Pic of the separation

This was taken the day after I returned to the U.S. and the incision opened. It looks a little better now.
There is some blood which the surgeon says is a good thing because that means new tissue is forming. Still, it will be months before it closes. He said wounds like this heal 15% a week.

Wow, I'm sorry to see that, but I'm glad you are healing ... however slow or fast.

Thanks! I can't wait for it all to be over. :) Hopefully 5 more weeks!

Over all they look good. Hope u have a fast recovery. I will be having thigh lift soon. Before you had the separation. Was your lift tolerable or u say its painful as a tummy tuck? Any suggestions u can give me?

Thank you for your kind words. I actually didn't have any pain at all. The only pain I had was soreness from the belly lipo and even that was only when touched. When is your surgery? I wish you much success!

Sorry, I can't look at your incision. I am glad you feel up to letting us know how you are doing. I think about how your are often and am happy when I see you have written. I did not want to talk to anyone after my last surgery and It was not a good thing.
Happy healing.

It's pretty gross for sure. My aunt said she nearly fainted when she saw the pic!
September 7, 2015
Hahha! Tell your Aunt I feel the same way. I try to close my eyes when I open your page until I scroll down. The important thing is that your healing and feeling in good spirits. I am glad you have people around you.

Glad you are doing better. Ask your doctor about a wet-to-dry dressing change. It is done by cleansing the wound with saline or wound wash then applying a moistened normal saline sterile 2X2 or 4X4 gauze followed by a dry gauze. This will speed up the healing process. Your wound looks clean and healthy. The tissue is very pink which means there is good blood flow/circulation to the site. All the best to you. This too shall pass. Keep positive and eat a healthy diet rich in protein, zinc, and vit C.

Thank you for your kind words. I have been using silver sulfazadine and it seems to be working. The protein is hard since I am a vegetarian, so I am forcing myself to eat fish. Hard work for sure!

Dear WorkoutBeast, I too had an incision separate on my belly after an open hysterectomy.
First, don't beat yourself up because this too shall pass; you're going to look and feel amazing very soon:)
My separation looked just like yours; the red and yellow areas are normal tissue and collagen reformation.
After my incision split in the hospital, a wound nurse came and taught my son how to pack and dress my wound at home every 3 days or so. The nurse gave me some dressings with silver compound in them, as silver has antibacterial properties. My son cut a piece of silver sponge the size of my wound, gently packed it into the wound, and covered with a waterproof bandage... Super simple!
The brand names of the silver dressing are Aquacel Ag, or Mepilex Ag.
It took about 3 months for my incision to completely heal... It got smaller and shallower each week. The scar I have is no big deal; it is just a tad bit wider than the rest of my hysterectomy. The way my separation healed isn't NEARLY as wide or long as my wound was!! So when yours heals it will just be a little bigger than the rest of your scar on your thigh!
Hang in there sweetie... By the holidays you're gonna look and feel amazing. Can you walk for exercise right now?

I am sorry to hear about your issues after the hysterectomy. I am glad you area better now :) Thank you for your kind words. I am missing exercise for sure I had a little issue with a clot in my leg, but now that is taken care of, I am hoping to start walking more very soon. I am also using the silver compound and it seems to be doing well. I may do scar revision when it heals. We shall see. I'm not really up for more cutting. Ugh!

Major Wound Separation (Ugh!!)

Sorry I have been MIA since returning from Mexico, but I have been a bit (well, more than a bit) bummed out.
The vertical incision on my left thigh ruptured and it's too wide to be restitched. I'm not sure what I did to cause it to split, but it did. Now, I am seeing a plastic surgeon at home for wound care. He says it will take up to three months to heal, then I will have to decide if I want a scar revision.
I return to Mexico in a couple of weeks to see my surgeon there and have the other stitches removed. I have one other spot that is coming undone. I am going to try Steri-Strips to keep it together.
I am unhappy right now but do like the fact that my thighs no longer bulge several inches out to the front. I can't exercise until the open wound heals, and I have to say that is pretty scary for me. I worked hard to lose weight and fat and really don't want to gain any of it back.
I am eating foods that promote wound healing in an effort to make it heal faster.
I'll keep you all posted :)
Thank you for all your kind and positive thoughts! They have been super appreciated :)

I'm so sorry about the wound separation. I'm glad you still see the positive in your surgery and I'm also glad that you also have a PS in US. Rest and heal.. Your body is burning tons of calories healing, probably more than it would exercising. Luv and hugs..

Sorry to hear about your problems with sutures. You are a brave soul and I wish you a safe and productive trip back to Mexico. Take care.

I am trying not to worry about it. I am usually so active, so not being that way kind of drives me nuts lol

I do understand. I was at the gym 6 days a week for over 12 years it was what I did. I ripped my shoulder and it took me 2 years to convince a dr. to give me an MRI instead of pain meds. They did the operation. I took some time off to rehab then I was training up to 14 hours a week for a 500k ride and I knew something was still wrong (but he dr. said there wasn't) (so I went and paid for my own MRI) and the shoulder was a mess, new surgeon fixed and and said I would be lucky if I could lift my arm again. I wanted to get to the gym again and train but I thought being able to move my arm was more important than working out. Two surgeries in 2 years I made me rethink what drove me nuts. Sorry for the rant, I wanted you to know I really understand how you feel.

My drains are out but I had to have some more sutures put in place in a different area. Sigh! The plane ride home is going to be interesting for sure :(

Hope you're doing better. By getting in and out of bed will put strain on your sutures. Would be better if u have a recliner to sit n sleep in. Easy to get in n out of a lift recliner even better. I used after my tummy tuck. Helped me alot no strain.

Sleeping in the recliner was definitely easier. I popped an incision pretty badly after returning home. This has been a challenge for sure!
