the gynecomastia. I felt very comfortable with him. He was very knowledgeable and very professional. He was patient and answered all the questions that I had regarding the surgery.
Their prices were very competitive compared to all the places that I’ve seen online. Before I left the consultation, I set up my appointment with them to get the surgery done within the next few weeks. I knew I was going to be in good hands.
Surgery day
I arrived at the surgery office in Evanston in the morning on Thursday. I picked Thursday because I can get 4 days of resting before I go to work on Monday (took 2 days of PTO). Everyone I’ve met at the office was really friendly. I am not a morning person, but these guys made me feel very comfortable. My wife drove me there and waited about an hour or so. The waiting room had a tv and drinks so the wait seemed to have gone by fast for her.
I changed into the gown. They put in my IV. Talked with the anesthetist. Dr. Troung marked areas on my chest to help him with the surgery. They rolled me into the surgery room and then they put me under. I didn’t remember anything except for me being driven home by my wife.
Pain
When I got home, I wasn’t in too much pain since the anesthetics were still working. Apparently you’re supposed to be upright when you sleep. I set up my couch in the living room where the cushion was upright on my back against my head while sitting/laying. It wasn’t too bad. This was my sitting/sleeping position for the next 2-3 days. I didn’t want to move my arms too much, but they recommend that you move it as much as you can. In terms of meals, I was able to eat and drink as normal (no alcohol).
They say that the second day would be the most painful. For me, my chest felt a little uncomfortable, but it wasn’t too bad. I only took the over the counter Tylenol that they told me to take. Besides that, I didn’t take any of the harder medication for pain.
There were some bruising around my chest but the pain was very mild. As someone explained it, the sensation was the results of doing as many pushups as you could.
Besides that, there wasn’t too much pain for me. With that said everyone is different and will have different experiences.
Undergarment
The undergarment that they give me worked very well. This was something that we are supposed to wear for 1 month. It helps compress the chest so it reduces the swelling. I was originally concerned about the concealment of the garment until I tested it out with wearing a white undershirt over the garment. It hid the garment pretty well. I wear button dress shirts for work and I don’t think anyone at work was able to suspect anything. I even bought a compression shirt so I can swap out the garment so it can get a wash every other day or so.
Tubes
The one thing I like about Dr. Troung’s surgery was that they don’t use that tube that drains fluid into a bottle. I don’t know how I’d be able to go to work with the tube/bottle hanging from me. Dr. Troung said that the body naturally absorbs the fluid so it’s not necessary for the tube/bottle. That would have been a deal breaker for me if I had to use one of these.
Week 1
After my first post-surgery visit at week 1, everything looked perfect. I couldn’t ask for anything better. There were some bruising still, but it went away around week 3. My chest looked better after each week. I got the green light to workout (lightly) after week 1, but I decided to wait till week 2-3. After a week of lightly working out, I progressed slowly the first few days. Then a week after that, I was about at 80%. I was at about 90% at week 4.
Overall
At the end of the day, I had a very positive experience. I wished I found Dr. Troung and gotten this surgery done earlier. If cost is your concern, I will guarantee you that Dr. Troung’s prices are very competitive. If you are hesitant about the surgery, don’t be. It’s not as bad as it seems. Getting the surgery done was the best thing for me. I gained confidence and can now wear all the shirts that I have in my closet. I am now a free man!
