Cleared for Surgery by Cardiology and Nutrition!
I haven't updated in a while because there wasn't much to report. I'm noticing that after the initial 10 pounds came off, I've been a SLOW loser. Like, a pound every 2 weeks. My GP told me weight loss is going to be slower for me than some because of my thyroid condition. I'm trying to be patient with myself and just enjoy the ride lol.
I was cleared by Nutrition and Cardiology for surgery this month, which is exciting! I'm just waiting on Behavioral Health to clear me. I've already gone to 2 of the 3 required appointments but they flagged me for my autism diagnosis and are following up with my regular therapist about that. I'm disappointed because I feel like the Dr who screened me isn't looking at how high functioning I am, my personality, or the fact that I have therapy weekly to address my diagnosis. It's like she saw "Autism Spectrum Disorder" on my records and instantly judged based off of that alone. My therapist is in full support of me getting surgery so I don't think it's going to keep me from getting cleared. I think I'm just annoyed by the principle of it lol.
I was offered the opportunity to schedule my pre-surgery appointment before Behavioral Health clears me so I think I'm going to do it. It's definitely scary because I was told at the beginning of the program that I needed to be prepared for surgery before calling to schedule the pre-surgery appointment since they schedule surgery within 2 weeks afterwards. I don't know if that's going to be the case for me since I still need clearance from Behavioral Health but I'm trying to mentally prepare myself anyway.

Initial Nutrition Appointment
So I went to my first Bariatric nutrition class yesterday! It was a lot of the same info we received at the seminar on the 19th, but she did give me a specific weight loss goal catered to my situation. I have 9 pounds to lose from my initial weigh in to my surgery.
After weighing in at the end of the class, I found out I only have 1 more pound to lose! Of course, I still have to show that I'm meeting the nutritional goals she sets for me, but I'm proud of myself for losing a bit of weight!
I've also started taking measures to ensure I'm comfortable with my body through this weight loss journey. There are a lot of people who get down to a healthy bmi and still see a fat person in the mirror. In my case, I often used my weight as a way to deflect sexual attention due to previous trauma. I don't want either scenario to be a reality for me after surgery so I'm getting weekly therapy and am starting to wear less layers. Last week, I wore a knee length dress without tights. Yesterday, I wore a crop top. Both were terrifying but doing this is vital in getting me to a place of self love.
I've included a pic of my nutrition class outfit (pardon the dirty mirror) and will update again after Wednesday's group walk!

Hi! I've been lurking around the site for a while...
Hi! I've been lurking around the site for a while and the journeys shared here really helped finalize my decision on getting weight loss surgery. I want to share my own experience now that I'm officially enrolled in Tripler Army Medical Center's bariatric program.
Here's a little about myself:
I'm 24 years old, a licensed hair stylist, mother, aspie, and army wife. Some medical issues I've been dealing with are hypothyroidism, POTS Syndrome, high cholesterol, and knee pain. I'm hoping to see some improvement in my symptoms as I lose weight.
I started Tripler's bariatric program on 1/19/18. The morning consisted of starting my paperwork, an info session with one of the surgeons, and my first official weigh in. I'm trying to get everything done as soon as possible because we are pcsing in August and my support system is here on island. I feel like I'm in a good place to do this right now because I have my husband's support and weekly behavioral health appointments to get me through the first few months post-surgery. Most of my personal journey to a healthy weight is going to be about mental-wellness.
So, I guess I should mention my stats? I'm pretty self conscious about disclosing my weight, but I see a trend of people sharing weekly losses lol.

I've been diligent about logging my food since the 19th and it's helped lot! It's amazing how much more we pay attention to what we eat when those calories start to add up. I have a nutrition appointment on the 31st so I hope she can help me develop a balanced diet while I lose my pre-surgery weight (about 20 pounds). I also have my 1 on 1 surgery consultation on Feb 15th and I'm so excited! I'll try to update weekly, and share pics at least monthly. I'd love to hear from people on what surgery they're getting as well since they're letting me pick. Right now, I'm leaning towards the rny but I'm keeping an open mind about the vsg as well!
